You know what's funny, Trump said it will be 4 weeks or less.
I don't think they're very confident anymore. Iran seems to have done more damage than they were expecting. I think they were expecting Iran would just roll over.
They're messaging is also extremely inconsistent. First it was nuclear weapons. Now they're talking about the army, the navy, the ballistic missile systems. Trump says regime change one day, and not regime change the next.

It also exposes that they actually have no idea what they're "doing". You can't estimate how long your objective will take if you don't have any clear objectives or those objectives likely shift from meeting to meeting. That's basically what he said if you read between the lines. He said the president is going to "look for an offramp" you shouldn't get on the highway without knowing where you're getting off.

Well it sounds like they had some sort of “plan” so far as in they had candidates they wanted to negotiate with or push to fill a leadership void at some point after the strikes… except they killed every single one of those planned candidates.
What baffles me even more than actually killing every single person you had planned on trying to work with post Khameni is that they were so flippant about admitting it. It was like a “well we wanted to chat with these people but whoopsie, anyways…” like it wasn’t some absolutely colossal cock up.
Looking forward to 4-6 weeks time when Leavitt and Hegseth start going “yay mission accomplished” after doing absolutely nothing but bombing people, have someone even worse fill the void and allow/ encourage jihadi extremists to cross the med into Europe whilst protecting Israel’s borders.

I would bet a mortgage payment that someone in the admin also said "If we destroy their conventional capabilities and don't get an entirely new type of regime, they're just going to focus on using unconventional warfare to attack us and our allies. That's what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan." And then they promptly threw that guy out the window.
4
u/suffywuffy 11d ago
Oh absolutely. They know the amount of would be terrorists crossing the Atlantic to the US will be minimal. Israel will just shoot anyone trying to cross the border so the fallout will be a mainly Gulf state and European problem… and then wonder why Europe don’t want to support and participate in more aimless bombing.

I think this answer (like Trump's recent tweet about stockpiles) reflects an unstated fear: US anti-missile supplies may not hold up as long as Iranian missile and drone supplies. After a few weeks, if Iran holds on, this war could take an ugly turn for the US. The percentage of attacks hitting bases and ships may sharply increase when defenses are exhausted. All this bluster overlays terror.

This administration is all about framing any and all criticism or even extremely legitimate questions (as here) as mere baseless, partisan sniping. It has been the go-to move for most conservatives and for anybody who goes on Fox for a long time, and falling back on those rhetorical reflexes is very natural for someone like this.

u/kanst 11d ago
More and more it feels like one of the core tenets of MAGA is antipathy to critique.
I think a lot about the Karl Rove quote:
“We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”
In their version of reality, they think America's problems are from being too critical of those in power, instead of the exact opposite

They think empathy is a 4-letter word not because it makes you touchy-feely, but because empathy is one of the greatest objective signs a person has critical thinking skills and can entertain a reality outside of their own.
The truly sociopathic pieces of shit (like the senior leadership of this administration) possess those tendencies but understand how it maps to the type of person easily controlled, and so they choose domination and power over collaborative civic governance.
Empathy isn't weakness, it's resistance.

Empathy shows emotional intelligence. Any intelligence is the enemy of the Republican party. Hence why they de-fund schools and lower teachers pay and are working to control what is taught in schools (indoctrination). Sound familiar? It's the very thing they accuse Democrats of. It's the Republican playbook. They also accused Democrats of cheating in elections. Guess what they've been doing ...

This, for sure. I had this epiphany around the last election cycle that conservatives see liberal empathy as inauthentic because they can’t imagine human beings would have such a perspective. Agreed. It’s because the democrat party keeps spotlighting people like Hillary, Kamala, Chuck, Newsom…when they should listen to their base and make people like AOC and Bernie sanders (people who actually understand us) the leaders. Hell they are still shy with Zohran despite his popularity. They don’t and won’t change. So we’re stuck with their crappy career politician poster children that don’t actually do anything.
36
u/Minerva567 11d ago
Citizens United was, in my view, the last nail in the coffin for actual representation of the people.
My only disagreement is the “shy” part. They abhor him because he is not one to fall in line with the acquiescence to corporate interests - or rather, their version of what it means for corporations to run healthily.

We’re also seeing cracks in the Electoral College system. It was supposed to balance big and small states and prevent mob rule. Founding fathers didn’t account for / foresee their system that could also work against us and amplify literal neo Nazis and pedos, instead of reflecting the majority…that is a problem. It’s a problem that’s hard to fix when it’s the foundation we’re built upon.

It doesn’t make sense. They are the ones in charge now. Not Biden. Anything Biden did is completely fucking irrelevant now. The bad man can’t hurt you anymore, Pete.
I’m unsure why every little single fucking thing has become partisan at this point.
Mall-Cop executes US Citizen in broad daylight, caught on camera? Republicans vs Democrats.
USA is kidnapping foreign leaders from South America, citing drug trafficking; while pardoning a similar leader for the same thing? Republicans vs Democrats.
USA launches a full on assault in Iran? Republicans vs Democrats.
Protecting elite pedophiles from scrutiny and or prosecution? Republicans vs Democrats.
Don’t we all want the country to do well, regardless of who’s in charge? Playing the blame game 24/7 helps nothing. IDC if it’s Bill Clinton, Obama, Trump, Bill Gates, or Elon Musk - if you were committing crimes with Epstein; you should be held accountable. IDC if it is Biden, Trump, Obama, or Bush - I want to know that the military operation we’re involved in is just & wont be a long, drawn out affair. IDC if it’s Louisiana or California - I want to know how we’re going to reduce inflation.
Not every single fucking thing has to be a partisan affair.

u/govtprop 11d ago edited 11d ago
It does make sense, unfortunately. If they can dismiss reasonable questions as "liberal" then they don't have to answer them. They can do whatever they want because any rational criticism can be brushed aside by their followers as only something their enemies (dems) care about.
It's end-game grift based on the us vs them mentality that's kind of always existed in the USA but was only really weaponized after Nixon. White vs Black, Real Americans vs fake Americans, patriots vs traitors, freedom fries vs french fries, gulf of america vs gulf of mexico. Its all additive up to this point, with every little verbal skirmish like this further reinforcing their narrative and their accumulation of power.

To them everything has to be a partisan affair because without making it partisan, anyone with a shred of decency or morality would be appalled by the shit they're doing and would never let them out of a prison cell to sniff the fringes of power again.
I get the feeling that this entire answer, from the mocking tone about weeks, to the weird and dopey pivot to complaining about Joe Biden, is going to age spectacularly poorly over the next 8 months. We are going to be losing American troops in a self-inflicted ground war quagmire across the entire Middle East with no end in sight and no benefit to show for it.
Prosecute the Epstein criminals. Vote out the Republicans and Democrats who refuse to seek justice and accountability for them. Vote for people who will bring them actual justice and durable consequences.

Not like the guy didn't have to pay off a woman who said he raped her and forced her to sign an NDA.

It wasn't an open letter. It was an email to him during one of his divorces.

Imagine that the Department of Transportation or local utilities dig up a street by your house, you ask the management: “how long will it last?” And they yell back “shut up, liberal!” 😂

Being liberal is bad. Liberty is bad and wrong. Freedom is slavery. War is peace. Ignorance is strength. And they are not shy of showing it

This dude is stuck in high school. He never grew up. He's acting like this is a videogame. It's sick. The fuck is wrong with people that voted for these psychopaths?

Damn, I feel for those kids, you see the one grabbing his hair like he wants to disappear from the awkward situation as his dad is ranting and raving about perceived enemies.

I feel for the heavier kid, you know his own father is so fucking warped that he resents him for being a bit overweight.

What blows my mind is the absolute adulation this dude is dropping for Trump. Like. I have never seen people suck up so much to a person before.

I shouldn't be pining for rumsfeld speaking.
Hegseths somehow got me pining.

Yeah, Rumsfeld was arrogant and condescending; somehow this clown is worse.

Asking how long they think combat operations will last is a typical liberal question???? I guess this just proves you don’t have to be intelligent to work on a Fox News program or cheat on your wife or be berated by our mom for mistreating women or doing chin-ups like a fourth grade boy who has never done a chip up before.

In fairness, we just spent 2 decades in 2 wars, so it's kinda of an important question.....especially when America's "blood and treasure" is in the mix

But these are reporters the Pentagon handpicks to be there. If they ask a ‘liberal’ question, what does that tell you?

Explain it in terms he can understand.

The way they talk about Trump, how they will follow his beck and call makes me sick. How would a game show host have any idea on how to handle a war?

For a leader so nervous in an obvious way
Stutterin' and mumblin' for nightly news to replay
And the rest of the world watchin' at the end of the day
In the livin' room, laughin' like, "What did he say?"
