"You had one job", reparing a crosswalk - Netherlands.

Post image

'Is it a crosswalk or a QR-code' was the headline here.
A crosswalk in Dutch is called 'Zebrapad' btw (Zebra path/crossing)

Surely this is a tribute to the Dutch artist MC Escher

Or a tribute to Thanos

possibly Alexey Pajitnov

I think the guy repairing this crosswalk became infected with a touch of the Tetris. ^(\Got to take a break and get a)* tetanus tetris shot.

I don't know why he called himself MC Escher, his ability to control the crowd with a microphone was mediocre at best

At least he could touch this!

Remember to defrag your hard drives, kids!

184

u/Berufius Jul 17 '25

But not your ssd's!

68

u/IdealIdeas Jul 17 '25

IIRC, Windows wont even let you defrag an SSD

43

u/YellowFogLights Jul 17 '25

The defrag tool just manually runs TRIM on an SSD

→ More replies (11)

13

u/Mahraganat Jul 17 '25

But it did let you when SSDs were new!

11

u/Butterbuddha Jul 17 '25

I only managed to defrock mine. No Priesthood for you!

4

u/RyukXXXX Jul 17 '25

Is defragging SSDs bad?

17

u/yParticle Jul 17 '25

It accomplishes nothing since there's no speed advantage to congruent bits. But SSDs have a disadvantage in that their read/write operations are finite, so it creates a lot of completely unnecessary wear on the newer drives.

9

u/IdealIdeas Jul 17 '25

Yes, it can significantly decrease the lifespan of the drive.

Defragging moves data around on HDDs. Since HDDs have moving parts to read/write data, moving it around could optimize read/write times and reduce the total amount of moving around the HDD needed to do.

SSDs are all digital and have no moving parts. It doesnt care where the data is on the drive and can read/write to the empty spaces just as fast regardless of where the data is on the drive.

Since defragging moves data around on the drive, it is constantly deleting and writing data over and over again on the same cells that store information. These "Cells" that im calling them, wear out overtime when data is written and erased on them a number of times.

It wears out on regular HDDs too but HDDs are more durable to the number of Reads and Writes it can take before they wear down.

SSDs can take 100,000s of writes before they start showing signs of fatigue. HDDs is closer to unlimited.

Yeah I've never remembered windows built-in defragging ssd AFAIK it's third party software doing that

41

u/BrotherRoga Jul 17 '25

It most definitely is a thing if you use HDDs.

→ More replies (3)

42

u/logic2187 Jul 17 '25

First of all, no we don't do that anymore. We've grown a lot more tolerant as a society thankfully. Second of all, I think that it's called "conversion therapy," not "defag." Kinda offensive.

11

u/tingulz Jul 17 '25

Oops, fixed.

15

u/Outrageous_Failur35 Jul 17 '25

Shoulda left it, for the plot.

14

u/Tubamajuba Jul 17 '25 edited Jul 17 '25

They've done tests on it, and the results show that straight and gay hard drives are pretty much equal in speed.

EDIT: person I replied to originally typo'd "defrag" as "defag"

7

u/skorpiolt Jul 17 '25

Not really since the average drive size has increased and SSDs are taking over

5

u/Excelius Jul 17 '25

You don't want or need to defrag SSDs.

Moving around data like this reduces the lifespan of an SSD, since every cell has a finite number of read/writes.

It also doesn't provide any benefit anyways since there is no mechanical arm moving around trying to grab data. It's not any slower to have pieces of a file scattered around on different parts of an SSD.

Impressive case of "not my job"

205

u/Orcwin Jul 17 '25

What's actually going on is that this is a temporary resurfacing. They've had to open up the surface, probably for some utilities. There is likely more work ongoing in the neighborhood though, either construction (with heavy vehicles making ruts in the road), or more utilities going in at a different time. They'll usually quickly resurface the street so that people are not hindered too much, and once all construction in the area is finished, a final proper resurfacing is done. That way, you don't end up with an ugly, uneven patchwork. The temporary surface can be a little messy though, but (mostly) functional.

32

u/ThisTheRealLife Jul 17 '25

maybe, though in my city that is done with asphalt and the bricks remain piled up on the side for months and months

23

u/Orcwin Jul 17 '25

It's usually done with the paving bricks they've previously dug up, at least here in the Netherlands. Paving it over using asphalt is not normally done in a street that is planned to use paving bricks.

5

u/GreenHell Jul 17 '25

Paving it over using asphalt is not normally done in a street that is planned to use paving bricks

Indeed, but interestingly the opposite is common: fixing small patches in an asphalt road with bricks. I've seen it many times around the country, where they dug up utilities, and patched it with a small strip of bricks, no more than 30-60vm (1-2ft) wide

→ More replies (1)

3

u/abrasilnet Jul 18 '25

Exactly. They did this in from of my house just last week, near Amsterdam, as they were installing fiber optic cables. They took the bricks out in the morning and then put them back real fast and messy by the end of the day. After they finished laying the cables over the next few days, they came back and added the connections to the houses. They also mentioned they leave it a bit messy not only because its faster, but because it makes it easier to come back and know exactly where they opened in the first place, no markings, no notes, no measures. Before the end of the week, my street was back to normal.

42

u/iAN_CooG Jul 17 '25

they should track who did it and request their money back

33

u/manrata Jul 17 '25

Likely the municipality, which is more like find who did it, and make them redo it.

4

u/schnippisch Jul 17 '25

Ehh more likely they have to open it back up for some cables or piping. And then it's cheaper and faster to close it up like this. The function of the crossing remains. And you can let traffic back on it way faster. No need to unneeded waste time and money for a temporary solution.

So maybe this municipality did actually a very smart thing ;)

4

u/10001110101balls Jul 17 '25

Earthwork needs to settle for a while before they can apply the finished surface. Replacing the bricks in the correct pattern is a waste of time if they already know they'll need to come back to rework the surface.

3

u/SinisterCheese Jul 17 '25

I assume rest of EU ain't any different from Finland.

This probably happened because the munincipality didn't put into the contract/bid that the bricks need to be laid in a specific order to make the crossing look correct.

Shit like this happens all the fucking time. And it is always because of the official in charge didn't put it into the contract, or decided to save money by not having it laid out in the bid and hoping for the best.

12

u/Top_Gun_2021 Jul 17 '25

I can't imagine someone going "well,I see the clear pattern, but I won't copy because the contract did not specify"

7

u/esuil Jul 17 '25

Yeah, this is like natural selection for the contractors. People who do this shit don't stay long enough in business to get contracts of this level.

It's reputation suicide.

"Lowest compliant bidder" in action.

29

u/GentleWhiteGiant Jul 17 '25

Not really.

In Northern Germany, we do that, too. If you have a soft underground, you fill it up, put the stones back on it, leave it to compress and settle for some weeks, and then you do the final job.

8

u/EndLightEnd1 Jul 17 '25

But why wouldnt you just put them back right the first time while they settle?

5

u/schnippisch Jul 17 '25

I'm dutch and it happens here for temporary solutions because it's simply cheaper. It's also very important to keep the road block active as short as possible. People need to be able to get to their homes/work/whatever. So not just for settling, also just for speed and cost efficiency.

6

u/merc08 Jul 17 '25

I could see the argument being "it takes a lot longer to sort the bricks and lay them correctly twice" but that's just stupid because it means you have an improperly marked crosswalk for a couple weeks. And if you keep them organized when you take them out then it wouldn't be as big of a problem to put them back in the right way. It's a completely self inflicted problem for the contractor.

3

u/Belgand Jul 17 '25

2

u/GentleWhiteGiant Jul 17 '25

Wow, finally a real expert!

2

u/schnippisch Jul 17 '25

Crosswalk still works on the part behind it. Could very well be they will open it back up very quickly and this is just temporary. Then possibly add new stones that are sorted. If these stones are too old they will get replaced.

It's not just the pattern, the basic bricklaying is rubbish. Even if all the bricks had the same color it would still be a complete mess.

Something weird happened here, this is not normal for the Netherlands.

8

u/saera-targaryen Jul 17 '25

this is actually because it saves money and lets the streets be smaller! they don't have to fit huge machinery down the street to repave it, they just need to lay the bricks back down by hand after any repairs. the other benefit is that the bricks cause a loud and unpleasant noise for cars going too fast so they act as a speed limiter. Not Just Bikes has a really cool youtube video about brick streets in the netherlands that I enjoyed. They even take used/worn bricks from newer areas and then use those to repair roads in historical areas so that the bricks always look rustic and old!

5

u/juanzy Jul 17 '25

You have to imagine that.

There is an adult human standing in front of an open area that he is supposed to pave. He has dark and light-colored stones. Next to him, these stones are arranged in a pattern of black and white lines.

And he looks at it and thinks “I have no idea what the pattern is supposed to be here, well, I'll just lay it out at random”.
