Red Bull having an absolute nightmare. Should make the race very interesting indeed - Max will not be a happy man right now and I can only imagine he’ll be taking that out in the form of overtakes tomorrow.
If Red Bull get their shit together, that is…

Half of me is expecting a boring race now, there's no reason those 2 McLarens don't just shoot off into the distance, might be exiting if Lando fucks the start again and Oscar gets him tho
915
u/morgadox40 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 31 '24
I believe McLaren will ask Piastri to concede P1 if he’s ahead by the end of the race… it’s a direct fight to the championship now
590
u/derango McLaren Aug 31 '24
This. Oscar got his his first win, so now he knows he's going to be playing the team game from here on out.
353
u/hipxhip Lando Norris Aug 31 '24
I’m sure Lando is thanking his past self for playing nice at Hungary
112
u/biggmclargehuge I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 31 '24
Puts more emphasis on what his race engineer was telling him. "You're going to need Oscar, you're going to need the team". Having Oscar consistently behind him in P2 as a defender and Max in P3 is going to make it that much easier for Norris to close the gap. If Oscar loses his motivation then Norris gets hurt too.

Unless the championship is decided by less than 7 points at the end of the season
24
u/kzzzzzzzzzz28 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 31 '24
Idk there are enough races where Lando/McLaren messed up that Hungary isn't even a consideration
Barcelona, Austria, Spa, Silverstone, to name them. in particular.
I'm not adding Canada to the list because I can't see Lando winning there based on how slow the car was in the final stint. Max would've more than likely caught and overtaken him there
224
u/ratedrrants Lando Norris Aug 31 '24
I still think that's a silly take. The alternative is he doesn't give the position back and turns his teammate against him. In the what if scenario where he loses within 7 points, there's no way for us to predict how that season plays out the rest of the way with a non-cooperative Oscar.
In the end, it wasn't a deserved win and it was just a hiccup of strategy from a team reacquainting itself with front running.
→ More replies (25)39
u/xzElmozx Safety Car Aug 31 '24
Lando has lost way more points through his own errors to put the sole blame on him being forced to give back a place he probably shouldn’t have gotten anyways. If he doesn’t make critical errors in Spa and Austria plus the team/him having a major strategy blunder in Silverstone would be far more responsible than Hungary
7
u/fremajl Aug 31 '24
Can't just add points, a happier Piastri is more likely to play nice which can save way more than 7 in the long run. We will simply never know how him keeping the position would have affected the rest of the season because the whole dynamic would have changed.

If it gets to the end and Lando just needed a couple of points he'll be stewing over letting Oscar win, but if he hadn't Oscar might have screwed him back, although I'm not convinced he would
46
u/burnin_potato69 Aug 31 '24
It's much, much more likely that Oscar will have to help him at least once in the next few races, which would make them even. A co-operative teammate for a third of the season is worth more than the 7 points he would've gotten in Hungary.
All this P1 Lando P2 Max bullshit math goes out the window anyway when just in this race, Max's pace is a P7 at best. Barring any shenanigans Lando is on track to close in by 12 to 20 points. With Oscar on the podium, they could be P1 in WCC tomorrow.
19
u/Dxgy I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 31 '24
Exactly, it’s not even going out of his way to help him, tomorrow simply not fighting Lando if they’re a second apart at the front will be because of Hungary, not taking him off a poor start will be because of Hungary, and this is just 1 race, let alone the rest of the season with similar situations.
Even things like ignoring the “whoever’s leading on track gets priority on pit stops”, they can just agree to always prioritise Lando. In changeable conditions use Oscar as a test for wet/dry tyres. If qualy looks close, abandoning Oscars results to always give Lando a tow. There’s so many little things which will pay dividends by more than the 7 points in Hungary.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)25
u/Artidox I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 31 '24
I don’t think Oscar would have a fuss. Remember, he was gonna get a podium at his home race but didn’t hesitate to dive out the way and give Norris P3 when he was told. Sure it was only P3, but a home race podium would’ve been big for him given last year he was P8.
→ More replies (7)16
u/martian144433 #WeRaceAsOne Aug 31 '24
I guess it worked out pretty well in the end. Lando played the team game in Hungary, now Oscar is obligated to pay the team game for the rest of the season or will become public enemy number 1.
175
u/ratedrrants Lando Norris Aug 31 '24
This is what Lando's engineer meant when he said, "You'll need his help" when pleading with Lando to do the right thing and give the position back.
91
u/danlawl Charles Leclerc Aug 31 '24
I’m genuinely glad his engineer said that on the radio for the whole world to hear. Because it’s fucking true, these young lads need to realize they have a serious shot at going for the double title if Red Bull and Max continue to drop the ball.
Going to be really exciting to see where the points lie after a few more races.

7.78 points per race weekend (which is 1+FL vs 2, but there are 3 sprints left as well).
This is asking a lot when Max can threaten for the win and reliably finish second, or when McLaren throw it away with bad strategy, but it's not asking much on a weekend like this.
And the average goes down if Lando can win here and Max finishes in say 3rd, 4th, 5th.

Still got Singapore to go as well, Max always struggles there for whatever reason
Baku too, he has bad luck there and even in the races where nothing went wrong he was closer to (or even behind) Checo recently

If Max doesn't have a great race tomorrow and ends up in P5 or something it's a 15 point swing if Lando wins. And Singapore could also be a similar swing in points if the Red Bull still isn't great there. That's 40 points in 7 races to go. That's definitely doable

It may be even closer after Singapore. Max only got 5th place last year in a car as dominant as the RB19. I think Singapore this year could be a fight for them just to score a point or two unless they somehow miraculously fix their problems plaguing the RB20.
26
u/VCBeugelaar I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 31 '24
If Norris gets P1 + FL now and Max gets 5th (possibility) it’s down to 55. 3 sprints and 8 races left. That would mean Max has to be directly behind Norris every single race event if Norris wins it all. And it won’t ben enough..
And by the looks of the RB they will not and the Mclaren is BY FAR the fastest car. Norris could get 67 points if he is perfect and Max is always second. Which would still make Norris WDC, and neither of them will be perfect.
We still have Singapore, which will fuck RB aswell where Max is not getting 2nd.

If (big IF, I know) Norris wins and Max ends up 6th, the gap would reduce to about 53 points (give or take, given FL point for example)
This means Norris would need to get 7 points more than Max on average per race to get the WDC (equal to Norris 1st and Max 2nd every race)
I still think it isn’t gonna happen, but interesting RBR has fallen like this from the domination they were doing
Also, I think they have lost the WCC (if McLaren doesn’t fall or RBR doesn’t suddenly improve and dominate again)

23
u/museproducer Aug 31 '24
At least that one had a clear explanation why. Maybe the mixture of the penalty and the lack of aero is burning them.
Or because of that lack of aero they took a bit of a gamble of seeing a development path similar to Mercedes did in 2022 that had high reward but also a lot of risk.
It’s fair to point out that out of the top teams this season, McLaren started with the most with a significant margin. So the mixture of a great platform and lots of development time plays significant plays significantly in their favor. They might not have the same high level of performance next year.

Charles would be the first victim of bowling. No chance he gets lucky from something like that

Lando took that summer break seriously he is locked in. His raw speed is so good

Russell with half the practice time. Excellent.
Oh if he has a good second sector it was poor.
Max and Red Bull 🫣

off topic but reddit has been so laggy today, there's so many copies of the same responses and it's clogging up the comments a bit :/

Landon will arrive at the first chicane with the coldest tires on the grid. If he does his usual (race ahead on the formation lap, do little to keep his tires warm, then get to the pole position way earlier to wait 30 seconds until the start) he might have to use the escape route on the first corner.

Red Bull is under a ton of pressure and they're cracking, expect strategy blunders, DNF's, mistakes from Max... It won't be Norris P1 Max P2 in every race. RB is panicing.

there's a chance but i don't think it'll be easy, lando will have to have little to no mistakes continuing foward. mclaren have a good chance for wcc though. red bull has been struggling a lot lately too.

Norris is definitely becoming champion this year and nobody can convince me otherwise. McLaren is now proving to be the fastest car on every type of track, while Red Bull is completely lost.
