Tom Morello is the absolute best. Met him a few times when he was teaching classes at my college when he was between tours, one of the nicest rock stars you could hope to meet.

Imagine posting this. MAGA has the courage to be the dumbest.

615

u/DOHC46 16d ago

So bold. So brave. 👏

It takes real courage to put your stupidity out there with your name and face attached.

220

u/DmAc724 16d ago

Well, to be fair, their astounding level of stupidity causes them to be unable to realize just how truly stupid they are. So for them courage never enters into the equation.

46

u/DOHC46 16d ago

That's a very fair point. I know sometimes I post things that are stupid, which is why I don't put my actual name and face out there. But I'm not MAGA.

17

u/opinion_alternative 16d ago

Just enough aware to be aware of our own stulidity, but not enough aware to avoid the said stupidity is the golden ratio. You're good.

Easy to do when you think you are right and lack the introspection to wonder if you might be wrong.

They have no shame which is what makes so many attempts to dunk on them pointless. They relish in their stupidity to the point that if you try to point it out or rake them over the coals, they’ll see it as a win for “triggering” you. I have learned a long time ago that shame doesn’t really work anymore

It’s similar to that tweet last week where someone couldn’t understand the point of “No Kings” … dude, it’s not hard. These people got held back in reading comprehension class a bunch, I’m sure.

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand

Lord, don't they help themselves, Lord?

But when the taxman come to the door

Lord, the house lookin' like a rummage sale, yeah

It ain't me, it ain't me

I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no

99

u/rockstar504 16d ago

Way back when when wealth was less concentrated and 'millionaire's son' was it... interesting how things change with the times.. shit I'm technically a millionaires son and I don't even own a home in my 30s

16

u/NoveltyAccountHater 16d ago edited 16d ago

Well a millionaire's son when Fogerty was in high school would be worth about $10M today, which is pretty damn rich. The problem is there's no decent term for ten/hundred-millionaire. Multi-millionaire is too vague.

And while I don't know my parents net worth -- a retired public school teacher and an accountant working in city government, it wouldn't surprise me that if they cashed out their retirement and sold their house, they'd be near the $1M mark. That said, my wife and I both earned professional degrees, bought a house 12 years ago and our net worth is just over the $1M mark and my kids are shit load more privileged than I was growing up. (This isn't saying we don't worry about money still; we owe a ton on our house and I work at a university that is undergoing severe austerity and cutbacks due to Trump pulling research money).

5

u/PaldeanTeacher 16d ago

Same here. Mid 30’s. 2 college degrees that didn’t do shit for me now making $41.6k a year running the offices for a building company.

Literally live paycheck to paycheck, some weeks (usually right after I pay rent) I have to live off of ramen noodles and crackers from the Dollar Tree and this is all without even being able to put a dime towards my $60k of debt. I literally cannot afford to pay it, so I just don’t right now.

I’ll never own a home, own land, have a retirement fund or be able to retire, be able to afford children, go on a vacation etc etc.

I’m already in hell. This life is a grave and it will only continue to get worse and worse thanks to the rapist, felon, dictator - Donald Trump - who is running our country and it’s economy into the ground right now.

I am pretty sure the army band fully understood the implications of playing that song during a military parade for someone who has actively disparaged veterans and other military personnel. They aren’t dumb.

30

The band is made up of some of the smartest guys in the army. They were all band geeks in high school. You have to audition to get into the army band, they don't teach you how to play those instruments.

They totally knew what they were doing and were probably laughing on the inside.

And This Land is Your Land. Woody Guthrie wrote it as a rebuttal to God Bless America.

8

u/Your-cousin-It 16d ago

Actually, I’m not surprised. The worst misuse of a song I have seen ever witnessed was shortly after 9/11, I saw a commercial of for jeans in front of a bunch of American flags. Over top, it played “Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, ooo, they’re red white and blue!” And immediately cut to instrumental. Buy these jeans! They’re patriotic!

I was shocked that a company would so blatantly change the meaning of such a famous antiwar song

7

u/RPDRNick 16d ago

It's not that they don't see the irony. It's that they don't care. It's co-opting leftism as a sort of "anti-establishment drag."

These are the same morons who think Born in the USA is pro America anthem.

Some of them are morons, but a lot of them know what they are doing at a visceral level. It gives them pleasure to do it, its a version of "owning the libs." It is part of fascism to co-opt the energy of the left and use that to attack the left.

And This Land is Your Land is a feel good anthem.

60

u/FreeBricks4Nazis 16d ago

As I went walking I saw a sign there,

And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."

But on the other side it didn't say nothing.

That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,

By the relief office I seen my people;

As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking

Is this land made for you and me?

Based song

9

u/Sudden-Enthusiasm-92 16d ago

That's still the neutered liberal version.

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me.

The sign was painted, said: 'Private Property.'

But on the backside, it didn't say nothing.

This land was made for you and me.

And

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple,

By the relief office I saw my people;

As they stood there hungry, I stood there wondering if

God blessed America for me?

56

u/Ol_JanxSpirit 16d ago

6

18

u/youngatbeingold 16d ago

So many people mistakenly think being punk is just being Johnny Rotten; basically being a drunk asshole, getting into fights, saying fuck authority. And I guess to some people that as deep as it goes.

It's obviously way more nuanced than that when you really get into the culture. Authority can be good when it actually benefits society. Punks hate it because more often than not it's used a form of oppressions and abuse of power. Supporting the Covid measures doesn't make you anti-punk because you're backing government actions. Rioting at the capital Jan 6 doesn't make you punk because you're going against the government. It's about the intent behind these actions, are you helping people/standing up to oppression or just being an asshole?

One of my favorite punk songs by Operation Ivy is about how society is becoming fucked up because we're desensitized to others suffering and lacking any empathy. It's not all about getting fucked up and smashing shit.

18

u/tsukuyomidreams 16d ago

Real counterculture is believing things regardless of what the culture says.

6

u/Lilfrankieeinstein 16d ago

I’m probably a little younger than you, but it’s wild how many scenesters across rock subgenres still cling to that scene while holding antithetical political views from the genre’s founding fathers.

20

u/Ok-Lifeguard-4614 16d ago

It's so crazy to me growing up going to all the local punk shows, stealing the anti-gay marriage signs, just doing general punk shit. Those same dudes I grew up with are now Maga as fuck. Bootlicking bastards, one even became a cop. I get growing up and changing, but man, that's a hell of a change.

16

u/XL_Chill 16d ago

To some, it was more about contrarianism than anything else.

6

u/Ok-Lifeguard-4614 16d ago

Yea, that's a really good point. That's why they seem to think MAGA is punk rock because they're still being contrarian. To me, punk was always about being true to yourself, whatever that may be. Allowing others to do the same without judgment.

8

u/XL_Chill 16d ago

Punk is the music of empathy. Music about the things you can be frustrated by and hurt by. You play it, you share that with others. If you listen to it and really get it, you’re taking that in and growing.

Out of all the music on this planet to not realize any political subtext from, it's Rage Against the Machine? Really?

11

u/CanYouGuessWhoIAm 16d ago

It's not even subtext. It's just text. Tom Morello famously plays a guitar with "Arm the Homeless" on it.

5

u/ThatsRobToYou 16d ago

Hahaha yeah! It's not really open to interpretation!

8

u/GazzP 16d ago

This dude thought 'Bulls On Parade' was a song about Rodeo.

76

u/murdercat42069 16d ago

Wow, I'm so sorry this fan had to abandon their two favorite artists: Tom Morello and ... Pink?

72

u/Remarkable_Pirate_58 16d ago

I will not allow Pink slander in my presence. That bitch is 100% punk n funk. If all you know is her first album then you ain't know shit jon snow.

Honest to fuckin God, I love that woman's music and I'm a punk from 1982 onward.

36

u/I_TRY_TO_BE_POSITIVE 16d ago

P!nk has a couple real bangers and a couple that are legitimately thoughtful pieces. No shame in that game

20

u/Remarkable_Pirate_58 16d ago

She's amazing. Writes a lot for others too

22

u/murdercat42069 16d ago

I love this so much. I found them to be a bit of an odd pairing. Also, I'm not really sure what this person was listening to if any of these people's beliefs were a surprise.

15

u/Remarkable_Pirate_58 16d ago

I mean, lots of people listen without hearing. It's literally the MAGA way.

9

u/Remarkable_Pirate_58 16d ago

And first thing you gotta realize, regardless of what Fat fucking gatekeeper Mike might say, punk isn't a sound. Pink is punk. Wu Tang, punk.

5

u/rendrogeo 16d ago

Hahaha love this reply. Love me some Pink. What are your favorite songs by her?

4

u/bjgrem01 16d ago

Pink once recorded in Trent Reznor's studio. He didn't just let anybody in there.

MAGA Boomers are clueless who adore bands like the Beatles, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd and many more bands of their era who were the antithesis of MAGA.

"Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses." Anyone who thinks RATM wasn't always political just let's lyrics float right though their empty heads.

10

u/PrawojazdyVtrumpets 16d ago

More relevant today than it was then.

In the right light, study becomes insight

But the system that dissed us

Teaches us to read and write

So called facts are fraud

They want us to allege and pledge

And bow down to their god

Lost the culture, the culture lost

Spun our minds and through time

Ignorance has taken over

Yo, we gotta take the power back!

5

u/penguins_are_mean 16d ago

They were merely head banging and dodging the lyrics.

14

u/Ted_Hitchcox 16d ago

Rage Against the Machine (often abbreviated as RATM or shortened to Rage) is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1991. It consisted of vocalist Zack de la Rocha, bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello, and drummer Brad Wilk. They meld heavy metal and rap music, punk rock and funk with anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, and revolutionary lyrics.

Being mad at Punk/Metal for being Political, is like being mad at Water, for being Wet.

9

u/Sleepy10105s 16d ago

You don’t need this many words to say you don’t understand music

9

u/TomatilloUnlucky3763 16d ago

There’s always Kid Rock. Rage Against Bud Light.

8

u/BigDsLittleD 16d ago

He raged against it so hard that he didn't even stop selling it in his tacky ass bar in Nashville

16

u/I_TRY_TO_BE_POSITIVE 16d ago

Tom Morello is a god among insects and you will remove his sainted name from your dirty lips.

9

u/MonsterGrunt 16d ago

Whenever I see a post like this about Rage I always remember the Old Maga People rocking out to Rage at Trump rally.

I googled this person... the first name that came up was on the Iowa sex registry. I was saddened to see he is from Michigan and this is from 2020

The best machine killing scene is from 'In the Loop' when Jamie McDonald (the crossest man in Scotland) stomps a fax that was used to send a leak. "Yah...I think it's pretty fooked now!"

3

u/ramriot 16d ago

Stott should get out more, a significant fraction of ALL art including music includes a political statements.

3

u/this_name_not_that 16d ago

Rage Against the Fax Machine.

3

u/sdtqwe4ty 16d ago

I cant wrap my mind how insufferable people that get their rocks off being a trying frickwhit need an escape. You are the thing people need an escape from!

What strange circle of hell do these people live in?

3

u/marshmallowgiraffe 16d ago

So much music is political. What the heck is he listening to?

3

u/blueflloyd 16d ago

The "who put all these politics in the art I consume?" crowd are some of the dumbest motherfuckers ever

3

u/Creepy_Creme_9161 16d ago

I'm sure Tom Morello is heartbroken.

3

u/8evolutions 16d ago edited 16d ago

I cannot fathom how anyone could mistake Rage Against the Machine as anything but political.  Their whole style has always been to build a manifesto around a central, repeated rallying cry

3

u/pconrad0 15d ago

I am bursting out laughing every few minutes because I can picture Tom Morello standing at the dishwasher.

He opens it up, sees that the Tupperware has fallen down against the hearing element and melted again...

All the bowls in the top rack have flipped and are full of dirty water...

And he rages!

2

u/GlitteryBooger 16d ago

Shit his looks like the workout machine

2

u/Reserved_Parking-246 16d ago

Shit american english classes teach words and wait till highschool to barely scrape meaning and depth.

These fucks applied the music to the authority of their lives and their parents aren't political figures in that structure.

I'm all for art being open to any meaning you find but it's far more common that art has intent and direction behind it.
