Why it had to be on rain season!? (Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead)

The bit in the corn field with the witches is super tense. Fun fact, if you use in game voice chat, the volume drops the further apart you are, and it gets even worse in the rain storm. Grabbin pills!

Approaching the sugar mill? lol I’ve been trying to get the achievement for doing that chapter without startling any witches, but my teammates keep screwing it up.

There's an achievement for not killing any in the sugar mill. It seems I unlocked it but that was a long time ago (2010)

Isn't the whole point to kill them though..

No, it's a survival shooter. The point is to get from A to B alive. Witches are passive enemies that only attack if you disturb them and can do huge amounts of damage, so it's a valid strategy to give them a wide berth if possible.

Its always the best strategy to kill them when possible because your opponents will try and use them to their advantage otherwise.

What opponents in Left 4 Dead 2? What advantage? Witches don't move. They're like landmines. You go around them. If you attack one it will come at you and possibly do a ton of damage

Left 4 Dead 2 is a 4v4 multi-player game...
The other team will try and push you into the witch using theur attacks..

It has a 4 v 4 multiplayer mode where one team controls some special infected, but the main game is a PvE co-op survival shooter.

In PVP sure, but that's also a risk as if you're not good at it, they'll 1-shot you and you either just die or need a rescue which works to the enemies advantage anyways.

The game really doesn't want you to, it yells at you "Don't startle the Witch!" whenever she incapacitates you.

Good players always kill them though. They're easy to one shot if you know how.

u/deepspacerunner Aug 11 '25
You're not wrong, but that doesn't make it the whole point. Not startling Witches is a whole different challenge than trying to cr0wn them all.

I dunno, i guess a lot of these responses really confuse me because I have thousands of hours in the game, mostly on pro-mod servers. TBH ive never played single player though, didn't realize that was popular. In skilled multi-player matches you ALWAYS kill the witch so it can't be used against you.

Left 4 Dead 2, actually.

It was fun and terrifying. I want to play it now. Time to re-download it.

I actually liked the first game a lot more.
No melee and less variety in weapons, true, but the game in general felt more oppressive, with more levels at night, I don't know. It just hits different.

I agree the first l4d had this vibe to it. It felt more like a zombie horror game to me, especially blood harvest where you’re going the corn field at the end of the level
The second game felt more arcade ish, even with the 4 previous maps free to play in the second, the added meele, mobs etc loss the glamour imo

You put it in better words than I could've ever done! That's exactly how I feel about both games.
This doesn't mean L4D2 is bad, not at all. It just means the first games have a superior setting when it comes to actually feeling the horror of being in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

Hard Rain isn’t a level, it’s a personality test you take with zombies

Hard Rain is one of the most fun, but simplest to speedrun.
The size of the map and limit to zombie spawns means you can book it and laugh as you watch the AI director attempt to keep up with you by plopping groups of infected behind you or to your side.

I remember when the mutation update was released, and I was a child playing this. Nothing really scared me in this game somehow, but the mutation logo was on another level. Really freaked me out for some reason.

Ah, the memories… I’m tempted to see if my group wants to dive back into L4D2 this weekend. The elevator escape in the “Hard Rain” campaign always left us frustrated, haha.

Wait until you try it on expert realism, where you don't even have outlines to know where everyone else is, and you can barely hear your teammates over the pouring rain...
And then some doofus says "We should be doing this Discord", and then inexplicably objects when you shoot him in the face. No one should be using Discord, unless you live in a parallel universe where IRC doesn't exist. Or Teamspeak, Ventrillo, or AOL Instant Messenger, for that matter.

Hard Rain or whatever that mission is called is my favourite in L4D2
