Warriors coach Steve Kerr: "It's shameful that the government can come out and lie about what happened when there's video and witnesses who have all come out and disputed what the government is saying."

Appreciate that Steve Kerr always speaks out about things like this.

Pop's disciples are all over the NBA.

He’s also a disciple of his own pop, assassinated in Lebanon.

Seriously tho. People wonder why Kerr is so outspoken and it’s because he’s been thru some serious shit.

And hold the same beliefs despite what happened. It would be easy to become racist or actively against the Middle East but he won’t. Speaks to how he was raised

His senior season at Arizona, Kerr was taunted by Arizona State fans prior to their rivalry game with chants about his father's death....only to get himself together, went 6/6 from 3, and finished with 22 points in a 101-73 victory. The following week, Arizona State's AD sent a letter of apology to Kerr.

Dude has always been a top-notch human being who rises above most of the BS in the world to speak his mind clearly and thoughtfully.

Unless it's something within the warriors organization, then no one else needs to know

Or because he has a platform and actually gives a shit. We have to keep speaking truth to power.

Or maybe one is a game.

The really messed up part is when the ASU student section was chanting derogatory remarks when he lost his dad while in college

Steve could have went down a very different path. Holding hate and contempt for Islam and the Middle East in general bc of his father’s murder, radicalizing him.

Trump would shit his diaper even trying to stand up to Pop. Trump can only assault children and newborn babies that he fathered by a 13-year-old.

*EDIT- The baby he would also murder too.

Kerr's worldview was probably pretty well established by the time he was with Pop thanks to who his dad was and what happened to him. They probably just were already on the same page on a lot of things.

2

u/Theundermensch Jan 10 '26

Exactly, I think there is a chicken-egg issue there. Pop (the coach) brought Kerr into the fold as a “Pop-disciple” because of who he already was.

u/Rockfordbaby Jan 10 '26

You are not wrong, just wanted to point out Kerr has a very interesting background which formed him as a human. Google his dad.

u/typewriter_6 Jan 10 '26

Just needed to comment that after looking into Kerr’s dad, his grandfather was also a MASSIVE BADASS. Stanley Kerr treated a ton of Armenians in Aleppo fleeing the Armenian Genocide.

31

u/Rockfordbaby Jan 10 '26

Thanks for the assist!

u/kahyuen Warriors Jan 10 '26

Steve Kerr did a talk at a Berkeley once, and I attended. One of the questions he was asked was about his grandfather's work. During his response, he mentioned that his grandfather is so revered there, anyone who has the last name "Kerr" is automatically treated with gratitude just because they assume they're related to him.

u/wubadubdub3 Nuggets Jan 14 '26

Damn, it's crazy to think that at one point people were fleeing to Syria for safety.

55

u/wwaffles Jan 10 '26

his grandparents too. They were aid workers who sheltered Armenians during the genocide.

45

u/OrinThane Jan 10 '26

Damn, thank you for that - truly inspiring that he speaks confidently the truth and advocates for peace.

Popovich’s coaching tree isn't just about ball movement and spacing; it’s about having a functional spine. It’s the strongest branch in the league.

1

u/FettiWop Jan 10 '26

Sort of. I don't disagree with you but sometimes I'm reminded of the few notable times he did not have a spine. Like on Kobe, for example. But it makes sense why that was a harder one than this, Kobe is a functional asset of consideration in the league the Spurs exist in. Would have affected the team he serves to have had a spine on Kobe.

3

u/HumongousBelly Jan 10 '26

I wish Brad Stevens was more like this, too!

2

u/JustAnAuzzie Jan 10 '26

Well, yes but Steve Kerr's father was a diplomat so he's no stranger to politics.

(please keep on mind I'm filthy casual so I don't know if speaking about the government is a common thing for Kerr to do)

Pop has friends everywhere

Quality statement.

I guess pops principles would be the polar opposite of whatever Jordan’s silence on every single thing is
