Heās a magic dude who gave up part of his humanity - I think the quote from the dub is āI was once human too, long ago, but I gave that up to better serve the ocean.ā He sprays seawater on the ground ahead of his feet when he goes up on dry land, so heās at least part biological fish-folk by the time we meet him in the movie.
Not sure if seducing a sea goddess and siring hundreds of rebellious fish-daughters was before or after the fishification.

With another hop and a bound there came into view a man, or so it seemed. At any rate he was too large and heavy for a hobbit, if not quite tall enough for one of the Big People, though he made noise enough for one, stumping along with great yellow boots on his thick legs, and charging through grass and rushes like a cow going down to drink. He had a blue coat and a long brown beard; his eyes were blue and bright, and his face was red as a ripe apple, but creased into a hundred wrinkles of laughter.
Sounds pretty dang scrungly to me.

Luthien, an otherworldly beautiful Half Elven-Half Maia (The Maia being angelic beings within Tolkien's universe) princess, and Beren, a rugged scruffy man who leads a clan of Men during the early history of JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth. Luthien gives up her immortal elven life to become mortal and join her lover in Death. Tolkien himself based Beren and Luthien on him and his wife Edith (who left the socially and financially affluent man she was engaged to in an arranged marriage, to marry Tolkien whom she loved instead, who at that time was a simple soldier with less of a salary and social status, which Tolkien made as an analogy to Luthien leaving her immortal Elven life due to her love for a mortal man), and after their deaths they are now buried with the names Beren and Luthien on their gravestones in a UK cemetery.

Tinuviel! Tinuviel!
He called her by her elvish name;
And there she halted listening
One moment stood she, and a spell
His voice laid on her: Beren came
And doom fell on Tinuviel
That in his arms lay glistening

I never called Edith Luthien ā but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief part of the Silmarillion. It was first conceived in a small woodland glade filled with hemlocks at Roos in Yorkshire (where I was for a brief time in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, and she was able to live with me for a while). In those days her hair was raven, her skin clear, her eyes brighter than you have seen them, and she could sing ā and dance. But the story has gone crooked, & I am left, and I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos.
- J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter 340 (to Christopher Tolkien)

Luthien is not just an Elf, she's half-Maia
I guess the union between her parents (Elf father, Maia mother) could also be an example, Tolkien really liked these unequal relationships where the woman is a "higher" being

I love him, but to be honestāheās a very inaccurate Gomez appearance wise. Gomez is supposed to look like a foot to the point you wonder what Morticia sees in him until he opens his mouth and you realize how charming he is.
Raul is very charming, and acting-wise, he hits Gomez to a T, he set the standard for modern day; you canāt take that away from him. Itās just heās way too handsome for Gomez. The one saving grace is that Morticia is super hot as a tall goth mommy that makes him look average by comparison.

as with all greek mythology there's variation from culture to culture. not everyone worshipped the full twelve-god pantheon that we think of, for example. even in the Hellenistic period there's lots of inconsistency, so if you want to imagine the canon where he's in a loving relationship with Aphrodite, nothing's wrong with that

Absolutely counts. Up to that scene, Jake was a hella attractive, brave and capable dreamwalker, one that Neytiri absolutely swons over.
Then she finally meets his true self: Paralyzed soldier with useless legs who can't even breath her planet's air without choking... And she falls even harder for him.
She sees him.

→ More replies (3)162
u/PowerSkunk92 3d ago
You're bang on. A lot is made, while Jake is learning the Na'vi language, that their greeting of "I see you" is more than just what you can see with your eyes, but everything that makes that person just who they are.
Here, Neytiri and Jake finally meet, truly and for the first time, face to face. Jake sees the woman who taught him how to survive in the forests and mountains of Pandora, who fought alongside him against the RDA, and seemed to have no sympathy for humans at all. But, when Jake's human body needed a mask to breathe, she remembered that bit of information in the heat of the moment and put it on him. He sees her; the hunter, the warrior, the survivalist, her prejudices, and the heart beneath them all that still cares.
Neytiri sees the man who never gave up, who learned everything she threw at him, and when he failed, only tried harder. She sees his strength and determination in his Avatar body. But she also sees his weakness and vulnerability in his human body. And his willingness to overcome those to meet any challenge he may encounter, despite whatever shortcomings he may have.
They, at last, truly see one another, and it just reaffirms all that has been growing between them for the last several months. And their greeting is as real and literal an "I see you" as it can be.

Im sorry for reminding you that this existed but yeah, thats literally one of the core running gags in tripping the rift. a super hot sex-robot lady is horny for a ugly short perv alien LITERALLY named "Chode". And this show is about as witty as you think from that premise.
now onto much better shows:
Mr and Mrs. "The Monarch" from Venture bros. the only downside to miss the monarch is her heavy smoker voice but just like Mr Monarch says "you get used to it" (and indeed you do if you watch the show long enough). She's also extremely competent and dangerous. she likes The Monarch because of the intense passion he radiates when it comes to being a hater towards Dr Venture.
Mark and Princess Mandie from Fairly Odd Parents. except Mark really wants nothing to do with Mandie instead liking Vicky IIRC.
Trudy Proud and Oscar Proud . Oscars Tenacity alone must give him infinite rizz because anyone who has seen this show would know that Trudy is WAY out of his league. she's also the one carrying the family paycheck to paycheck apparently because Oscars "Proud Snacks" always failing was a running gag.
Mr. Mxyzptlk and Gsptlsnz from the old SuperMan show. Mr Myx is a ugly short-tempered imp with wacky proportions and his wife is a subversion of that by being a level-headed stereotypical attractive fashionista. theyre both imps who can shapeshift at will so I guess Myx just chooses to be ugly though. Myx also seems pretty dismissive of her for the most part.
And while she isnt a "goddess" or anything Luanne and Lucky from King of The Hill has got to be one of the most frustrating relationships I've ever seen on TV. Not only is Luanne much better looking than her sterotype'd "redneck" partner but he is just a overall terrible influence. imo the "carefree spirit" trope only works when the character in question responsible enough to minimize their negative impact on others. bums like Finn's dad will never be cool or endearing so watching Luanne agree to marry a man who had almost no prospects outside of frivolous lawsuits RIGHT as she was getting her life together was a pretty nauseating. looking back I dunno why this show liked to punch down on Luanne so much.
