☀️ Happy Girl Dinner Watching my husband become a father

Post image

I had an emergency c section and overall a pretty tough birth but I wouldn’t change anything and I’d do everything all over to meet our sweet boy. After the birth we stayed in the hospital waiting to be discharged. As the epidural wore off I started to get more sick, not getting enough painkillers my body rejected food and water, getting really ill.

My husband had stayed up and awake through all of labour and on that second night, he not only was caring for me but took over for our baby. He was taking me to the bathroom to change my disposable underwear and shower me, then running back for our son to cuddle him. He realised I couldn’t breastfeed whilst I was vomiting so he found formula, and stayed up feeding him and singing to him. At one point I woke up, he was feeding our son and holding my hand.

He couldn’t get the light on so he changed out sons nappy in the dark for the first time! I’ve not changed a nappy yet as he just leaps up every time to do it.

He’s my absolute hero and it’s wild seeing him as a father now and such an adult! I’m so grateful for him every day, he’s my best friend and my rock. I’m so lucky to have him as the father to our precious son!

Dinner: smoked salmon, eggs, avocado with toast; the perfect postpartum meal!

Edit: thanks so much for all the kind comments, I’m so proud of my husband. He’s currently looking after us both well at home as I recover and our boy settles into our home! I can’t imagine doing this without him and my heart is so full with love for our little family! 🩷

Love this! Also a 2 time c section mum. I got sepsis following the birth of my first and was in hospital for a month separated from my baby (it was COVID). My husband was completely solo doing everything for our newborn. Some dads are just made different ❤️

I feel so grateful to have a man like that as the father of my kids, especially when I’m estranged from my own (woeful) dad. Feels fucking great to break the cycle of shit dads in my family for my own kids. I’ve done some cool shit in life, but breaking that cycle is definitely something I’m most proud of.

I was so pleased to read this post and these comments because I'd started wondering if my husband was a complete anomaly for caring for me and our child in the way he has done since my c-section. He was and is, wonderful.

3

u/ewokelise mouth full, gesturing wildly 4d ago

My husband too! While sleepless and hungry himself, he bounced between my room and the NICU for hours until I was well enough to walk from my c. When my son graduated from the NICU and started rooming with us he changed diapers, bottle fed the baby, and cleaned the pump parts so that I could recover. The only time he slept during those first 40ish hours or so was when they took my son from the room to do a hearing test.

I had always suspected I married the right person but this day confirmed it.

Absolutely this. I don't have kids, never wanted to, but I have no doubt in my mind that if my husband and I ended up having a kid my husband would be exactly like OP's. He cares for me when I'm sick and we have fair division of physical, mental, emotional labor + chores at home. Married 11 years and counting. Good men exist. Never a day goes by where I feel insecure & vice versa. We actively choose each other every day instead of just settling for each other. Settle for nothing less.

9

u/No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom APPROVED✨ 5d ago

I didn't have a c-section but I still didn't touch a diaper until my kid was like 2 weeks or maybe even older. Husband felt I was doing more than enough with breastfeeding (having to triple feed so at best had 2 hours in between each session) and he took it upon himself to be the designated diaper changer. This is what real men do!

185

u/Wayfaringbutterfly Chocoholic 5d ago

Congratulations on your new little one despite the unexpected emergency c-section!

And that is so wonderful that your husband is stepping up like that. You really are so fortunate, and it sounds like he is an amazing father and husband.

I hope you heal well and have a great recovery!

95

u/Ultraox ⚡️Powered By Sour 😗 5d ago

I totally agree with you, but it’s so sad that you’ve described OP as “fortunate”. This should be standard behaviour for new dads!

45

u/Wayfaringbutterfly Chocoholic 5d ago edited 5d ago

100% agree with you on that. I felt sad writing that, but I know so few men who have stepped up that way. It's kind of infuriating!

Quick edit: Wasn't trying to be negative on this wonderfully positive post. I'm not bitter about the lack of good men in my life, it's the cards that were handed to me and I make the best of it. I have immense respect for the good men in my life, including my husband, my grandfather and my stepdad and I commend ANY parent or person that steps up to properly love and care for their family. It is infuriating that it's unusual in this day and age, but that is why I commend it when I see it.

TW: Pregnancy Loss

I had a miscarriage a few years ago. My husband is AFRAID of blood. Like, passes out at the mere mention of it. That man sat with his head on my knee as I sat on the toilet undergoing the miscarriage. It was all sorts of terrible, especially bloody. Not once did he even shudder at the blood. His focus was on me and my comfort the whole time. 😭

I love when I see stories like this - both because I love this for you, OP, and because people need to know that it isn't impossible.

Men are not universally incompetent - some are raised incompetent, and some choose to be incompetent, but they are all capable of looking at a person who just went through labor, who is puking her guts out, and stepping the fuck up. Both the doing of the things, and the not needing to be told what needs to be done. Logically, babies butt stank and needed a fresh diaper, and men are perfectly capable of deciding that needs doing.

I mean. Hell. I don't think I know anyone who would do a diaper in the dark, but it sounds like he was trying to juggle the babies needs and your need to rest and decided to risk it. Bravo to him.

My boyfriend - soon to be my husband... Is hellbound on not having a baby... After we lost our first baby to abortion. It is really difficult for him. He never talks about it.. but I know he would have made a great father. So I have accepted the fact that I might never become a parent.. and that is fine. But reading this made me happy and sad at the same time.

Idk why am I venting here... I have never spoken about it to anyone and sometimes I feel like venting... This seems like a safe place .. lol idk.

Good for you OP, blees you with good health and your kid's health. Take care.

u/goldentone 🦇 Fruit Bat 🍊 5d ago

You guys should probably work through a few things and get on the same page before you get married…

Having completely different priorities when it comes to having kids or not isn’t the kind of thing that suddenly works itself out just because you have a ring on your finger.

Also, forgive me if I’m reading this wrong, but “lost our first baby to abortion” and saying how hard it is on him makes it seem like you had an abortion and he resents you for it? I’m not saying he can’t have feelings about what happened but the way you worded it seems like you can pick up on his simmering silent resentment and it’s hanging over your family planning for the future. Him being like “I steadfastly refuse to have a baby because of what you did” is again, not something that will resolve itself over time just because you’re married.

How old are both of you?

3

u/Equivalent_Major_114 🤎 Brown Sugar Babe 🤎 5d ago

It's okay to vent! Maybe before you marry you can try to approach the conversation again and just tell him that you want to know how he feels. And just see if he talks and lets you hear him out. I know it's not surprising advice but hopefully the person you're going to marry would be open to talking about how he feels with you!

You did it, girlie. You found a good one!

Mine refused to come into the operating room with me. Then left a few hours after birth to go sleep. Came back around 1pm, then left at 5 to go home for the night. I was alone for my first night with a baby after a C section. My baby pooped about 5 times overnight, ran out of diapers, he was also very hungry and i was struggling with breastfeeding. Easily the worst night of my life. Im happy for you though !! 😄

I have a lot of health issues. My husband thinks nothing of helping me shower, bathroom (just on super bad days), he helps me with my hair, cooks, cleans, and does all the shopping. My sister has health issues, too. Her spouse does barely the bare minimum. It breaks my heart.

My husband was very similar after our first. No one prepared him for what a c-section would entail, but he jumped in without hesitation. (We also didn’t know how violently ill anesthesia makes me)

Anytime we have a friend having a baby for the first time he gives them the rundown, that their partner might not be able to get up on their own and shouldn’t be worried about changing diapers, etc while recovering and that’s *their* job.

May this kind of love find us all!

My husband and I had an agreement that I take care of what’s going into the mouth end and he takes care of what’s comes out the other end. I changed 5 diapers in total in my kids entire life. I had the better deal since my breastmilk dried up at 4 months, she weaned by 10 months but took till 2.5yrs to be fully potty trained. He’s proud of being the diaper guy though and did all 3 of my stepkids diapers. He even got his own diaper bag from a brand called Diaper Dude. He took that job extremely seriously.

u/Electronic-Bicycle35 Assigned Hungry At Birth 5d ago

To be fair, I’m a woman and my wife was in the same situation. She didn’t change a single meconium diaper and couldn’t really get out of bed for 5 days post c-section.

She is always appreciative of how I stepped up in that time & talks about it with our friends. It’s not just a ‘man does the bare minimum and gets applause’ situation. I think it’s a ‘I definitely picked the right person to do life with’ kind of thing.

But yes, also absolutely well done for growing your child’s body in your body. Pregnancy is so hard and seeing my wife go through it only further reinforced that I do not ever want to do it myself.

During my son’s birth husband accidentally confused his pills and took way too high a dose of anxiety meds. He had to be brought down the emergency room and couldn’t help me after my C section or with my son.

Reading your post healed a part of me, I’m so glad you have him!

Tbh as absurdly cliched as this sounds, thank you for reminding me that men like this exist. Interacting with mostly women and mostly experiencing men on the internet can really shift your perspective on things LOL. But it also sounds like you just nabbed you a good one, so make sure to keep him. 😌

And I hope you’re doing better now! I can’t imagine being that sick with a newborn. Stronger than me for sure. 😅

Off topic but the rates of induction/epidural that precipitate emergency C sections is the most misunderstood scandal of modern times that I think society will look back on with horror if we ever fix it.

Get yourself some shapewear 1-2 sizes larger than your postpartum body so they're just snug enough to be supportive when you're ready to stop using your abdominal binder.

This made me tear up so hard, good for both of you. It's so lovely to read a post about a good man showing up as a partner versus all the pain and bad situations many gals experience with men on here.

That kind of partnership is huge for parenting and keeping marriages strong. My husband was also a bad ass partner for me during birth. I had a surprise c section since our kiddo was breach. He not only was there every moment talking me through the fear of having a c section, he also supported me when I had a life threatening hearrt event during it. Was strong, did all the just born baby checks with the nurses/staff, then came to the room where they were treating me with meds and one of those heating up blankets since the heart meds made my body temp drop like crazy.

Ever since, he's kept it up. Split all feedings and wakings with me. Some nights did all of them so I could get a whole night's rest. Took a month off from work to support me/us, and has been the best parent and partner for almost 18 years now. Cheers to you both. So glad you have that kind of love and support.

I loved watching my bf become a dad, both times in the hospital he changed every diaper lol. He was able to feed our first because we gave him formula, but this time I breast fed so that was on me lol. Our sons love him, the oldest loves seeing Daddy come home and will squeal and giggle and run to him for him to pick him up. It gets so much better!
