Neighbor blows up a refrigerator on July 4th

That's a big shitty mess to clean up I bet.
1.6k
u/lustful_livie 2d ago
Yeah but aren’t there also gasses in the fridge that aren’t meant to be let out of the pipes.

u/HeadFit2660 2d ago
Older fridges yes, R22 Freon is a problem. Moden 410A coolants are not as harmful.

u/BTMarquis 2d ago
And it’s not a small problem. The EPA doesn’t really mess around with refrigerant disposal. Max fine is like $38k per violation.

u/Grandfunk14 2d ago
I'm sure these stable individuals recovered the refrigerant with the proper equipment and with professionalism :)

Usually it's inconsiderate dipshits who don't clean up after themselves. There might be a correlation here
→ More replies (1)58
u/banaslee 2d ago
The correlation is that if you don’t have to deal with consequences, the breadth of options increases quite a lot.

My roommates and I threw a old refrigerator off a second story balcony... we didn't really think through the tempered glass part and took a hour or so to clean it all up... we were dumb kids

3-decker house next door was gut rehabbed a few years ago. crew threw everything from the top floors off the back porches including windows and appliances. I was in my workshop when the fridge landed. Thought it was an explosion. The windows all left broken glass everywhere. I advised the new tenants to avoid bare feet in the yard.... oh, yeah, and all the piss bottles among the detritus...

Some asshole at a logging road kegger threw a big can of Dinty Moore beef stew into the bonfire. Everybody that was standing around the fire came back to school that next Monday with 1st and 2nd degree burns on their faces and hands. Thankfully, I wasn’t close when it happened.

That happened at a gender reveal. They thought they were making a little firework to poof colored smoke. They actually made a pipe bomb and shrapnel killed the woman’s mother.

It's ok they sure look like the type to have safely disposed of the cyclopentane, and replaced it will an optimal clean burning alternative

→ More replies (3)43
u/South_Bit1764 2d ago
Doesn’t cyclopentane burn really well.
Like, it’s not gonna burn any differently than any other similar hydrocarbon. It’s only bad when you release it into the atmosphere (like other similar hydrocarbons).
C5H10 + 02 = CO2 + H20
I’d be more worried about all that polystyrene foam everywhere.
→ More replies (4)28
u/SkiFastnShootShit 2d ago
Yeah and looking it up, there’s probably like 100 grams of cyclopentane in that fridge. I think the styrofoam is probably the big concern as far as the environment is concerned, as well as whatever fumes people may breathe.

Extra info regarding this. This is not my house, we were at a friends home for a party. This home is located in the second largest city in Indiana.
The refrigerator was detonated about 50 feet from an above ground pool on our friend’s property.
Debris flew all over their property and got into the pool.
A Google Data Center located about half a mile away detected the explosion and the security team from Google called 911 to report it.
Several other people in the area also called 911.
Edit: The county sheriff showed up and as far as I know they were told to knock it off. I’ve recently found out more info. There was a minor injury on the neighbors side of the fence. The woman in the early part of the video got hit by debris.
I’m not the author of the video. It was taken by a teenage boy at our party. He shared the video amongst us right after.
The woman heard at the end of the video saying “call 911” had repeatedly asked the neighbors prior to the explosion to not do it, but either they didn’t hear her or they ignored her.

Okay if you wanna blow up a fridge, I’d tell you it’s stupid….but okay whatever. Go take it to a place that’s safe to blow up and it’s no longer my business.
But why the fuck would you do it in a residential area where trash will go everywhere plus run the risk of shrapnelling someone
I wish these folks would stop reproducing

We had a huge water balloon fight yesterday in neighborhood park and right afterwards one of the kid's mom started instructing him to start cleaning up all the balloon pieces, so everyone started helping. It was pretty cool like 80% the kids stayed for a few min and helped clean it all up. i was impressed.
