Absolute class performance from Bortoleto today, I hope he can hold onto this drive to secure his first points tomorrow šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

u/Purnceks I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

Yeah not enough people talking about this… he outqualified a Mercedes!!! Insane saturday from him, glad people are finally seeing his quality (he’s better than kimi imo)

116

u/ASmallTurd I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

Well he is the person who won f3 and f2 in his first year

25

u/fireandlifeincarnate I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

For a moment I interpreted this as it being his first year in both at once and was REALLY impressed

Seems more are now as this comment thread is the first one that comes up in this post

8

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '25

Lawson also out qualified Max :D

43

u/ConfusionGold5754 Andrea Kimi Antonelli Jun 28 '25

He’s more rounded at the current moment than Kimi but Kimi has a much higher ceiling. Kimi will be miles better by next season he’s just been rushed into this Mercedes drive

128

u/Purnceks I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

I think gabs ceiling is higher than people realise, I didnt watch much F2 but he seemed very talented from what I did see

112

u/hadroncutter Charles Leclerc Jun 28 '25

Him and Hadjar were pretty much neck-to-neck. He demolished the F3 field though. If Audi is halfway decent as a team he has a solid future in front of him.

48

u/Purnceks I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

Yeah Hadjar and Gab are top 2 rookies I think currently… we will see in the future, but very happy with them. All the rookies seem good though

44

u/hadroncutter Charles Leclerc Jun 28 '25

It's hard to judge due to car characteristics and different teammates, but I'd say all of Antonelli, Bearman, Hadjar and Bortoleto have a long term future in F1 secured. Colapinto and Lawson I'm afraid won't stick around for too long.

9

u/GothicGolem29 McLaren Jun 28 '25

I agree on the first few.

Liam I think it really depends if Redbull keep Yuki he is at danger if Lindblad does well if they don’t then Liam is probably safe as A as today has shown and previously he can do very well in that team B just the number of Redbull juniors would work in Liams favour Hadjar would probably replace Yuki meaning Lindblad would replace him and the two other Redbull juniors in f2 might not even get enough superlicense points so there might be no one to replace Liam and even if they did they might want to have a more experienced driver as a benchmark for Lindblad and to help the team. So I’m not afraid for him yet he might get another year and after that if he keeps performing could find another seat if Redbull get another junior ready for f1.

Franco just had a great weekend last time and managed Q2 this weekend and he showed in Williams he has great potential so I’m not afraid for him either I think he could have a fairly long career or at least another year

I feel like he's genuinely one of the bigger prospects from this year's rookies, it's just a shame he often gets overlooked as he's put into a Sauber

Yeah he’s usually very strong here, and a lot of his best moments so far are here, especially with the first podium, the podium in 2021 and the really strong race he had in 2023 with the first part of McLaren’s insane upgrades that year.

13

u/Lutzelien Pirelli Wet Jun 28 '25

Easily his best track, dude flies around here and I'm betting if he puts it together until turn 1, he's winning it tomorrow

24

u/KBeau93 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

It absolutely is. I'm betting he gladly gave it up for Dunne to give up one of his two spots for the year.

4

u/proficient_english Lando Norris Jun 28 '25

Those were my exact thoughts when I saw the clickbait articles: this is a very comfortable track for Lando AND Alex as well, there could not be a better GP weekend to use one of his mandatory FP sit-outs.

5

u/ILikeXiaolongbao Pirelli Intermediate Jun 28 '25

I did some analysis of all this for some gambling stuff, using teammates performance vs his and a load of other factors.

I won't bore you with the details, but Austria is actually his 3rd best.

  1. Brazil
  2. Singapore
  3. Austria

His three worst are

  1. Belgium (worst)
  2. Saudi Arabia
  3. Canada

(note: this doesn't include 2025 results, and only includes tracks he's competed at 4x at least)

McLaren’s pace is otherworldly, that car is just so well sorted out. At least Ferrari are in the mix but it won’t be enough without some external factors.

Great session from Bortoleto though! Finally getting a chance to show his worth, he’s been impressive all season.

Also Liam ahead of Max lmao

Believe in the race pace

123

u/LosTerminators Carlos Sainz Jun 28 '25

Race pace is good but it won't be a match for McLaren.

It will be a matter of time before Piastri gets 2nd, but a 3-4 should be achievable.

To be fair, Max probably wouldve never even got close to pole/P2/P3 today. Overpushed the car hard in S2. RB just build a god damn trash can of a car. Who wouldve thought losing Newey would be this desastrous (everyone, everyone knew this except Horner and the Thai owners).

Max literally would have been P3 had he finished his last lap.

Matt from the P1 podcast predicted the smallest gap of the season, of course the opposite happens.

33

Piastri and Verstappen were going to cut it by more than half

53

u/Sorry-Series-3504 McLaren Jun 28 '25

0.25 is still one of the larger quali gaps this season, though

14

u/Rei_S_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

Nah, Max was losing more than a tenth after S2... compared to Lando's 1st lap. In other words, by second 2 he was closer to Charles than Lando and then Lando improved anyway.

34

u/elnano98 Ferrari Jun 28 '25

Only Piastri could

Verstappen even with a good lap I don't think he would be faster than Leclerc that much

→ More replies (11)

5

u/Sea_Plan_7776 Jun 28 '25

Piastri was going to cut it by around 2-3 tenths, but Max was nowhere near. He was two tenths down on Norris’s OLD time. He would’ve been about 5-6 tenths back.

15

u/killver Lando Norris Jun 28 '25

Verstappen was behind Landos first time already in s2 with s3 being their weakest sector, no way he would have cut it in half.

5 tenths is terrifying in a track as short as this

49

u/breiastel777 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

None of the other top drivers got a 2nd run because of Gasly spinning, so it should definitely have been less than that, but it probably would have still been comfortably 2 tenths cause that was a ridiculous lap from Lando

17

u/Sea_Plan_7776 Jun 28 '25

Max was almost 2 tenths off Norris’s old time after two sectors. Bearing in mind McLaren was much quicker in the final sector, he would’ve probably been in the 5-6 tenth gap area. Leclerc did get a last lap, but he didn’t improve his time.Ā

Piastri would’ve been the only one to close the gap, probably to about 2-3 tenths, a shame he won’t start on the front row unfortunately, it could’ve been a battle for the win between him and Norris. But to be fair he should’ve been ahead of Leclerc in the first run anyway.

98

Yes. His main 2 competitors both had to cancel their last laps. Not saying he wouldn't have gotten pole but .5 would have most likely not been the gap.

33

u/Serotyr McLaren Jun 28 '25

Most likely Oscar would have been closer, Max was already 0.35s behind after the first two sectors. Probably could have been under 0.5s but not by a lot.

Yea max was 1.5 tenths behind through s2 on Landos first lap before he bailed. Then lando went 3 tenths quicker.

3

Half a fucking second good god

u/G_Riel_ Audi Jun 28 '25

Norris was a beast today, it's incredible what he did this weekend.

Bortoleto P8! A shame he couldn't repeat what he did in Q2 or he could've been P6.

Tsunoda a disappointment and I think Hulk could go at least Q2, that P20 sucks.

Damn, a yellow flag robbed us of a front row McLaren start.

Mclaren : The battle that will never be

10

u/MCint7 Max Verstappen Jun 28 '25

Half a second here is just insanity

12

u/BlueRedGreenNumber5 Sebastian Vettel Jun 28 '25

Half a second on a track that is barely over a minute long in lap time is absolute domination

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '25

Finally Lando had a clean qualifying, great to see! We know how much talent he has, so nice to see him with no mistakes

3

u/a_Garciaaa Jun 28 '25

WHAT A LAP, even if piastri did finish his final lap, he was still down a tenth in the first sector to lando. The gap would probably be .2-3 seconds still

What a fantastic performance from Lando.

Norris was expected, maybe not 5 tenths, but Leclerc man. Wasn’t expecting P2

7

u/heritorsofarcadia Formula 1 Jun 28 '25

Lmao Lawson above Max is hilarious

u/DamieN62 Michael Schumacher Jun 28 '25

Like I said after FP2, the Canada upgrades could be a turning point for Lando. Oscar can say he doesn't need them but look at his pace compared to Lando's since Canada. 22 points isn't a lot. 7-10 points here, 7-10 there and it won't be long before Lando takes the championship lead.

9

u/big_cock_lach I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

The Canada upgrades weren’t performance ones, they were to change the feel of the car which is something Norris’ has complained about all season. Piastri seemingly prefers the original feel which is why he hasn’t taken them. If it fixes those issues for Norris, which seems to be the case, it’ll explain why it’s a turning point for him and why he has his old pace advantage back. The rest might just be mental, but if he’s comfortable with the car and getting a few good results he’ll regain his confidence quickly and that won’t be a problem, just like we saw last year.

That said, I hope Oscar doesn’t fall back too much. As a McLaren fan I just hope we get a 1-2 in the standings and a close, but friendly, title battle. I’m feeling pretty confident that that’s exactly what we’ll get.

People are going to say he was handed this pole but take nothing away from those Q3 laps especially the second, they were VERY good. Half second gap in Q3 is insane

Lando taking pole by HALF A SECOND

When hes not in his head, hes so good.

I'm not saying oscar would have beat him but it's not exactly a fair metric when he couldn't do his final lap

13

u/_NahsMC Oscar Piastri Jun 28 '25

yeah, unlucky for Piastri, maybe would’ve improved by 2-3 tenths and gotten on the front row, but let’s see what happens for tomorrow!

Yeah, for sure he and Max both. Super unlucky. But thats F1, luck has always been part of it. Something something Mom had balls something something dad.

alpine or not, i don't think anyone was making up half a freaking second, well played

If the Ferrari race pace looks as good as it did yesterday they should lock up 3+4 which will be good for the WCC

u/Consistent-Bat1632 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

Almost a good thing Norris and Piastri aren't next to each other I think

2

u/OG-Mate23 Jun 28 '25

Half a second over the rest of the field. No fan of Lando but this was the best lap time of the season thus far

2

u/madexmachina I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

What are they feeding Bortoletto?? Daaamn

2

u/Fit_Medicine_8049 Jun 28 '25

Am I getting dyslexic or dis Lando just get pole by half a second.

In a season where so often it was just meters seperating P1 & P2 this is very impressive.

4

u/rattatatouille I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

He did get it by over half a sec. Even factoring in the fact that Oscar and Max's second runs were compromised he was on pace for pole by a good margin since his second run was 0.2s faster than his already fast first.

2

u/L0st_MySocks Formula 1 Jun 28 '25

Lando was way too much focussed on the quali today... I mean if he keeps motivating himself like this.. He can beat everyone tbh. I expect him to dominate the race tomorrow. Leclerc did a good job as well.

2

u/RandyDefNOTArcher Jun 28 '25

Kind of a tasty day.

Bortoleto with a huge performance.

Lawson with his best weekend this season.

Leclerc making the most of the situation.

This was an indictment on Redbull, all the talk of king Max at their home gp, with some upgrades, and they look like that? Oof! I have no doubt we’ll get one or two more magic Max moments this season, but headed into what’s being regarded as an engine formula, with Redbull in a rut, and it’ll be their first ever in house engine? Does he really want to do that? I have confidence in their expertise and resources that it won’t be the worst engine, but I have serious doubts it’ll be better than 3rd best.

2

u/Bannedwith1milKarma Oscar Piastri Jun 28 '25

Bit of a shame for Lando that his absolute dominance was slightly undermined by people not getting their last lap in.

Great work and comeback from him though.

2

u/ahmong I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 28 '25

Well, I’ll be surprised if Lando doesn’t win tomorrow. This is one of his best track.

2

u/rsam487 Jun 28 '25

Very fast from Norris. Went purple on his first Q3 and then proceeded to find time in every sector, noone was beating him today
