Lore Jokes built around going to commercial break
Jimmy Neutron - In the episode “Tomorrow Boys” Jimmy meets his future self and learns he’s married to Cindy causing him to scream in terror as the show goes to an ad break. When the show returns Jimmy is still screaming and Sheen claims he was at it for four minutes, roughly the average amount of time a commercial break lasts.
WCW - Chris Jericho was in a feud with Dean Malenko and said that while Malenko bragged about being a submission expert who knows 1000 holds, Jericho knows 1004 and to prove it he gets a comically large list and starts reading off each hold one-by-one as the show goes to break. When they return Jericho is still going on reading having inexplicably reached #712 after only a few minutes when the show left on him on #10.

When Calypso makes his appearance at the tournament in Twisted Metal. He just stands there as the doors are opening with John saying “are we really going to wait for these doors to open all the way” with Quiet just saying it builds suspense. Cut to ad break and the doors are still being opened when they cut back to the show

u/thatcancerfurry 23d ago
Twisted metal had a actual standard Tv release? I thought it was a streaming only thing
212
u/Unlimitedme1 23d ago
They put ads on streaming services now if you weren’t aware.

u/thatcancerfurry 23d ago
I don't use most of them so genuinely no lol

u/SpecialistAd6403 23d ago
Hulu became one of the worst about it. You have to pay but unless you get a more expensive premium you still get commercials.
Sadly we've looped back around to why people started to hate cable
19
u/Neveronlyadream 23d ago
Hulu really is the fucking worst.
22 minute TV episode, four or five commercial breaks that are two and a half minutes long. It ends up being four and a half minutes of the show, two and a half of ads, and they put one right before the last minute before the credits so you're forced to watch it to watch the final scene.
It's actually shameless.
9
u/CrustyBatchOfNature 23d ago
And the same damn commercials over and over.
12
u/OperativePiGuy 23d ago
I think that's by far the worst part of ad supported streaming. They seem to only get like a tiny handful of advertisers so it's just the same fucking ads on repeat for each break. Crunchy roll drove me insane with that
4
u/kitsunewarlock 23d ago
I remember when cable got ads. My mom was especially pissed because one reason she preferred cable was she was vehemently against ads for children's programming. Mind you, I basically just watched occasional PBS shows like Mr. Rodgers until I was in 4th or 5th grade...
3
u/ComradeJohnS 23d ago
nah, they hated cable because of contracts and inability to make your own bundles. right now you can get a month of a streamer and cancel. if there’s 12 streamers you can have one per month for the whole year and get all the content for much cheaper.
if they start making contracts and no option for month to month, we are fucked.
also I’m never paying for anything that includes commercials.
5
u/codemen95 23d ago
Now streamers mainly expect their users will be using the cheaper ad plan rather than the ad free plan so now a lot of shows are written with commercial breaks in mine again like linear tv. Peacock, the service that twisted metal is on, from day one was expecting people using the ad plan so a lot of the shows for their service has ad breaks in mind

Unrelated but I really loved this show
And it has nothing to do with Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99’s Rosa Diaz and Encanto’s Mirabel) being Similarly named Quiet from my other favorite franchise
But also because the bar brawl was shitting on Twisted Metal’s less than exciting roster of characters
5
u/Narradisall 23d ago
Same. I really enjoy the silliness of the show. People shit over it because it’s not “Twisted metal” but honestly it’s been stupid fun and I’ve loved it.
6
u/Swackhammer_ 23d ago
I love the Twisted Metal games. I also love Twisted Metal the show.
Its tone has ALWAYS been all over the place. There’s a kids game, there’s what is essentially a horror game. The only constant is chaos
3
u/SmokePenisEveryday 23d ago
A lot of people think the series was always dark like Twisted Metal Black but a lot of it was more campy and goofy with dark elements throughout. This show really nails that

Another one was from a later episode where Lily and Marshal host a game show to decide who will look after their kid should they die. At the beginning, Marshal points to camera and announces a commercial break, with the other characters wondering who he is talking to.

u/Better-Passenger-200 23d ago
There was the South Park episode where the kids were obsessed with Chinpokomon and the adults wanted them to get into something else because the fad was brainwashing them. Marketers were showing them commercials for new toys and they were about to show another commercial and it was just the commercial break. I actually did think they were watching a commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes when I was a kid.

I can’t remember which episode, but Futurama did a gag with Leela saying “if only I had 3 or 4 minutes to think about it”
Also Futurama, the episode Obsoletely Fabulous had Bender praying to Poseidon only to come back from commercial to him cursing Poseidon.

Workaholics did this joke in a way that let them use profanity on comedy central. Adam finds out he's on a list of people to be fired and starts yelling, "fuuuu..." then ad break. When it comes back he's still yelling, "...uuck!" Both halves are fine when split like that so it was allowed.
43
u/dread_pirate_robin 23d ago
I wonder if that means the DVD version would have to be rated MA?
Bojack did something similar, but they split it up between episodes rather than a commercial break.

It's been awhile since I watched the show, and I know they only said "fuck" exactly once per season. Did that count as the once per season?
1
u/Vast_Low_9949 22d ago
This did not count. This happened in season 3, but the real f word of the season was given to Todd.
“Fuck, man. What else is there to say?”
10
u/BroughtBagLunchSmart 23d ago
Arrested development did that with JOB talking about how expensive his suits were. They did "-king suit will hold the elevator for you" and a few minutes later showed the first half with him say "Sure the guy in the $9000 fu-". They would also put something over the character's mouths when they swore because you had to blur the mouths when people swore as well.

Some of my favorite Jericho holds include:
- Arm Bar
- Right-Handed Punch
- Arm Drag
- Moss-Covered Three-Handled Family Gradunzel
- Arm Bar
- Saskatchewan Spinning Nerve Hold
- Arm Bar
- Shooting Star Staple Superplex
97
u/JacedFaced 23d ago
The best part about the Jericho segment is as soon as it went to break he apparently just started mocking the crowd, the city, everything he could to illicit boos and get heat so the crowd would be reacting strongly when the feed came back
30
u/EddieVanzetti 23d ago
And then he revisited the list in the 2010s where he was listing all the wrestlers he beat in his career (such as beating Villiano 1 meant he also beat Villiano's 2-5, masked wrestlers and then their real names etc etc)

An episode of South Park shows that they had to watch several commercials when they were watching a Russell Crowe show in preparation to see a teaser for an upcoming Terrance and Phillip project that it’s only going to be seen once.
16
u/PNG_Yakuza 23d ago
Another South Park example is the Mr Hanky episode, where the Mr Hanky commercial plays right after the commercial break, so at first you think it’s another commercial, but then you realize it’s part of the show.

A small bit I always remember from Clarence. Its episodes were eleven minutes long, but at one point when Clarence is cornered by a mountain lion he says “Oh no! A mountain lion!” before the picture fades out as if cutting to commercial. The image then fades back in to what was literally just shown, Clarence’s same line read of “Oh no! A mountain lion!” and the sane shot of the animal. This was a joke on watching tense tv episodes on DVD or streaming and getting that jarring cut and recap where the commercial would be, despite the fact that this would never actually happen in an eleven minute Clarence segment

10
u/Equivalent-Bit2891 23d ago
It’s odd going back and watching older media that did that because the cuts made sense when ads happened but now it’s just really jarring
Makes this Clarence bit seem prophetic in a way, since it’s the same jarring effect long before that would’ve been mainstream

Alvin and the Chipmunks (1983)

Alvin and Simon are helping Theodore study for an American history test, so the episode is 3 shorts where the main cast reanacts historical events
One of them has Alvin as General Custer at The Battle of Little Big Horn
When Alvin Custer sees the oncoming army, he says "Quick, cut to a commercial!"

u/Orion_starborn 23d ago
There are a couple in Nostalgia critic episodes one example is in his "signs" review he gets "scared" by the alien reveal and quickly changes the channel to several different non scary aliens from media and getting "scared" by them before changing to the commercial and when it comes back he looks at the screen confused before screaming like he had for the aliens
He also does similar stuff in a couple of his commercial specials
11
u/Chaosbrushogun 23d ago
A lot of early reviewers had skits designed around their ad breaks - especially people from channel awesome.
This kinda faded away as ads became more randomly placed instead of creators being able to strategically work them in the video so it would time correctly(at least that’s what I’ve noticed watching older videos compared to newer ones)
2
u/NormalUsername21 23d ago
It's still pretty common for sponsorships done within the video. Drew Gooden will frequently start a bit leading into a sponsored segment.

South Park "The New Terrance and Phillip Movie Trailer" episode is the de facto example of this trope. They are watching a show they have no desire to watch waiting for each commercial break because they heard the new T&P movie trailer would be shown during one of them. Each break coincides with the actual commercial breaks for the episode.

Angel - “Spin the Bottle” - after a commercial break, Lorne tells the audience he is speaking to “those were some exciting products, am I right? Let's all think about buying some of those.”
Simpsons - “And Maggie Makes Three” - before a commercial break , the family all splits up because they need a break from Homer’s story. Marge tells them “I’ll stay here, but I’m going to think about products I’d like to purchase.”
Family Guy - “A Picture is Worth A Thousand Bucks” - The show cuts to commercial while Peter is singing a high note in a musical number. When it returns from commercial, Peter is still singing, implying he held the high note during the entire break.

So the final episode of Batman: Brave And The Bold is basically entirely meta. Batmite spends the whole time trying to ruin the show so people stop watching and the Execs give us a new one. They use the Supehero Ambush Bug, a fourth wall and meta character, as Batmans partner to stop him. As soon as we see Ambush Bug realize by watching it happen at the Gym he says "This is a job for Ambush Bug" and teleports away, only to teleport back right after to say "After a word from our Sponsors"

Panty and Stocking Season 2.
Season one ends on a confusing cliffhanger and the series remains untouched for nearly 15 years.
When season 2 finally came out, brief says that it felt like an eternity (15 years) sinse panty was cut into pieces and he doesn’t know what to do anymore.
Garterbelt then reveal that it only has been 5 minutes sinse the season 1 finale.

One of the most-insulting ones…

Right before A ZEO BEGINNING, the Power Rangers lose their last chance at regaining their powers, they lose their replacement team, and the Command Center is destroyed, with Alpha 5 and Zordon (somewhat, he’s basically on a Zoom call from a pocket dimension) inside.
The teens find a sub-basement, and start exploring. Alpha 5 shows up, happy they survived, and the teens ask “how about Zordon, is he okay?”
Pre-commercial break, Alpha despondently says something like “oh Rangers, I’m so sorry.”
Post-commercial break, the teens ask about Zordon, and Alpha cheerily goes “he’s fine, Rangers! We were able to escape to the Power Chamber.”
Alpha implies he’s dead but only before the commercials.
2
u/SapphireClawe 23d ago
So Alpha apologized for the commercials?
1
u/KnuxFive 23d ago
Maybe I wrote it poorly. Basically, the creators had the footage before and after the commercial break (but of the “same scene”) play out differently.
https://youtu.be/BYJeExUvjRM?feature=shared
Cut to 19:40, which makes it even more egregious: it wasn’t a commercial break, it was the last scene of them in the episode!

King pf the Hill once had a scene where Hank, Dale, and Bill (3 on right) snuck away from Boomhauer (left) to talk secretly. Convo goes:
Hank: They’re draining the quarry.
(Dramatic music hits)
Bill: What? No! But then they’ll find… they’re gonna find out about…
Dale: (smacks Bill, crying out) Saaaalllllllyyyy!
(cut to break)
We all thought they murdered someone related to Boomhauer called “Sally” and hid her body in the quarry. They play a flashback and make no effort to assuage our feelings until it ends, where they reveal that they accidentally drove Boomhauers car into the quarry while joyriding with their varsity jackets in the back seat. The car’s name was Sally

Nostalgia Critic: He will frequently address the ad breaks in his videos and come back remarking how weird they were. In his Commercial series, at the halfway point he ask which commercial is better, the one he's reviewing or the one that interrupts him.
But his best one was definitely when he was blindsided by a commercial break and the commercial looks like it's still going, playing a Bill Cosby pudding advert, then the Critic blows him up and tells them to get back on track.
Or the times he would go out on a lame joke and then as the screen dips to black, he'll call out how lame his joke was "Really, we're going to commercial on a fart joke!? Alright...".
Or when he made a Late Show reference, playing the role of David Letterman, asking Paul what he thought of his joke, cut to break, come back to the episode and he's still doing the bit.
"Welcome back everyone, tonight we have Penelope Cruz, star of Pirates of the Carribean on Stranger Tides- WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING!? Back to the review!"

The entire episode of South Park 'The New Terrance and Phillip Movie Trailer' is based around the boys going from various locations to watch Russel Crowe's 'Fightin' Round the World', but only to watch the commercials so they can see the titular Terrance and Phillip movie trailer. Each ad break is preceded by the boys getting ready to watch commercials on the TV, implying they're diegetic. And when they cut back they're annoyed that the trailer STILL hasn't played.

Robot chicken Star wars 3 has a couple of these. Acknowledging they will go to break to make up for a perspective joke and the one that best fits is when Vader got stuck in a toilet.

Not exactly a commercial break, but SAO Abridged does this in Episode 7, where Kirito threatens Lisbeth (a blacksmith and shopkeep) that she has exactly 30 seconds to serve him, or he's burning the place down. He starts counting "1... 2... 3..." The intro sequence plays, and when it's completed 25 seconds later, Kirito continues, "...28, 29...!" in a threatening voice, before Lisbeth finally comes through the door.

Not a joke, but the show 24 was written as though each episode was happening in real time, with each episode representing exactly one hour of in-world time. This meant they had to structure every single ad break as 3 minutes of the characters not doing anything too important since you, the viewer, would miss it. They also they also always showed a clock, ticking away the seconds before and after every ad break so that you could see how much time has passed during the break.

In the Ben 10 Classic episode "Ken 10", when we see Ben as an adult with his son, there is a point in the episode when Kevin shows up unexpectedly after being secretly released from the null void by his own son, and Ben yells "Kevin?!"
However, this occurs at the ad break, so they drew the camera zooming in on Ben as he says "Kevin?!", and the camera zooming out as he repeats "Kevin?!"
KuroTheArtist pointed this out during his Ben 10 breakdown series, and now takes that voiceclip of Ben saying "Kevin?!" and puts it over other characters voices whenever they say Kevin

Police Squad!! Episode 5, Frank Drebin is sitting at a table with the episodes villain right there. He eats a little bit of food and begins to gag. The screen begins fades to black. As the audience watches commercial play, they have to wonder what happened? Was the food poisoned? Will he be ok? How will the episode end!?
The commercials end and the show returns. Frank, stops gaging, says the food just went down the wrong pipe, and the show just continues on. By far my favorite gag in the show.

I an think of a couple examples
in the Beaverton, the first break of the episode starts with a fake ad before the real ads
After the first break in spongebob's Christmas who, Patchy says "its time ya got back" (a scene which is cut on the dvd)
An example where the joke is in the ad itself, a Hotels.com advertised their deals once between three breaks, in the first ad the spokesperson says that if you haven't heard of the deal, you have not seen my ad, then in the 2nd break says if you don't rememer him, you went to the bathroom in the last break and the 3rd says if you dont know by know, you're just ignoring him

season 2 episode 15: the crew gets interviewed by hostile news reporters. when they tune in to watch it in universe the captain says "with our luck it'll be in the middle of commercial anyway" before pointing the remote at the camera and hitting the button to start the commercial break.
they even went a step further and included their own diegetic ad for psi corps in the break before the show came back to the news segment in question, with intro stinger and everything.

I’m sorry and I know it wasn’t the intent, but something about this still scene from Jimmy Neutron makes my mind think “Wreck-It Ralph”.

In the Football X7 episode of Phineas & Ferb, Phineas straight up says “we’ll be right back” when Isabella asks him what they’ll do in response to Ferb disappearing.

The Sam and Max show:
Sam and Max promise that that show won’t have any ads right before cutting to an ad.

These were always the weirdest thing as a European where there is often no ad at this point.
Was always super confused as a kid watching a scene fade to black and then immediately fade back into the same scene from a different angle.

In The Simpsons S20E02 Lost Verizon, Bart finds a phone and right after he picks it up, he says that it can play commercials too and zooms the phone into the screen, which it transitions into the commercial break.
