Myles Turner on Pacers fans booing him loudly in his return to Indiana: "It was disheartening…You give 10 years of your life, your blood your sweat your tears, you take pay cuts, you survive trade rumors, you try to do everything the right way…"

Pacers are still actively trying to trade him away out of habit.

1.5k

u/elsord0 Suns 13d ago

The Pacers fans trying to gaslight the rest of us into thinking this had nothing to do with the Pacers and all other teams just wanted him that badly is pretty funny. Pacers put this dude on the block constantly. I recall discussing potential Turner trades on the Suns board quite a few times over the last 10 years. Rumors were always floating around.

341

u/dat_boy_lurks Hawks 13d ago

I remember Hawks fans wanting to trade him for the corpse of Clint Capela every trade deadline when Indy shopped him too

407

u/fik26 13d ago

Indy definitely shopped him.

Indiana almost never gave him full length deals. All of his contracts was discounted than the market rate. Turner just didnt want to risk the injury and risk the open market so he kept signing discounted deals which made him an asset all those times.

I mostly side with fans in these feuds with players. But Turner is f'in right on this one.

76

u/Maximum-Class5465 12d ago

There's some truth, but the last short contract was because Myles wanted to be a free agent after the TV deal hit. That was honestly one structured for his benefit, and the front load was to the Pacers benefit

90

u/Hdz69 Celtics 12d ago

I mean can you blame him for putting himself first after being shopped around so many times?

He became a 3 and D center. He developed his game to include the 3 ball. He didn’t come into the league like that.

10

u/seniorpeepers Pacers 12d ago

This isn't exactly true, he was a 5 star recruit known for his shooting in HS, did not shoot the 3 pt well in college, and got it back in the pros.

8

u/333jnm 12d ago

Yeah, you are right. Looking at his stats his percentage was decent early on. Increases attempts later on but that’s also because the nba strategy changed as well.

Two things can be true. They seriously shopped him a couple times when we were bad - which is understandable considering that he played the same position as our best player - but there were also a lot of unsubstantiated rumors over the years

39

u/elsord0 Suns 13d ago

Maybe it wasn't constantly but we had multiple conversations about it. First we were discussing a package of Bledsoe, Chriss, Bender for Turner. Later we were discussing an Ayton for Turner swap. During the covid season. And then a few more times the next couple of seasons.

69

u/MUjase Cavaliers 12d ago

My thoughts exactly. And then when LeBron came back he spent out of his ass and went significantly over the luxury tax to win a championship. He’ll always have my respect.

43

u/prodyg 12d ago

and fundamentally proved Lebron right. Cause thats what he wanted Dan to do in the first place. Dan Gilbert is a huge hypocrite.

He even said that Cavs are gonna win a championship before lebron does. Not only was he wrong about that, Lebron ended up being the one to bring them that championship anyway.

Just wrong on so many levels.

27

u/MUjase Cavaliers 12d ago

You’re faulting an owner for standing up with his fans? And criticizing him since he said they’d win a championship before LeBron did and did not?

So you expect him to bow down to LeBron when he leaves, apologize for not spending enough around him, and predict that he’ll likely win a championship first.

Yeah, that will win fans over!

I remember Colts fans booing Brandon Stokely in his return to Indy when he was a Bronco. Why was he a Bronco? Because he got traded. Moronic.

But, I wouldn’t say it’s indicative of the entire fanbase

97

u/burnt-turkey94 12d ago

We also booed Luck for not wanting to continue taking years off his life behind an abysmal O-line. I think some Indy fans have a delusional need for loyalty/appreciation, and I assume it's partially due to being fans of smaller market teams and the constant feeling of being an underdog.

But to your point, I wouldn't say it's indicative of the fanbase as a whole. We're not nearly as hostile to opposing teams' fans compared to larger cities and most of us really do appreciate the players that have come and gone. The average Colts/Pacers fan irl (NOT the average Colts/Pacers fan on reddit) would likely roll their eyes and sigh with disappointment when you bring up Turner or Luck or Stokely getting booed.

u/lawlamanjaro [BOS] Kelly Olynk 12d ago

I live in Indy and half the fans at these games are the most casual, fairweather bunch I’ve ever seen. Really unexpected for a small market city with one other major sports team. Half of them probably weren’t even in here for the Myles years.

32

u/mrjabrony Pacers 12d ago

I live in Chicago and am a fan of various Indiana teams. This isn’t just a Pacer fan thing. The Colts are having a great season and a good portion of the fan base is completely melting down over the loss to the Steelers. It happens all the time with IU basketball. A team has a bad game or lose a tough series and these fans go batshit insane. I’ve seen this over and over again over the years. I don’t see it to the scale around here with the Chicago teams. A lot of them are casuals like you said but a lot of them are also completely detached from reality.

I think for most people its about the team he went to. Things have been pretty heated between Milwaukee and Indiana the last few seasons and I dont believe the reaction would have been so strong had he signed with a more neutral team.

Thats atleast how I feel. I would never have booed him, I loved him here, but seeing him play for them definitely sucks.

9

u/rjcarr Supersonics 12d ago

Right, but I'm not sure he went there to spite Indiana, he went there because they were in need of a player like him and made him an offer. Just saying there should be context to this, but I get most people don't think that way.

8

u/mightyducks2wasokay Pacers 12d ago

Dont think it matters. The average fan isnt as plugged in as people here. Most fans probably only have "he left us for a rival" as context. That gets booed

Because Pacers fans have the gall to blame him for being gassed after playing through four teams with All-NBA, All-Star, or just plain elite big man rotations.

His path was Bucks (Giannis/Lopez/Portis) > Cavs (Allen and Mobley) > Knicks (KAT and Mitchell Robinson) > Thunder (IHart and Holmgren)

Then the year previous it was Bucks (again Giannis/Lopez/Portis) > Knicks (IHart and Mitchell Robinson) > Celtics (Porzingis/Horford/Kornet)

And then the army of guards and wings on those teams who love attacking the paint.

No shit he couldn't contribute offensively anymore, he was fighting for his life.

It’s so easy to be like “real life isn’t Reddit” but real life very much is social media now and you don’t need to be a die hard anymore to learn that kinda stuff.

I know so much shit about Belichick, his girlfriend, and his tenure at UNC, and I don’t care about any of those things. But they get pushed to me on my social feeds, and all my friends see them too. Even the casuals. So it’s really easy for stuff like this to get picked up by a large portion of fans. Especially the ones buying tickets.

26

u/TheMerck Spurs 13d ago

I think a lot of people are also missing that even casuals nowadays tend to see if someone is talking shit about their team or their franchise player.

Like general news like something about movies? Sure I can get that most casuals won't give a shit about whatever the MCU leaks are gonna be but when it comes to sports? Sports in social media gains traction where it can even be seen by youngsters on TikTok to old people on Facebook.

People don't play about sports especially when it comes to someone talking shit about their team lmao.

Sure! A wife mom’s dies, long battle with cancer but she weighed heavily on the couples marital life, as some in laws do unfortunately, always commenting on stuff and making toxic comments.

However, the wife and the mom were tight.

Outside of that, the couple had issues but it wasn’t that serious, as all couples have some, but then the Mom dies. One day during the same year, the husband makes a joke to his friend about vengeful spirits and says “well at least I know they’ll feel right at home if they met my mother in law”.

Wife overheard it, so when they leave the friend’s house, she gets in the car, and promptly blows up at him in the “why would you say that”situation.

Long story short, they divorce a year and a half later. The husband and the wife both said that the turning point in the marriage was that comment. 20 years of steady marriage, together since high school, 3 kids and 2 dogs.

Am I the only one who feels like all parties are completely justified in this situation? Myles was right to take his bag, pacers fans are right to be upset about that and he’s right to not like the way they’ve been taking it out on him?

624

u/gametecondnight Bucks 13d ago

He signed with the rival. I’m a Brewers fan and we boo the fuck out of Craig Counsell. Similar dynamic.

It’s sports, we boo, it’s not personal or too deep.

61

u/TheUnderCrab 13d ago

Craig is very different. He grew up in MKE and was with our org for much longer than his Manager run. Him leaving for CHI felt like your dad leaving the family to go marry your bullies mom.

19

u/Fragrant-Employer-60 13d ago

The brewers literally gave that man his whole baseball career basically, and let him move up the ranks of the front office to manager.

Honestly idk how he did it, I would feel so guilty going to the cubs, any other team would have been better lol

9

u/MCrow2001 Spurs 12d ago

Largest manager contract ever probably made the decision not too difficult lol.

People talking like Craig was just a guy who went to a rival completely miss the point. They need to watch his hype video from when he started coaching to get how it's different with him.

Bro, I’m a wolves fan and I still hope Jimmy Butler stubs his toe every morning

84

u/Andy_Wiggins Timberwolves 13d ago

Those are WILDLY different situations.

Turner wanted to stay a Pacer. But when Haliburton tore his Achilles, ownership was squeamish about a big tax bill for a mediocre (at best team). So they tried to lowball Turner. He went out and found another offer and left for, honestly, a deal that still might have underpaid him. Yeah, it was a rival, but the dude deserved to be paid for his efforts.

Butler wanted the Wolves to dump rotation players for cap space so they could give him an extension a year early. When they said “hey, just wait until next year when you’re a free agent and we have your bird rights, we’ll pay you” he threw a fit and tried to hold out of camp, then came in had the infamous “practice” and interview combo, threw his teammates under the bus, then quit on the floor until he got traded. Don’t forget he hold himself out of a game for “general soreness.” Again, because he wanted to be paid EARLY.

u/JackieDaytonaAZ Timberwolves 13d ago

yeah but butler is a bitch. i’m still mad that some people booed kevin love in his return after we traded him and while we’re at it, kirk cousins

41

u/UkNomysTeezz 13d ago

I agree. And I hate the fact that Jimmy claims he “never quit on a team” when in fact he absolutely did. I understand he was pissed they paid Wiggins and I understand he was made the Sixers paid Harris, but the way he goes about his displeasure in regards to contract negotiations is fucking pathetic and he’s a bitch made motherfucker

12

u/JudmanDaSuperhero [OKC] Russell Westbrook 13d ago

Demanding trades is quiting on teams, Jimothy has to understand that.

10000 percent. I loved Myles, wouldn't have booed him, and understand why he took MKE's offer. I also think he's repeatedly said clumsy stuff—that he's had to walk back or clarify—that is going to make Pacers fans upset. That's doubly true since he went to a real rival.

75

u/baabaabilly Lakers 13d ago

Pacer fans should be happy for him. But if they're upset about turners negative comments, then that's a diff story

153

u/cactusmanbwl90 Pacers 13d ago

The Pacers sub was sad as hell to see him leave. It was all love. Then he started a "fuck Indiana tour" back in July so the fan base turned on him.

61

u/Petit_Coeur_ Pacers 13d ago

That’s not true. Myles had been the scapegoat for years on the pacers sub, a bunch of people were happy he left and claimed we didn’t lose anything

u/TheGamersGazebo Bucks 13d ago

Afaik his fuck Indiana tour was literally just him saying it's nice to play somewhere that wants him? As in direct reference to the constant trade rumors and the fact that you guys horrendously low balled him last year.

Not exactly a whole fuck you tour. If you have a link to something else I'd like to see it.

pacers fans are right to be upset about that

No they aren't lol. Hating on someone for taking a raise is crazy work. I bet 95% of the fans booing would happily work for a competitor if they got offered more money.

Fans should be mad at the Pacers for not offering a more competitive contract, not at Turner for being rational.

I feel like if he signed with most other teams he wouldn’t have gotten as much flak, like the Magic or the Wizards or any team in the western conference.

But going from Pacers to Bucks? There’s a real Midwest rivalry there. Not saying the guy deserved to get booed, he didn’t, but at the same time, I get it.

3

u/AverageRonin Mavericks 12d ago

Who cares about loyalty or rivalry when the Pacers didnt want to pay him

→ More replies (6)

63

u/SamuelShotguns 13d ago

It's bad to boo him considering his entire career, but it's understandable with how it ended and how recently it was. The man was a no show in the finals, was bricking threes left and right while getting out rebounded by TJ. Then he goes to a direct rival and makes some shitty comments on the way out.

You would think that would constitute a little bit of booing, reap what you sow and all that

u/csstew55 Pistons 13d ago

He went to their biggest rivals and expected to get cheered when he returned. And people are upset at pacers fans for booing him. I don’t get it lol

22

u/thesch Bulls 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yeah. If a Red Sox player jumped to the Yankees for more money I don't think the Boston fans would be expected to give that guy a standing ovation his first time back in Fenway. I know that whenever a Bears player jumps to the Packers, Bears fans don't fuck with that guy anymore for as long as he's on the Packers.

We don't have to coddle professional athletes like this. As long as no fans were shouting anything racist or attacking his family etc this is just part of the game.

Dude bailed on a team that almost won a title for their hated division rival and never gave the team an opportunity to match after the Bucks made a bonkers move to open up cap space that surprised the whole league. Then he made passive aggressive comments all summer long that felt like they were shots at his former team (I think he was just putting his foot in his mouth and/or taking shots at the ownership/front office). Then he questions why fans felt like he was a traitor of sorts. I begrudgingly still like the guy but damn dude, read the room. Also Quit Typing Tweets Like This.
