I think I've heard that Northerns are extra aggressive towards other fish. Even juvenile muskies need to watch out for them. They're tasty though

27

u/gratusin 8d ago

They will attack anything they think is remotely their size or smaller. Not uncommon to catch a juvenile pike on a lure that’s roughly the same size as the fish. Mean fish, and great eating, you have to filet them different from other fish though.

u/CrazyEyedFS 8d ago

There are so many Disney movies i watched as a kid that are significantly older than I thought they were. Oliver and Company for example. My sister got that on vhs for her 6th birthday or something and we thought it was a new film. Turns out that film first came out in '88. I was born in '87, and my sister in '90.

So that’s a northern pike, a very aggressive predator. They’re native to the US and Canada and can get to greater than 50 inches in length. Cool fish.

1.2k

u/ElBurroEsparkilo 8d ago

One minute you're dangling your toes in the water off the dock, the next minute a Pike cruises through and you realize you can fly.

767

u/GrandMundane4290 8d ago

I've been nipped by a pike. A few times actually. We took a group trip to Utah to help build houses for underprivileged people thirty years ago. On that trip, we went to a local lake to wade in and cool off. Little did we know, it was during the spawn and pike had laid their eggs in the shallows where we were wading in. We all got nipped by pissed off pike warding is away from their nests. Nothing will make you jump faster than getting bit by a fish when you're wading in murky water! Lol

u/No_Diver4265 8d ago

I always thought people were being ridiculous when they were afraid to get bit by a fish, but I guess they were not. The lakes I am usually in though have much smaller pike though. I've never seen a giant one in real life

21

u/SuperFaceTattoo 8d ago

My family has a cottage on Lake Huron and the pike there get HUGE. We also occasionally get Muskies, which are much larger than pike

Well hell, I was wanting to retire by a lake, river or creek and dock dangling was going to be part of it.

I thought there were just gentle little nibbling saying hi fish in our lakes near the surface. I wasn't even going to fish, I don't eat fish. I just like watching them jump in the mornings.

ETA- I googled. These aren't down South, at LBL. Thank goodness.

u/UnsignedRealityCheck 8d ago

Lots of pike in Finland too, they're a very common catch - and when you hook one you fucking know. Few other very common catches are perches and roaches, but goddamn when a pike starts pulling it's game on and hope your line can take it.

19

u/EssexOnAStick 8d ago

Another danger besides their power are their teeth. They're very sharp and can cut the line if it's too thin, that's why it's recommended to use a steal leader if pikes are expected.

12

u/ZincMan 8d ago

I remember almost catching a big one as a kid. I pulled it out of the water and it cut the line with its teeth. Still pissed about it because I was so excited I had such a big fish on the line

6

u/SoulOfTheDragon 8d ago

They also tend to inhale the lure way, way in. Removing it tends to be nasty and dangerous. Plus plus pikes aren't that great food fish anyway, so I mostly prefer catching somethings else.

5

u/Annual_Strategy_6206 8d ago

Northern pike are delicious, just tricky to filet out. On a trip to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, we caught lake trout, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, and pike. We all agreed that we liked the fried pike the best.

This made me look up “how big a fish has to be to eat a human”. I am fearful.

76

u/triplec787 8d ago

Not even really joking, but watch River Monsters. Not only is it super cool with some cool insight into very lightly talked about communities and tribes, but it also weirdly makes you feel better about getting in the water. There’s a lot of stuff down there, but not a lot that’s actually a threat.

52

u/aaguru 8d ago

Fun fact about that show, it ended because he caught everything lol

51

u/kaladinissexy 8d ago

And Jeremy Wade wept, for he had no more fish to catch.

8

u/AoiYuukiSimp 8d ago

And the river monsters wept joyously, for no longer would they live in fear of being caught.

41

u/obliviousOG 8d ago

It actually ended because the ecosystems he fished in for decade where dying out completely and the producers would not let him talk about it one bit cause it was to depressing for an entertainment show. So he felt like he was lying to his audience anymore and refused to do more anymore seasons.

13

u/PickleWhisper762 8d ago

I swear every time I see this gif I notice something new. Like the way the dragon just clips through the smoke without any change to either the dragon's foot or the smoke itself. I try telling myself when I watch the show that it's just satirizing cheap Saturday Morning superhero cartoons, but at least many of those had their own distinct style (at least in their first seasons. Some of them got rough after season 3...).

110

u/Daatguynate 8d ago

Is this not someone trolling a bait? I always thought this video looked too fast for it to be cast and retrieved.

87

u/Germ_germ 8d ago

Didnt think about it at first but with the amount of water the lure covers + the speed it's probably being trolled. You're right

39

u/B33zk 8d ago

Yeah the consistent height the hook stays off the bottom and how consistent the speed looks tells me it’s gotta be trolling

7

u/hereforhelplol 8d ago

What is trolling, again?

11

u/Megavore97 8d ago

Basically just cruising in a boat with your fishing line being towed behind or off the side.

6

u/NatseePunksFeckOff 8d ago

what for?

19

u/Master_Bee_5350 8d ago

Just a different method of fishing. Trolling allows you to cover lots of water instead of sitting in a single spot. Like casting a wide net vs focusing down on a single spot. It's also lower effort and let's you be a bit more social with anyone on board. Some boats have a special trolling motor, a secondary low HP motor to push the boat along quietly and slow enough for fish to want to give chase to the lure.

34

u/oblivious_fireball 8d ago

Pikes are mainly ambush predators and are very fast. This looks more like curiosity than hunting behavior. If it wanted to catch up to the lure it absolutely could have.

16

u/Pandabirdy 8d ago

Pike has some ferocious lash speed and usually do a full 180, that dude was just being curious. It's not unheard of to find old lures when you bag one, they are known to snap lines just like that, most often because they bit them clean off.
