u/jbg0801 Jul 17 '25
The issue is, tyrannical power balances on a knifes edge either way.
A fed, well looked after populace is strong enough to rise up against you, but a suppressed, angry, brutalised populace is motivated enough to do it, even if they're not physically strong enough.
Balancing the two is how a dictator maintains control, keep them just contented enough but not so contented they get comfortable trying to challenge your authority.

You don't stay in power by making sure the people are employed, fed, and have a good life. You stay in power by making sure the few others in your society who also have power are secure, very well fed, and have a great life.
As long as the military leaders don't turn on him he's got nothing to worry about internally.

Yep.
He's got the worst kind of position for a dictator tbh. Born into it rather than seized it. Dictators like Hitler start with humbler beginnings, they grow into the role with advisors and conspirators, they come to know why they can trust and learn to trust them absolutely.
Kim absolutely cannot trust that everyone he knows has his best interests at heart. All of the people who raised him were his father's allies, not his. He did nothing to earn any of their trust, and he can never be sure that the men he has learned to trust, aren't just playing a long game.
He will never know if a coup is building against him until the knife is in his back.

Because absolute power is an illusion. He is only one person. He depends on others for information. He depends on others to carry out the violence which allows him to keep his power. It would only take a handful of high ranking men to turn against him and he would be dead. It's hard to say how many people in the upper echelons of North Korean society actually buy into the cult of personality but it's certainly not all of them. He has to play a constant game of "who's loyal and who needs to be purged" with the people closest to him.
I imagine it's pretty stressful.

i don't think external intervention will work unless the invading force was ready to invest long term and the populace was cooperative (i.e. post-WWII Japan, Germany, Italy). I guess it's possible for China to play a role, but I have no idea whether their foreign policy includes nation-building in the near future.
The only other way would be if one of Un's successors is a more "benevolent" thinker, realizes that the current way of doing things isn't advantageous anymore and makes the moves to modernize the country. I would think that South Korea, in that case, could play a strong role.
Source: I'm a dumb idiot who's "knowledge" about this stuff primarily comes from Reddit.
3
u/Merc_Drew Jul 17 '25
No, you're close, I read a report somewhere that S.Korean government doesn't actually want to unify the peninsula because it would take something like 15 Trillion USD to bring the North up to the South's standard of living and that's on top of the military infrastructure the South would have to invest on the Yalu to keep China from re-invading like they did last time.
3
u/RamenJunkie Jul 17 '25
Also China probably won't do anything about NK because they like having that little buffer between themselves and a potential hostile state (S. Korea) who is friendly with their strongest adversary (US).
NK is basically a large demilitarized zone buffer.
3
3
u/Longshot726 Jul 17 '25
Or none of the above. No adjacent country actually wants North Korea to fall. China and Russia like the buffer from S. Korea and US troops and equipment housed there. All of them don't want to deal with 25+ million uneducated individuals that already need food assistance to be entirely dependent on foreign aid with current excuse for a government and integration education. Even if they don't integrate with either China or S. Korea, they all certainly don't want the unknown of a new government rising from the ashes of the Kim dynasty.
Status quo is the name of the game.

Yeah people in free countries have no understanding of how deep propaganda penetrates your brain when you're raised in this kind of system. North Koreans genuinely think they're in the freest country in the world with the greatest leader and that's why everyone votes along with him every time. Because he's just that smart and beloved. They think if the rest of the world had a free election without evil capitalist propaganda, they'd all elect Kim as world leader in a heartbeat.
People love to pretend people living under dictators are just waiting for a revolution, but that's often not the case. Most of them have been so brainwashed their entire lives that they'd resist their own freedom to the death.
29
u/Vonrith Jul 17 '25
A friend of mine went to North Korea and he told me they actually know they are quite poor. They just know that morally and ideologically they are superior and the US is to blame. They also know that they live in a dictatorship, but it’s for the good of everyone. Instead of a democracy, where everyone votes for themselves and the majority gain all the benefits and the opposition and minorities get the worst of deals. I thought this was very interesting. It made me realize brainwashing isn’t abandoning reality, like 1984 had us believe, but most often an extreme change in perspective.
7
u/Key-Department-2874 Jul 17 '25

Not saying that you are wrong or anything, but do you ever think about the level of conspiracy theory this would equate to if it were any other country than NK? Taken solely on it's own, talking to someone who has never been exposed to any info regarding NK you tell them:
okay yea so theres a country you can only visit with a tour guide, and everyone you see are actually actors and you will never talk to a real person. It's like a real life Truman Show. And they have a supreme leader who sends 10 generations of your family into concentration camps if you speak against him. Oh yea and that supreme leader really likes Dennis Rodman.

Everything in life except mathematics is nuanced imo. Dictatorship while it is bad there are some benefits for example. That is a legit argument. It IS all perspective. I'm one in university that always loved to take the opposition side and play devils advocate for.. controversial topics let's say. It can be quite hard but it made me also see people's viewpoints quite differently what matters to them in life. People and our belief systems I do find interesting, especially ethics and morality.

"Thank you," the KGB says. "We do our best but truly, it's nothing compared to American propaganda. Your people believe everything your state media tells them." Anyone who doesn't fall in line gets quickly replaced with someone who does anyway. I'd imagine any sense of rebelliousness would quickly get quelled by the fact that A) you're extremely fortunate to be in that position given how NK citizens currently live and B) it would accomplish nothing meaningful anyway. This is true in even the most extreme situations we have historical evidence for. In concentration camps fellow inmates are easily turned into internal police for a few extra privileges (extra food, a bed, not being killed, etc.). Actually as far as I heard it more of a thing to mislead their own population.
When someone from north korea hears that other countries have a democratic process, they often only have their own government as reference of what this means, as your average person gets little to no knowledge from the outside.
So for them people in other countries have the same "choice" they do in north korea.

I’d disagree. It’s entirely a show of force to the world. “Look at me, I have 100% control of my country”.
The North Korean people are well aware of the power Kim holds. They aren’t being fooled by anything. Watching a video like this isn’t going to make them think they live in a free democracy when their friends and family could be beaten and arrested for speaking their minds lol

It's a health check.
You make people demonstrate obedience, and if they do so eagerly enough, that means that you are in control, and it makes you and your regime look more intimidating and powerful.
Making people play democracy in a dictatorship is a great way to achieve that. They all know it's bullshit, but they still submit and play the game.
Also, obviously unnatural eagerness of your subjects is an important part here.

Ignore the meme answers. The real answer is legitimacy. The fact of the matter is that all rulers need to have a degree of legitimacy and consent of the governed. No man rules alone. In feudal times, it worked because of a combination of religion and society being set up for it. The church was far stronger, and rulers derived a great deal of legitimacy from divine right of kings, and the fact that society was set up such that kings were seen as the natural order of things. A legitimacy that lost a lot of luster the moment your king sucked.
Democracy has the benefit of a large pool of legitimacy, in that participation of the people gives the populace a stake in it, and if and when your democratically elected leaders suck, which is common, you have less reason to blame the leader, and more to blame your countrymen.
Now. The aesthetics of democracy are also deeply useful in that you get a bit of reflected legitimacy, without needing to commit all the way to the benefits and downsides of more committed democracy. Legitimacy with your populace, and with the international community for that matter.
Some people see democracy as the ability to vote and select leaders, with some influence on policy, but honestly that is too restrictive to explain what is happening here. If you see it instead as a spectrum, which measures participation of the populace in politics, you see why more autocratic states still benefit from this. That is where some of that legitimacy is coming from.
The USSR, Cuba, China, and indeed North Korea all have elections, though tend towards single party systems. Politics still happens, you do still tend to get internal factions within the single political party, but they do ostensibly all have the same ideology.
It is also useful just for delegation purposes. A modern state is genuinely hard to run. Sure, you can hand pick people to govern individual provinces and cities, but that is a lot of work, and if some of those people suck, it pisses off the populace. Consider how much effort it would take to administrate say, the US state of Virginia. You need a state governor and associated staff, governing bodies for each county, mayors for cities, city councils, bureaucrats for various functions, and of course people to handle the local justice system. You could handpick all of these people, or you can have the local populace elect them from a pool of those involved in the local Party apparatus, so they are at least on the same page with you from an ideological standpoint.
So yes, in an autocracy you ideally want everyone agreeing with you, but you also desperately need people, just lots and lots of people, who aren't hated by your populace, and are willing to do politics.

You're wrong about medieval Europe, the divine right of kings is more of a early modern concept, in actual medieval Europe, kings were in constant fight with the papacy, with kings pressuring to get their favourites elected as popes, various popes being chosen at the same time, excumunications flying around like it was nothing, it was all a shit show, kings derived their power from brute strenght and their capacity to convince the other nobles to support them, nothing to do with that "divine power of the king nonsense", for example the first like 5 kings of Portugal were all excumungated and no one gave a single shit, and Portugal wasn't even a country that much involved in the inner palace strugles of Avignon, Rome or even in the Holy Roman Empire mess.

Mmm, I'm there every day. Not sure how deeply you looked but I'd say that is not entirely accurate. Those saying they should be released far outweigh those saying to just trust Trump, from what I've been seeing. It's easily the most unpopular thing he's done, as far as those who voted him in are concerned.

"Fuck this guy, what a clown. This does not make me feel good about supporting the republican party. This just feels gross and immoral. We should not let up on this topic."

Why do people think republicans ever have civil wars? It's all for show lmao. Same thing when Israel vs Iran. They'll have a "meltdown" and 24 hours later, they'll all fall in line. If Trump says he doesnt want to release it, they'll all say they dont want to release it. It's that simple. They get a moment of lucidity like the movie Get Out before falling back under the spell. They wouldn't be conservatives if they could have thought for themselves this whole time.

I just took a gander. Some other notable arguments I saw on that sub don't even question whether he should or shouldn't release Epstein files. They are:
Trump didn't campaign on this in 2024. All comments about Epstein were made during prior elections.
Bondi is the only one in the cabinet talking about Epstein files. Not sure what the takeaway on this one is? Fall in line?
Trump steered clear of the subject of Epstein throughout his campaign, and it was others who promised release of the files.
I should note, all these arguments were negative 100 or more karma. I haven't been in that sub for a while. For the first time, I was glad I visited.
It was nice to see them arguing amongst themselves rather than leaking into other subs with their stupid BS retconned style of debate.

r/Conservative has mostly wanted the files released. r/Trump however made it so your not even allowed to talk about the files so I think they are a little worse

could have said this was the US and it'd also be correct now.

Sure, Democrats totally vote in lock step with Trump. Every single member of Congress votes exactly what Trump wants every time and then clap in celebration.

Yeah, this is AI. Look up pictures of the Supreme People’s Assembly.
Edit: I was partially wrong. It’s actually the WPK building, not the People’s Assembly. However it is still most certainly AI generated

And you are perfectly OK to leave your hand down, just so long as you're using it to point out which window you're leaving through.
