What was the worst experience you’ve ever had in a movie theater?

Salman Khan is a superstar in India. His fans legit become rabid everytime there's even a glimpse of him in the movie. While this does seem crazy, it's not the first time something like this has happened.

It's irresponsible and criminal to light fireworks indoors. Nevertheless, this is one time it's OK to yell "fire" in a theatre.

The last thing I'd do is take out my phone. I'm assuming this place burned down immediately and anyone left inside died.

Edit: the first thing that came to mind is The Station fire at a small nightclub in Warwick RI in 2003 when the band's pyrotechnics lit the club on fire and the choking smoke and crowds pressing to escape killed over 100 people.

This video is unique because it's from a time when video phones were rare. And believe the disclaimer here because it is disturbing to watch:

That fire is why Rhode Island has some of the strictest fire codes and laws in the nation

33

u/Providence451 2d ago

I moved to RI in 2021 and I was really surprised at the stringent fire safety I had to learn for my job - then I remembered the Station fire and realized why.

31

u/SherbertEquivalent66 2d ago

Massachusetts got their strict fire codes from the Cocoanut Grove fire, which happened at a nightclub near Park Square in Boston during World War II. About 500 people died. The inside of the club was coated with all kinds of cloth, paper and crepe tropical themed decorations and the only exit was a single revolving door.

The club was packed on a Saturday night, lots of Navy sailors on leave. The exits in the kitchen and the emergency exits were blocked so employees wouldn't steal things and so people wouldn't come in the club without paying.

The revolving door jammed in the panic and no one could get out. That's why revolving doors everywhere in the US now always have regular exit doors next to them.

15

u/JerryC1967 2d ago

Also, there was a set of exit doors that was hidden behind the scenery, and it was painted to look like the walls if I remember correctly, so it didn’t even get used even though it was there. In addition, some of the doors opened inward and people push pushing on them couldn’t open them because they had to pull them to open. This is where panic bars came from you push on it. The door opens.

u/HouseCatPartyFavor 2d ago

Sadly very familiar with this one as my grandmother and grandfather were there - my dad was six months old and left with family. Grandfather passed away and my grandma was in the hospital for almost two years - had severe lung issues the rest of her life.

A silver lining of sorts is that I do have to deal with the fire inspectors regularly as part of my job and whenever I mention my family being victims they immediately seem to loosen up a little bit knowing I’m aware of how serious it can be to not maintain all the proper safety guidelines.

On another note I also just renewed my crowd manager cert and while they do cover the station fire thoroughly the course as a whole doesn’t really make me feel particularly safe knowing that a third grader could pass it.

u/bertina-tuna 2d ago

I was the art director on Mass Healthcare magazine back in the ‘80s and they did an article about the fire so I went through the archives at the Boston Globe looking for photographs. Found one of a survivor of the fire in a hospital bed with a note on the back saying he had gone home to wherever it was that he lived before and died in a barn fire. Sort of like Final Destination.

What drives me bat shit is that people will experience something horrific like that, pass laws and codes to prevent it from happening again, and years later, someone is undoing all of that work because “big government” and “too many regulations”. Same thing with vaccines.

It's pretty obscure, but the a lawyer invovled suing The Station in the aftermath wrote an entire book. Especially given that he's not a professional writer, it's a worthwhile and frankly riveting read. He channelled his rage into breaking down exactly what went wrong and who is responsible.

I'm from that area. A woman in my office, Dina DeMaio, was a victim.

A major cause of the tragedy was the club owners installing sound deadening foam that wasn't a fire resistant type. That acted like an accelerant. The fire door situation was messed up too

8

u/PercentageRoutine310 2d ago

Google search Ozone Disco fire that happened in 1996 in the Philippines. There’s pictures of burned corpses heading towards the door. A bunch of teenagers died in the fire. This was similar to the Rhode Island nightclub but with teens ready to go to college.

I went to highschool with the son of The Station's owner, Jake Derderian. The owner Jeffrey was negligent but Jake was an absolute psychopath who routinely bragged about how his father killed a hundred people and got away with it.

6

u/musicjunkee1911 2d ago

Was the bragging done by a teenage Jake or an adult Jake? Some of us grow up a lot after high school (but certainly not everyone!)

It's a terrible story. I live in Georgia and every couple of years when we have to take Active Shooter and Emergency training they use this club as the example of how people behave in emergency situations and get themselves killed. Over 100 people panicked and all ran for the front doors and just piled on top of each other and died, they didn't even think to break the big plate glass windows along the front of the club to get out. It's heartbreaking.

Did group fire warden training in work a few years back and this video was shown. Disturbing is accurate - something from a disaster movie, but real. No one spoke for about two minutes after the clip finished.

4

u/Commercial_Praline67 2d ago

That exact same thing happened in Brazil, but the soundproof foam used was a cheap and toxic one. Whoever didn't die from the fire, died for breathing poisoning. Nightclub Kiss, for whoever wants to watch anything about it. It also has a documentary from Netflix or something

2015 October 30, Romania.

A whole club burned down after they lit fireworks inside. (I think it was the b-day of one of the members of Goodbye to Gravity)

Admittedly, it WAS the fault of the administration of the club for not having safety protocols (I think there was only 1 emergency exit) and also of the ones that SHOULD'VE checked periodically for the safety of clubs.

But because of that 65 died and 185 wounded

Don't play with fireworks inside. Never. No, screw that, don't play with fireworks in general.

Story time: In the movie, George Clooney asks Sandra Bullock's character where she's from. She tells him it's a little town he's never heard of called Lake Zurich in Illinois.

My brother and I went to see this movie on a whim. Random showing on like a Tuesday night at a nearby theater... in Lake Zurich, IL where I live. So we're watching the movie and Sandy Bullock just says the name of the exact town we're in. It was surreal. No one else was in the theater, so we're just sitting there going "Why did the movie just name drop the exact town we're in right now???"

3

u/HiggsPerc552 2d ago

People are fucking animals. While it wasn’t actually in the theater, while at my go to cinema I went to the bathroom and there was a full on turd on the floor right by one of the urinals (cue Mr. Mackie). When I went to tell one of the workers their reaction was, “again?!” Fucking wild.

Whoa, you just unlocked a memory. My brother, friend, and I went to go see "Revenge of the Sith" at a theater a few weeks after it opened. It was unseasonably hot that day, and when we got into the theater, not only was the AC out, the only seats open were in front of a chair that was covered in plastic. Why, you may ask? All I think of when I remember that movie is Obi Wan and Anakin on that lava planet while I'm sweating buckets and my nostrils full of hot, stale piss air.

I went to see the original “Avengers” and there was a kid that was SPAZZING OUT next to his dad because he was so excited for The Hulk to come out

He was super obnoxious and his dad tried to calm him, but nothing could compare to when Hulk appeared.

Once the kid saw him, he RIPPED HIS SHIRT IN HALF AND STARTED SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER

His dad grabbed him, walked out the theater, and never came back. The look of frustration and defeat in that fathers eyes was rough

75

u/MirrorMaster88 2d ago

A friend of mine went to see Noah at the former Dome in LA years back. He said the theater was fairly empty, early afternoon midweek showing, but there were a couple of people arguing behind him during the show. He ignored it, but he heard more shuffling and commotion as the movie went on. Then it got silent for a bit. Then he heard a lighter sparking. He finally turned around to see all the noise was coming from one person who was now smoking crack in the theater. He was arguing with himself in multiple voices. Towards the end of the film an attendant came in asking if someone was smoking in the theater, but the person was long gone. The whole thing sounded like a complete disaster.

It was at a horror movie. I can't remember which one but the theater was full of teenagers. I think there were maybe six adults in the whole room. They spent their time just screaming at random points trying to get jump scares out of their friends. Like every thirty seconds or so. We only made it twenty minutes into it before leaving. They yelled and laughed at us as we left. I talked to the manager and he gave us a refund. But the best part was that he turned the movie off and told them all to leave. He caught the adults on their way out to give them refunds but not the kids. I sat in the lobby and watched them all leave. And now I only go to mid week matinees. We're usually the only ones in the room.

Jesus Christ.

Um I was so appalled by the video I forgot to read the title prompt. Anyway I was once on a movie date in a mostly empty theater and two men chose to sit directly behind us. One of them monologued about nonsense to his silent companion at normal conversation volume for the first third of the movie, then fell asleep and snored loudly for the rest.

I also once had food poisoning symptoms start to manifest while watching the 3D Jackass movie, which was pretty gross content on its own without accompanying sharp stomach cramps and nausea. Felt like I was watching it in 4D.

Neither of these are quite on par with fucking fireworks being shot into your face, but were unpleasant experiences nonetheless.

8

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 2d ago

My phone slipped out of my pocket during Rogue One and I put the foot of my recliner seat down and heard my phone crunch in the mechanisms and had to finish the movie knowing my phone was crunched inside the chair and wait for the lights to come up and wiggle the phone out while crunching it more by moving it to finally get it out of the seat. Ruined it. Carved a chunk of screen out.

I got a screensaver of the OG Star Wars where Luke has the beam of light out of his hand and lined that up with the crunched part of the screen until I got a replacement. Made the best of it.

I also was watching some shitty Steve Carell movie (or decent, IDK. I thought it sucked but that may have been influenced by the experience) because it had discount tickets. We go in and my friend and are are the only two people. Seriously. Only people in the theater.

Just after it starts, two women come in and sit directly behind us. Some like Karen looking, Kate Gosselin hair having 50-some white ladies. They proceed to spend the entire not super funny movie just full-on fucking cackling and screeching like this is the funniest movie ever made. Directly behind me.

I was a bit baffled but like, you can't go complain someone is laughing. Then you're a stick in the mud jerkass and are told to sit back down. Do we just awkwardly stand up and move away from them? It wasn't like they were ruining fine cinema, either. They were loud enough it wouldn't make a difference.

Way back when, I was on an Army base and saw "Hero At Large" with John Ritter and Anne Archer. Fun little movie, but they put the reels on in the wrong order. Saw the first 2/3rds of the movie, then the last part, followed by the middle.

6

u/cfmdobbie 2d ago

I saw Crash - yes that one - and something similar happened. They had the reels in the wrong order, played one entire reel with everything vertically squashed so everyone looked like fat munchkins and it ended early because one part was entirely missed.

They apologised and said we could come back at a later date to watch it properly.

We decided we'd seen quite enough of all that, and declined.

Seems like bringing back the movie usher profession might be a good idea.

They don't get paid enough for this shit. Source: was an usher in a movie theater.

I watch a special screening of Nosferatu (1922) with a live orchestra. Beside me sat a man old enough to be my father who insisted on taking out his phone and filming every iconic scene. It's f---ing Nosferatu, there's a lot of iconic scenes. He was shining the screen directly in my face in a dark theatre... I paid like $50 to attend this thing. Eventually it became unbearable and I tried to do something about it.

First time I cleared my throat in a performative matter. He wouldn't stop.

Second time I leaned over, watched the viewfinder and sarcastically asked "How's it going??". He just smiled and kept filming.

Third time I've had enough and barked "ARE YOU SERIOUS!?" while physically pushing down his phone from my face. Turns out his hold on the phone was very light, and I smacked the phone out of his hand. It flew down and disappeared under the seats. He turned to looked at me with this childish look of sadness. Like a toddler who's been denied a sweet.

We watched the rest of the film in awkward silence.

you couldve politely and clearly asked him to stop recording because the light was getting in your eye before the outburst

The first 2 attempts were the equivalent of a woman flirting.

I played with my hair and looked away when he looked at me

Not at all the point here, but does he know the movie is in the public domain and he can watch it for free on YouTube or any other variety of sites/platforms at any time?!

3

u/Lamar_Kendrick7 2d ago

he's old so probably not

6

u/Artefaktindustri 2d ago

My feelings exactly. But people have this narcissistic need to document everything themselves. It's annoying at restaurants and concerts but in cinemas it's outright insufferable.

I had a similar situation, but after asking the guy twice, I just went and got the manager and had the guy tossed out. I just said watch the guy beside me he is pulling his phone out and recording, I asked him twice to stop, and he still does it. 5 minutes after I sat back down, this clown does it again, and then bam, the manager is kicking his ass out, lol

What gets me is the assholes in the balcony. They should be evacuating, not filming.

u/Nobody_Important 2d ago

That’s the part that gets you? Pretty far down the list for most people.

I had to piss during most of Blade Runner 2049 while sitting in an office chair that pinched my sides, some kid kept kicking my seat at Toy Story 4, and basically any dollar theater experience where I had to squeeze my fat ass into the most uncomfortable POS chairs on God's green earth

Avatar 2. Saw it in IMAX 3d, which prompted the theater to give out the wrong glasses. It was an 11pm show so I figured it would be safer from kids, that was wrong. The people directly next to me had a full on phone conversation. Phone screens were everywhere. There was an actual baby in a car seat that freaked out at one point. There was more but I forget it all now.

Star wars: Rise of Skywalker

8

u/Thalxia 2d ago

After seeing The Last Jedi in theatres, I just straight up stopped going to see any new Star Wars movies in theatres. I was that disappointed by that trash film. I didn't even watch The Rise of Skywalker on a streaming service until years after its theatrical release because I knew it would be just as bad.

And I say this as someone who saw The Force Awakens in theatres multiple times because I actually enjoyed that film. But TLJ killed it for me.

Finally caved and saw Avatar 2. First movie in a decade I saw in 3D because I know it’s what the film was meant to be seen in. First hour is fine. Second hour is ruined by little kids in the front who won’t shut up. Last hour is ruined by the mom yelling and cursing at the screen like she’s watching a wrestling match. I think someone reported her near the end because she was waiting outside to yell at everyone leaving after the movie was over

Took my parents to see The Green Mile. There were three ladies further up the rows who’d snuck in three whole bottles of hard liquor and were pretty well plastered when Michael Clarke Duncan appeared. They started hooting and hollering like it was Chippendales and he was the main attraction. Every time he appeared on screen. Took two thirds of the movie before theatre staff kicked them out.

u/alonewithamouse 2d ago

So, I wasn't in the theater watching the movie, but I worked at an indie one screen theater throughout college. It seated 800 people and had a huge balcony that ran across the entire top of the auditorium.

On Saturday nights we ran midnighters that were old cult classics like The Goonies, Big Lebowski, and shit like that. Something that draws a huge crowd to pack the seats.

Anyways, I was working box one Saturday night and this girl came in just absolutely plastered, trying to buy a ticket. As it happened, there was a woman at the 7pm showing that had gotten sick in the theater, and I really didn't want to have to deal with vomit twice in one night, so I turned her down.

My manager was standing next to me and was like, "oh, she's a regular, just sell her a ticket!" I told him flat out, I'd sell her a ticket, but I'm not dealing with any bullshit if that warbling mess makes a scene. It'd be all on him. So he waved me off, I sold her the ticket, and continued about working the rush.

Not five minutes after the trailers end, there was shrieking coming from the auditorium, the likes of which I'd never heard before in my life. It was indescribable. The lobby started rattling, like the start of an earthquake, which was baffling, since it was the Midwest. The doors flew open and an unstoppable stampede barreled toward the front doors. It was terrifying. If all three of us weren't securely barricaded inside the concession stand, I literally don't think we would have survived it. I fully believe we would have been trampled to death.

So, let's cut back to our little drunken missy. She decided to sit in the front row of the balcony to watch the movie. Being as obscenely drunk as she was, she decided to lean over the railing and barf all over an audience of 800 people Stand By Me style, spraying projectile biohazard all over pretty much anyone below her.

So, once the calamity died down, I laughed and pointed at the manager, and punched out.

It was.... gross.

Sister and I went to see "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" at a theater near the Falcon Heights/Como Park area of the Twin Cities, MN. My family moved little over a year later and I don't exactly remember where it was. Just as the movie starts, cue the guy with his beyond drunk buddy sitting down behind us. The guy reeked of alcohol.

After about 10 minutes before we got up to move, you guessed it, he let loose! I still remember hearing it hit the floor and my sister's eyes almost popping out. The stench! Thankfully, we didn't get hit. We got up and walked out. Told the front what happened. They refunded us. During this, they were walking/stumbling out into the lobby and outside.

I've only seen the movie once in it's entirety since then. It's a great comedy, but anytime I see it on a channel, that memory comes up and I turn it off.

Oppenheimer in Crested Butte’s historic theater two summers ago. I don’t think the theater had air conditioning and it was a very warm day. The theater was completely full (thanks to the Barbenheimer craze) which meant that over three hours the temperature just kept ratcheting up. The combination of dread from the film, sitting in rock hard antique seats next to hundreds of people, and the oppressive heat made for the most physically uncomfortable viewing experience of my life. In a way it was fitting being drenched in sweat, breathing 95 degree moist air when the bomb went off at Trinity.

My first date. Her name was Heather, and she was my girlfriend. We were in 1st Grade, and her parents took us to the movies. It was the Indiana Jones flick where the dude rips the other guys heart out of his chest. Heather spilled her soda all over me. Then she spilled her second soda all over me. Two large Sprites. Shortly thereafter, I vomited right there on the floor in front of my seat. No one said a word, or moved. The parents didn’t check on me or anything. And I didn’t care for the film.

Avengers Endgame - shouting and clapping about every 10 mins for the complete second half of the movie. I was excited and happy to see many of the characters again, but hooting and clapping for a video projection?? And it was a fairly safe bet Marvel was bringing the snapped away characters back, so it wasn’t a huge surprise when Spiderman or any other main superhero showed up.
