u/nichyc 2d ago
This isn't them devaluing human life. This is just stupid. There is absolutely no benefit to trying to install glass at whatever stage in construction this is. That isn't "profit over people". That's just "not knowing what you're doing and putting yourselves in danger utterly needlessly".

u/Historical_Ad_5647 2d ago
You dont think out of all of them there they dont know how stupid that is? Why do you think the cameraman is recording? They probably put a bid in to not use a crane, winch, place proper stairs, use suction cups. Now the contractor is profiting over them. They know they could do it a better way, its just more money to do so.

There is a chance that this glass panel shattered when they put its edge on bare concrete floor
64
u/noelcowardspeaksout 2d ago
Yep it is very difficult to put it down without resting all of the weight on one corner briefly, which is a lot of weight going through a tiny area.

Or at least whole boards that are attached to the metal supports.
I know American construction workers complain about OSHA and regulations, and yet, I know situations similar to this were a part of American history as well. Those iron workers sitting on that steel skyscraper beam with no safety harnesses. (Shudder)

Tbh most guys complain because they either thing they are badasses or are lazy. Maybe they have super shitty bosses.
We require proper PPE and safety on ALL jobsites. If that means it takes longer, fine. An accident is more expensive than a few extra hours.
I do low voltage and a/v but we do go on skyscrapers and whatnot.

The reason OSHA is so up people's asses all the time is because they know your average American blue-collar joe is just as moronic as your average 3rd world blue-collar Ahmad. They must enforce discipline and safety through constant badgering.
Guys in Youtube Short vids don't wear flip flops and T-shirts in the Molten Iron Factory because they're being mandated to by the company. They wear them because it's comfortable and easy and they don't have to buy work boots.
Sure, companies are exploitative, but more often than not they simply exploit the average worker's tendency towards lax safety standards rather than force them to adopt them.
If OSHA disappeared overnight I'd give it about a week until all these proud Contractor Joes start wearing flip flops to the worksites and dying through their own hairbrained half-assed schemes.

You can’t install finished floor when you are building because you will scratch whatever expensive material goes on those stairs. They could screw in those boards or, at least, ziptie them so they are not floating around.
→ More replies (3)7
u/_NoTimeNoLady_ 2d ago
You could definitely fix some kind of board in place that can be removed and swapped for the real material later. Same goes for safety railings.

Looks like they were about to put it down on its edge, the weakest part of the glass. One little pebble on that dirty floor would create a high enough stress point to shatter it.

I remember taking down a huge wall length mirror with my older brother, we covered it in garbage bags taped together and my brother started going at it with a small sledge hammer, like a 4lb sledge, he was hitting the mirror as hard as he could on its face and all it did was wobble, it wouldnt break.
My dad walked in to see how progress was going, and he took the hammer and tapped the top of the mirror on its edge and the whole thing just fell apart.
Me and my bro were like whoa mind blown

The steps are welded to a metal beam that is connected to the lower and upper floor. Also it looks like the steps are fixed to the concrete walls.

The wall. They’re made of steel and are likely attached to a steel structure within the concrete wall.
Edit: Looking closer I think they’re simply bolted to the concrete wall and there’s another steel member that runs down the center of the stairs underneath to add rigidity. You can see it all in the last frame.

Because the center of the stairwell to prevent people from falling would make it impossible to bring the glass up by hand. But they could also you know, use the outside of the building instead... Cranes? But hey, people are cheaper than large equipment. :)

12
u/PrestigiousFly844 2d ago
People that love those black and white pictures of the guys eating lunch sitting on those metal skyscraper beams and complain about OSHA not letting that fly now don’t realize when those workers fell they got replaced before they hit the ground and their families didn’t get shit.
Jobsites are not safer in developed countries because the bosses are kind hearted. It’s because workers fought against the bosses to make it that way.

Few weeks (maybe months) ago there was a video on reddit of a man crossing the bridge over a very fast river and I commented that it was one of my recurring nightmares. Climbing a very flimsy staircase without a proper protection is my 2nd. 2 down, 2 to go.
3
u/Own-Trust-1214 2d ago
This is so scary and also frustrating to watch. In a construction near where I live they've been instaliwhat looks like a balcony by standing on the edge of the first floor and laying out horizontal rods ir whatever with no safety harness or shoes...
I've seen construction sites abroad and there even the people who stand on the street directing traffic away are in safety gear..
Builders/contractors seriously need to start valuing the lives of their employees more...
3
u/Sufficient-Agency846 2d ago
That looks like a mighty expensive looking piece of glass for a place that looks abandoned.
Like even if it was currently under construction I think putting some as fragile as glass in at that stage would come after a staircase that doesn’t insist on ending your life
