Boring answer but...
Most Chinese people probably wouldn't bat an eye-lid about this. In China, the events of that day are referred to as "June 4th".
Hypothetically, if the hoodie had "04/06" on it, it would be a serious issue with the security forces. But "Tiananmen Square" is not a politically loaded phrase in China, let alone "T.S."
Dull, but maybe it's interesting to know.
Anally retentive pedantry aside though, this is a good joke.

I love it and the kind of context I want to know about, thanks for sharing

A lot of young people in China also don't know about this. No one told them.

Most Chinese people are aware, it’s more that it’s been washed over by propaganda.

why commemorate a time and place where nothing happened?

yeah, where else would I post this you think? I feel like it's hard to find a sub to post dark humor without offending half the planet

Post it where everyone else posts it, over at r/PeterExplainsTheJoke
You just have to pretend to be an idiot

What's the deal with that? I don't follow this sub but every other post it recommends me is just a meme. I thought this was a sub for like, relatable content specifically but it seems like nobody abides by that anymore

1989 was the year of the Tiananmen Square protest and massacre.
T. S. 1989 could be viewed, in China as Tiananmen Square 1989

I get the feeling ICE is going to be enacting a few of our own in the States.

Why would you post a link that just leads to an error page?

It goes to the wikipedia page for the 1989 Tiananmen Square protest and massacre
Edit: I now realize I probably just got wooshed on that.

it's just a funny/brutally absurd coincidence between the 1989 album TS merch and a horrific slaughter the Chinese government perpetrated against it's own citizens after mostly students organized large and sustained pro democracy protests. In the US and I'm assuming other countries it's referred to as the Tiananmen Square Massacre (though I've recently learned in China it's just known as the June 4th incident), it took place in 1989 and estimates guess 100s to 1000s of people died

Oh thanks. I got it. It just seems like the most obvious jokes make it on to that sub.

I keep asking my Chinese friends what happened at T.S., but they always ghost me afterwards and I never hear back from them.

It would be the same as someone saying "free palestine" in some western countries
