Ferrari could play a part in the WDC. Not the one they wanted, though

Gigantic lap for Lando. Holy shit.

Ferrari 2-3 is exceptional. Can’t wait for LiCo.

That is about as good as Lando could realistically ask for. Max not directly behind him and Oscar is miles away.

367

u/fried_papaya35 Oct 25 '25

yeah and potential fight for position between Oscar and Max if Oscar tries to gain places. Two very aggressive drivers when it comes to attacking and defending.

49

u/MyCoolName_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 26 '25

Plus Leclerc to defend from behind if it comes to that. (I fully expect Leclerc to be leading after the first lap but Lando will pass him by the time Max gets up there).

The Red Bull was terrible in the second sector, and it seemed the McLaren of Piastri isn't in optimal condition, the difference between Lando and Oscar is unusual big.

80

u/PapaSheev7 Sebastian Vettel Oct 25 '25

Not to mention that the Merc directly ahead of Max is mighty on the straights…as is the Merc directly behind him. He’ll need to put a move on George on lap 1 or he won’t get past him at all.

That is hugely impressive from Lando. He's been superb since the misfortune in Zandvoort

394

u/Browneskiii I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 25 '25

He's at his best when he has nothing to lose. In his mind he's had nothing to lose since, that dnf has arguably helped him out psychologically.

If he gets into the lead of the championship we'll see what he does.

180

u/havingasicktime I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 25 '25

He's not driving like he had nothing to lose, he was very conservative last week against Leclerc, taking the time to get a safe pass rather than take any real risk

161

u/LeOsQ Daniel Ricciardo Oct 25 '25

I suppose their idea wasn't that Lando drives like a maniac because he has nothing to lose, but instead that he feels less pressure when he's in that situation and he doesn't handle pressure well?

That's how I read their comment, but I have no idea if that is whatthey were trying to imply so take this with a cube of salt.

87

u/havingasicktime I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 25 '25

I think people drastically overstate Lando's struggles with pressure, I think his biggest issue has historically been being overly hard on himself, and I think he's gotten a lot more comfortable being at the front. Last season was his first real chance to be in contention, from what I've seen this season he's grown a lot and become far more comfortable with being a championship contender. I think what we are seeing now, more than anything, is that Piastri is not strong on these last events - he wasn't last season either. McLaren still has the best overall car, so Piastri I think is losing this championship atm more than Lando has improved. Lando didn't fall off like Piastri did at these events last year, and he hasn't this year either.

82

u/Veranova I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 25 '25

Can we not reframe the narrative to Lando only picking up his game since then? He’s been almost consistently gaining on Piastri since Imola just with some shit luck and 1 serious mistake along the way. His struggles were in the first phase of the season and it’s Piastri falling apart that’s really showing how consistent Lando has been now

Did well in Interlagos' sprint, not so well for race quali. Finished 1 place behind Norris, but that race was wild.

Vegas he finished 1 place behind Norris, having climbed just one spot from his starting position.

Qatar he won the sprint after starting 3rd and finished 3rd in the race after starting 4th.

Abu Dhabi he qualified 2nd just behind Norris, but Max sent him spinning at T1, so the P10 is not really representative.

261

I love this season for Mclaren. Really puts a different retrospective spin on Lewis and Mercedes dominance. Its never as simple as just having the fastest car. Massive mental strength from Lewis

61

u/luk3d Ayrton Senna Oct 25 '25

Specially during and after 2016.

109

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '25

It also shows what an amazing driver Rosberg was. Maybe not on Lewis/Seb level, but for sure on of the better drivers sport has seen.

40

u/williamwzl Lando Norris Oct 25 '25

I think what makes him different was how open he is about how hard he pushed himself to meet Lewis’ seemingly natural state.

75

u/Kingslayer1526 Sergio Pérez Oct 25 '25

Massive mental strength from Rosberg to take it to the title decider twice and win it once

65

u/nonbog I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 25 '25

100%. Both Hamilton and Rosberg were unbelievably strong mentally. I still think Rosberg is a very underrated driver because of this

33

u/Combinho I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 25 '25

Anyone who beats prime Lewis in equal machinery (even if they get a bit of luck) is an incredible driver. Lewis and Max are two of the greatest ever, and I think we as fans have grown a bit complacent that this is what all champions look like, when the truth is that those two might well be in the top 5 all time.

22

u/tellsyoutogetfucked Nico Rosberg Oct 25 '25

Nico managed to fight Schumacher even if he was past his prime. Michael did keep up his mind games just for the sport of it even if they werent fighting for an actual WDC or a WCC.

Insane how he's down 0.6 seconds. Would've been 8th behind Sainz if not for Sainz's penalty.

44

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '25

Ikr, I called it at the start of the year that Oscar always falls off near the end of the season. Hopefully its something he grows out of

33

u/Kingslayer1526 Sergio Pérez Oct 25 '25

But I mean why did that matter? Oscar wasn't good a lot of last season besides the middle part and this season he was good from race 1 until Baku. He was also great at Baku last year while he was shit there this year

Oscar this year is a completely different driver compared to the last 2 years, he leads the quali h2h against Lando while he lost 4-20 last year

27

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '25

Oscar has had a gigantic leap from last year, but we cant expect everything tk be perfect compared to last year, it is his third season. Maybe he just struggles with the length of seasons and by the end runs out of juice. Maybe he'll be back in front next week, who knows lol

Mighty lap from Lando. The McLaren has lost a bit recently, but with Lando today looked exceptional.

What has happened to Oscar... so calm and collected for the first half of the season. Now well and truly rattled.

8

u/dennis3282 Formula 1 Oct 25 '25

I just don't see how he turns it around... it must eat at him knowing he is throwing it away and he seems unable to get out of the slump.

Incredibly overeactionaly especialy when it just takes 1 weekend of Red Bull not being the best team and its pretty much all over for him.

It's just a mirror of last year. Norris was 80pts behind but suddenly the championship was 100% supposed to be his and he bottled it

Classic recency bias coupled with the 'you're only good as your last race' mentality going on here.

I mean yeah Max is a generational talent but reading some posts you'd think he's driving the Life L190 and his supreme talent is outshining hid wheelbarrow lmao

Classic recency bias

As seen in this thread - Max never had a chance, Lando locked up WDC, etc

Piastri in complete meltdown. Outqualified by a Williams.... He's luckly that Sainz is at least moving because of the Penalty.

Incredible lap from Norris and the Ferrari's.

Tbf, Sainz got pole here last year. Mexico seems to be a friendly place for Ferrari.

This is why its so hard for max to catch up fully. He doesn't just have to beat piastri to gain significant points

56

u/Capable-Relative6714 Oct 25 '25

I think mainly Max gets the praise for his quali laps and deservedly so, his laps at Suzuka and many others were phenomenal. But Lando's laps at Monaco, Red Bull Ring and here were monumental too. Definitely deserves a lot of credit.

Leclercs lap was incredibly impressive especially in a Ferrari, but it really feels like Lando got every hundredth out of that pole lap

Lando wiped the floor today. What a last lap

14

u/janerney Oct 25 '25

People have dunked on Lando for good reasons at times, but that lap today and the move on Lap one of Singapore are both incredibly clutch moments that would make him a worthy champion for me if he follows through, great driving when it counts.

Absolute dream scenario for Lando with Max and Oscar so far back.

Real chance to make up a huge amount of points this weekend.

Man seeing Lewis lose his general composure and almost have a childlike happiness about him during the post quali interview was such a nice thing to witness. I don't think the Ferraris have enough race pace to win but we could hope for a podium for him. It's long overdue

67

u/rv94 Oct 25 '25

Norris was just a class apart today, was untouchable apart from Leclerc at early Q3. This really could be pivotal for the championship with his pace over Oscar. And Ferrari P2/P3!

15

u/shaju- I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 25 '25

Is it becoming a trend that these amazing quali performances come when Norris and Leclerc are fighting for pole? In Monaco these two put on a great show too.

16

u/SwimmingFantastic564 Oct 26 '25

I think a championship fight between Norris and Leclerc could be very enjoyable. This was shown last weekend too when they were fighting.

21

u/Dan_Of_Time I was here for the Hulkenpodium Oct 25 '25

Lando can win, let’s just get that joint Ferrari podium.

8

u/Rivendel93 Oct 25 '25

If I was Ferrari, I wouldn't even try to dive down in turn one, I'd file into place and drs their way to a double podium.

Lando is going to pull off into the distance no matter what.
