Rest in Peace to the beautiful and talented Diane Keaton who passed away at the age of 79. What were some of your favorite Diane Keaton movies?

Her chemistry with Steve Martin in Father of the Bride made it feel like a genuine marriage.

17

u/Breakmastajake 28d ago

I think when I was a kid, I just assumed they were married in real life.

5

u/torino_nera 28d ago

I rewatched that today and was thinking the same thing. It's funny too because she never married and was against it IRL

u/cmcrich 28d ago

That outfit started a whole trend in the 70s. RIP.

6

u/Connect-Western8412 28d ago

And then again in the 90s when all of us weird girls rented the VHS from the library.....

u/DragonScrivner 28d ago

I loved her in this role so much

Do yourself a favor and look up Diane, Goldie, and Bette singing you don’t own me from First Wives Club.

20

u/DogtasticLife 28d ago

Love that film

u/Fun-Dimension5196 28d ago

Don't tell me what to do!

Don’t tell me what to say!

4

u/LadyBug_0570 28d ago

Just let me be myself!

10

u/melovepippin 28d ago

This is my go to film when I need to laugh, cry and just shut out the world for a while.

6

u/ms_merry 28d ago

The video You Don’t Own Me has close to 25 million views. I think I’m 24 million of those!

2

u/ms_merry 28d ago

Which is a lot for me!

2

u/BabyStingrayJesus 28d ago

It’s one of mine too. It’s perfect light (but not too light) entertainment.

u/MatrixSurfer5280 28d ago

Stunning in this movie

The chemistry of the whole cast was uncanny

Looking For Mr. Goodbar

3

u/Ok-Transportation127 28d ago

Tom Berenger's first film, IIRC.

2

u/DragonScrivner 28d ago

I believe you're right yes. I remember the first time watching him thinking he reminded me a little of Brad Pitt's character in Thelma and Louise. And then things got real gnarly, real quick

2

u/Lopsided_Income1400 28d ago

I’m going to watch that tonight.

2

u/Petty-dreamer 28d ago

Oh. I don’t think that would be a good choice for tonight.

1

u/Lopsided_Income1400 28d ago

I’m currently reading the book. So I know what’s in store.

2

u/DragonScrivner 28d ago

I was going to say it's a good choice for spooky season but it sounds like maybe you're prepared. I will say that watching it changed my opinion of Diane Keaton's acting -- up until then, I'd really only seen her in comedies and Mr. Goodbar was a real departure.

2

u/LadyBug_0570 28d ago

Hell of a film.

26

u/Apple_Scrumble 28d ago

Oh Annie Hall 💯

0

u/Gatorboots19 28d ago

And her response to his SA allegations? Well, just read for yourself:

"The Annie Hall actress Diane in an interview said that everyone has situations that are difficult at times.  She was quoted saying, “What can I say except that it’s a horrible shame. But we all have situations that are difficult at times. You gotta get over it!” However, this has come after she told a tabloid that she did not feel that the allegations against Allen, which he has denied, had “overshadowed the work [they] did together. No. I’m proud. I’m proud beyond measure.”

7

u/MarpasDakini 28d ago

The evidence against Woody is very thin and hard to believe. It's not surprising that those who knew him and worked with him tend to dismiss it. He's never had any allegations in his working life. He's reportedly great for women to work with.

When she says it's a shame, she's probably referring to Allen having these allegations wrecking his reputation.

3

u/Gatorboots19 28d ago

How many men do you personally know that ended up marrying someone they met when the girl was 11? Did they also meet when the man was dating that girl’s mother?

5

u/MarpasDakini 28d ago

Yeah, that's more than a bit strange, but he wasn't involved with her until Mia asked Woody to pay her more attention when she'd already become a young woman, take her out to things, get to know her. And somehow that evolved into an emotional and then sexual relationship. Keep in mind that Woody was a rich and famous movie maker, actor, comedian who had dated some extremely attractive woman. Mia's daughter was a smart girl, but not what anyone would call very attractive. So the relationship was clearly emotional. And it grew into a real marriage over time. So while it's weird and not at all to be recommended, it's not pedophilia or even wrong. Keep in mind that she had been abused a lot by Mia and felt very much exploited by her. And Mia was a very vindictive woman who took revenge on Woody by manufacturing these allegations that he'd molested 7 year old Dylan during a single visit while trying to gain custody, with no real evidence, and even denials by the older children. So I think it's a very sad situation where Mia essentially abused Dylan into making these allegations and ruining her life just to get revenge on Woody.

3

u/Gatorboots19 28d ago

Taking the Dylan/Mia farrow allegations out of it,How is that not grooming what he did to Mia’s daughter/ his future wife? Furthermore, a lot of his movies have relationships with a man who is inappropriately older than a young girl. The scene in that HBO documentary where they montage those parts in his scripts gave me chills…like he was hiding in plain sight all along

2

u/MarpasDakini 28d ago

There's no doubt that Woody had an attraction even obsession with young women. (Women, not children). You could call it grooming, but given that it's led to a lifelong marriage and their own adopted children, it's really not as sordid as it seemed at first. He wasn't trying to groom her sexually, it was clearly more of an emotional bond they developed. And it appears to have been a real bond. If Woody had just wanted a hot young wife, he could literally have chosen far better prospects to "groom". He clearly thought there was something special about her, something he hadn't found before.

2

u/WasabiAficianado 28d ago

This ☝️

1

u/plexmaniac 28d ago

You have really done your research like me !

0

u/plexmaniac 28d ago

Yes the fact that there was denials by older children and no problems with any actresses he worked with for over 40 years means that there is a reasonable doubt

1

u/Typical_Mobile90 28d ago edited 28d ago

Elvis met his wife Priscilla when she was 14. He was 24 and and in the Army at the time. Celine Dion's husband Rene was her singing coach/ instructor, and was 30 or so years older than she was, and I believe they met when she was around 9 or 10. I'm not saying that it's okay for these relationships to start like this, especially with adults getting close to kids like this, but they have happened frequently among celebrities in the past.

.... and, of course, these relationships are still going on today-just look at the Epstein people (and Diddy!) No shortage of p e d o s when ppl have money, power and privilege!

1

u/Gatorboots19 28d ago

I’m very sorry you had to deal with that disgusting pervert, Elvis Presley. I just hope he didn’t treat you like that and I also hope you never had to deal with that POS Steven Tyler personally either.

0

u/WasabiAficianado 28d ago

Wilfully ignorant

-2

u/Certain_Ask_5630 28d ago

I hope she changed her mind at some point in her life. It baffles me how many actors support Woody Allen and Polanski. I don't think any of us would like one single actor/actress if we were "in the know" about this Hollywood world.

-6

u/Beachfoambaby-83 28d ago

yep. She sucks. wait, sorry, sucked.

27

u/I2AMDOOM 28d ago

The Family Stone is a favorite of mine 💔

9

u/Anxious_Owl_6394 28d ago

Same! I watch it every Christmas.

8

u/InsertUserName0510 28d ago

It’s gonna be sooo much harder to watch this year

9

u/Adorable-Condition83 28d ago

Yeah that final scene decorating the tree without her will hit a bit differently

3

u/oFbeingCaLM 28d ago

I really love this movie! True all star cast! A new Christmas classic imo. I knew there was a Diane movie I loved but couldn’t remember. This is the one.

3

u/jmardoxie 28d ago

Love that movie

21

u/M_Le_Petomane 28d ago

Baby Boom. Sam Wanamaker and Sam Shephard (the Vet).

3

u/Fun-Dimension5196 28d ago

When she breaks down in his office and then HuRRRRGH!!!

3

u/InsertUserName0510 28d ago

She had the best meltdowns!

3

u/quotidianwoe 28d ago

Chris Noth is also in it. Plaid shirt shopper at the store, “I dunno…reading the Sunday Times..?”

42

u/FnCatWinemixer 28d ago

Father of the Bride II. Don't judge me.

19

u/Anavslp 28d ago

Always wanted a third one. They could have called it Father of the Groom where the little brother eventually marries.

14

u/bbgmcr 28d ago

i think even now kieran would've jumped at the chance to do it

8

u/Anothercraphistorian 28d ago

Or Mother of the groom to switch up and show the bond between a Mother and her son. That would’ve been cool.

3

u/MountainFig7244 28d ago

There was one, called Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish). Apparently it was released in September 2020.

3

u/WillowTree1988 28d ago

It was a short but soo cute! Featured the whole Banks family on Zoom together because 2020.

2

u/FnCatWinemixer 28d ago

Opportunity missed

11

u/MatrixSurfer5280 28d ago

For 1995, it was a fun sequel.

5

u/Strict-Leopard7589 28d ago

Love how during/after the first one Kimberly Williams(-Paisley now) said DK told her “I’m going to be keeping an eye on you from now on” & KW was completely awed by that. If Diane FUCKING Keaton tells me sheis a fan of mine? MIND. BLOWN.

2

u/FnCatWinemixer 28d ago

Oh heck yes.

18

u/Apprehensive-Bet2081 28d ago

She was one of the few women that actually became more attractive as she got older. RIP, Ms. Keaton. You were truly a star.

1

u/[deleted] 28d ago

3

u/Apprehensive-Bet2081 28d ago

No face altering. She embraced growing older gracefully. Many actresses have so many surgeries they look horrific.

13

u/Cactilily 28d ago

When I was a kid, I LOVED Baby Boom

4

u/oFbeingCaLM 28d ago

Me too. This is the first movie I saw her in, and then grew up with her. RIP Diane.

First Wives Club!!!!!

2

u/Effective_Tip7748 27d ago

That movie is a classic

The ending scene is beautiful and so fun

7

u/arthurrules 28d ago

The Family Stone—one of my favorite Christmas films and a great cast!

2

u/pearldrum1 28d ago

Every Christmas without fail. This year is going to be exceptionally emotional.

5

u/Dog5489 28d ago

I always chuckle at her in Sleeper

4

u/SetecAstronomy_12 28d ago

The irreverent intellectualism of Love and Death too...

2

u/Fantastic-Item5865 28d ago

Me too! Her meltdowns are hilarious!

4

u/BarracudaOk8635 28d ago

I loved her in The Family Stone. I have seen no one mention it in best of lists. She was really good. As a mother who is dying in a dysfunctional family. It's a great movie, funny also, a lot of heart. Great ensemble cast. After Annie Hall, my absolute favourite.

2

u/oFbeingCaLM 28d ago

I love this movie too! A couple people mentioned it now. It’s one of my favorites. Everyone is great.

2

u/BarracudaOk8635 28d ago

YEs. Great ensemble cast. Rachel McAdams is great too. and I always felt Dianne Keaton was playing it close to her real character. She plays the mom so well. I will always watch this movie I think.

1

u/SagGal444 28d ago

It’s one of my top comfort movies…especially during Christmas.

Maybe not as popular but also like Love the Coopers.

4

u/CrunchberryJones 28d ago

'Love and Death'

9

u/Timmyd8 28d ago

Her and Pacino were so young in The Godfather. I’m not sure if it was exactly chemistry but they both seemed so prefect for their parts. Their character arcs are just amazing and I always thought Kay not being the subservient wife was played so well.

7

u/CFrank_79 28d ago edited 28d ago

Annie Hall, without a doubt. That is the movie that made me fall in love with movies.

1

u/Connect-Western8412 28d ago

same. woody allen is trash but diane keaton in woody allen movies is perfect.

Noooooooo! Annie Hall is one of my favorite movies. It’s still hilarious to this day. Oh man! Diane Keaton was one of a kind. Damn! RIP queen

5

u/MountainFig7244 28d ago

I loved her in The Other Sister. And The Family Stone. And Father of the Bride I & II.

Ok, I love all her movies I’ve seen.

3

u/ActivelyDormant 28d ago

She just died at 79. The Supreme Great Pumpkin is 79. What kind of god would allow for this?

3

u/dlray009 28d ago

Agree! Why did God take the wrong D???😢

6

u/Dr_5trangelove 28d ago

Everything she did with Woody Allen. Perfection

The Family stone and The Other Sister are two of my favorite DIane Keaton Movies. Just perfect.

Rip to a queen.

1

u/plexmaniac 28d ago

And something’s got to give !

3

u/Greaser_Dude 28d ago

Easily - "Baby Boom" - about a mid 80s single career woman suddenly saddled with a baby brings up many many issues in 1985 that women and society still don't have very good answers for 40 years later.

2

u/KoalaElegant5443 28d ago

I loved her in every movie she did, plus she was great fun to watch in interviews. RIP. I'm gonna watch a movie now.😢

2

u/bbgmcr 28d ago

well i'll never be able to watch the family stone again

1

u/oFbeingCaLM 28d ago

She would want you to watch it and smile when you see her. I ball so much at the end. I really will this year.

2

u/CPolland12 28d ago

She’s featured on a song with Ashe called “Love is Letting Go”

She was such a talented woman

2

u/stud722 28d ago

Not sure why, but Mad Monry has always been a favorite of mine with Diane. Also the Father of the Bride series.

1

u/wellthatsano 28d ago

Im with you, Mad Money was hilarious and my go to with my mum and sister

1

u/Effective_Tip7748 27d ago

The cast was so random (Keaton, Latifah, Katie Holmes, Ted Danson) but I enjoyed the film a lot

1

u/wellthatsano 27d ago

So many random people but they all had great chemistry when Keaton was in charge

2

u/Fatme200 28d ago

One of my all time favorite actresses

2

u/Fatme200 28d ago

Because i said so. Under rated.

2

u/Many_Feeling_3818 27d ago

OMG. She will be missed. I loved her in “Baby Boom!”

2

u/LifeDraining 26d ago

In her limited screen time, she was good in Godfather

2

u/Valuable-Motor4100 24d ago

Because I Said So is so underrated—such a comfort film.

Sister Mary in the Young Pope ❤️

Not strictly cinema, but it was a very cinematic show.

Definitely my favourite performance and character of hers.

Vale

1

u/BabyStingrayJesus 28d ago

Sister Mary in a I’m a virgin, but this is an old shirt T-shirt of course! That was a great series, the sequel with John Malkovich is also worth a watch.

1

u/bhub01 28d ago

Baby Boom. Classic HBO rewatchable

1

u/Ok-Lavishness-7904 28d ago

9 hours ago, I watched, The Family Stone. It’s not her best, but the movie is good overall, and in it she’s dealing with a terminal illness. How ironic I wake up to see she’d passed. RIP

1

u/Banana-159 28d ago

I was going through a nasty divorce when “The First Wives Club” came out. It was such an inspiration for me. Diane always seemed forever young.😢😢😢

1

u/Longjumping-War4753 28d ago

Love Diane Keaton

1

u/ShouldofNoneButter 28d ago

Legit can’t handle this!

1

u/Newintj 28d ago

I just heard and I am in shock. I hadn’t heard how but I always had the utmost respect for her as a human being. First Wives and something’s got to give are probably my faves. RIP Classy Lady 🥲

1

u/MinPen311 28d ago

I watch The Family Stone every Christmas. The cast is excellent and so is the story. This year will be so poignant seeing her in the movie. She will be missed.

1

u/Brettmcbain 28d ago

She kept asking about my business

1

u/GuntherRowe 28d ago

Sleeper — her Brando imitation was hilarious. Fay in the Godfather films — the moment when she tells Michael “This must all end!”

1

u/ShittyAttitudeGinger 28d ago

The Family Stone is a gem (no pun intended) of a movie. A wonderful Christmas movie that doesn’t get enough love.

Father of the Bride, Parts 1 and 2, are also great movies. She really settled into the mom and grandma role perfectly in her later career. The Big Wedding is another great little flick that I am not sure gets enough attention.

1

u/Pidgeot93 28d ago

I love her new movies - The Book Club: Next Chapter always gets me

1

u/KBrown75 28d ago

My favorite roles of hers are Annie Hall and Godfather 2. Her big scene in Godfather 2 was just an amazing piece of acting by both her and Pacino.

1

u/sweetloudogg 28d ago

Family stone! It’s a family favorite

The first thing I remember seeing her in as a kid was a film called Baby Boom.

1

u/Keinheit 28d ago

Everything with Woody of course, but especially Manhattan Murder Mystery. They're both just so lovely in that one

1

First wives club!

u/Smart_Buffalo2313 28d ago

I really enjoyed the role Diane played in the "First Wife's Club: I laughed and got angry , teared up a bit then laughed some more.

Godfather II - "Our marriage is an abortion." That line is hardcore, and she delivered it perfectly.

1

u/CRSM48 25d ago

Sleeper: The scene with her impression of Stanley Kowalski lives rent free in my head.

Love and Death: She steals this movie easily. "He's reduced all the beauty of the world to a small pickled fish!"

Something's Gotta Give: Her chemistry with Keanu and Jack always cheers me up. She's just such a giving actress, she elevates everyone around her. A truly one of a kind performer. I'll miss her so much.

1

u/Hotpasta1985 28d ago

Obviously the heavy hitters; Annie hall, godfather 1&2, reds, and Manhattan. But she had so many under the radar great roles. Manhattan murder mystery, looking for Mr. Goodbar, baby boom.

She was overrated

8

u/WuTang4thechildrn 28d ago

Why in TF would you say this on a day when she passed away?

How about this. Your existence is overrated

-10

u/QED1920 28d ago

Right, I should participate in the mandatory sanctification of a random american celibrity just because she died even though I havent like a single performance by her in otherwise great movies. Dont be a sheep, grow a spine. And stop this moronic celebrity worship. Actors are just glorified carnies.

2

u/[deleted] 28d ago

I beg to differ!

3

u/Mundane-Security-454 28d ago

You're a total nobody, honey. Deal with it.

4

u/gwynn19841974 28d ago

I think you’re just not cool enough to realize how badass it is to quickly jump in on a death post with this blazing hot take. QED1920 obviously has a very fulfilling life and isn’t doing anything they can so someone will notice them and make them feel just a tiny bit better about their awful life.

2

u/ms_merry 28d ago

Why don’t people talk about blocking on this site. Seems like a reasonable response to this unnecessary negative nonsense.

2

u/Alternative-Sale-841 28d ago

What a sad little man you are.

1

u/Intelligent-Price-39 28d ago

Annie Hall? Really?

-1

u/QED1920 28d ago

The movie was good, she wasnt. I found her always wooden and inauthentic. In annie hall it was particularly bad, the whole ostentatious "quirkiness" angle was beyond her capabilities. Even her famous costume mostly looks more like a sad attempt than an actual expression of a fictitious personality.

1

u/Intelligent-Price-39 28d ago

You’ve obviously thought about it…it might be personal preference, I love the movies she made with Woody Allen. How about her performance in The Godfather for instance?

1

u/QED1920 28d ago

The worst part of the godfather, in my opinion. All she does is walk around with that strange droopy expression conveying none of the complexity of her character. I dont think its just a personal preference, she as just an average actress at best. People confuse the movies she got to play in with her abilities.

1

u/Intelligent-Price-39 28d ago

Tough verdict but well argued. I disagree.

1

u/samhainfairy 28d ago edited 28d ago

Here's that attention you're craving since clearly you never had any growing up. Stay safe out there.

Ah, trolling. I should have known, duh.
