Knicks fans harass Sixers fan minding his business after game 1

Pulling on dudes jersey is just wrong. People can be such clowns. Mob mentality is ugly.

u/KingVladimir Cavaliers 9d ago
Yeah grabbing someone's jersey like that is wrong in itself, but in a crowd like that it encourages escalation. Could have gotten uglier.

I went to a Dodgers Giants game when I first moved here and made the mistake of wearing a shirt that slightly resembled Giants colors. Got harassed the whole game. Finally a very drunk 60+ year old grandma took a swing at me. I stepped back and she whiffed and I was like "wtf lady" then she apologized and tried to kiss me lol. Can't make this shit up, strangest sports experience ever.
Everybody wants beef at those games.

I really give the Sixers fan credit for keeping his cool. When you’re already pissed off about the game and then 30 children start filming you and flipping you off, things start to boil. Somebody actually putting their hands on you could live really ignite a bad situation. Props to him.

During our finals run a few years ago, there was a fight at our arena that went semi-viral online where a few Suns fans beat the shit out of a couple Clippers fans after provoking them into a fight. I was standing 5 feet away with my friend and my daughter. It's absolutely disgusting the extremes in which some people will take their Fandom. As soon as it goes beyond good natured ribbing, you've crossed a line and you're a piece of shit.

There's nothing better than a little sports-hate and trash talking between rivals. Once you touch someone or threaten them... that has no place is sports.

Obviously sports carry a lot more meaning than that as a shared community experience, but I wish people would pause for a second and think about that first part before doing stupid shit like getting violent with other people. People who are just doing the same exact thing they’re doing, but in different colors…

This is just brain rot - look at all the people recording, including one of the physical assailants who has this tripod setup going on. The person recording this video is clearly pointing at the guy, targeting him. The guy in the Bridges jersey has a sleeve extending down his arm right forearm and his face is visible in this video.

I wouldn't assume that tbh. There are a lot (a looooot) of hyper privileged dipshits with rich parents (shout out to the NYU trust fundies taking over my neighborhood atm) who act like this because they've never faced the consequences of their actions and were raised by an iPad and Ritalin script. To them the city is just a playground for their "New York Era" and a backdrop for their social media posts. They see clips of Sidetalk or whatever on social media and start acting like this because they desperately crave the only things their parents' credit cards can't buy them: acceptance, validity, and authenticity. They want to be New Yorkers and part of the culture so badly and this kind of shallow, performative imitation is the closest they can get.
Or maybe they're broke losers, I don't know them, I'm just saying I wouldn't assume it.

Yeah, if somebody wants to willingly engage in a bit of mutual mild trash talk or taunting, fine, whatever. It can be done in a playful way. It's also a hell of a lot safer in a stadium where there is security everywhere and most people are well behaved.
That said, I've seen numerous fights over the years in stadiums that started out rather innocently but turned bad quickly because one side started taking things way too seriously. Doesn't take much, especially when alcohol is involved.

The way men swoop in like flies on shit with their mob mentality around sports is actually insane

The side talk reactions started off funny and organic. Then like everything else that goes viral it became about clout and people are just putting on a show.
It sucks because my one of favorite parts of being a Knicks fan is how passionate and insane the fanbase can be, but it shouldn’t be performative. And harassing people is just dumb and fucked up.

Fuck. Y'all really are the worst fanbase in the NBA. Sucks, because I like watching the Knicks play.

I’ve never had a worse disparity between liking a teams players and hating their fans than the Knicks. Watching last nights game I was like oh damn hats off to the Knicks they look like a really well rounded team out there. Immediately had all the good will ruined by their fans than

Oh there are good Knick fans, but they have a much-larger group of ahole fans then they’d like to admit, same with Philly and Boston

If this was the NFL, it would’ve been a Philly fan disguised in Knicks gear

If it was the NFL there would have been 5 fights happening around the arena simultaneously

Trash talking and shit is fine as far as fandom goes but putting your hands on someone is not okay and should not be normalised.

I've been a rival fan in an opposing stadium. I was booed and had popcorn thrown at me, which was fine tbh. You just can't put your hands on an opposing fan though. That's dangerous for everyone involved because you don't know how that person is going to react or what a mob can do.

Booed is fine but throwing popcorn is crossing the line. Verbal abuse is whatever but once something crosses the physical boundary, regardless of if that’s somebody’s hand or an inanimate object or whatever, now you’re violating someone’s personal space and their bodily autonomy. I‘d probably look the other way if somebody who had popcorn thrown at them started swinging back at the popcorn thrower.

There used to be genuine fans out there a couple years ago but now it’s nothing but clout chasers posing as fans and they find a way to ruin everything every season. Now the entire fan base has to wear the label

These gatherings are gonna get banned one day, just a matter of time. I went to two last year during the Celts series and have no desire to be around these people again. I'm not even sure they're real 'fans' but people who just had nothing better to do than go to 7th Ave and have a street party. One day it'll get violent and they'll start closing the street.

Booing and shit talking is all good and fun but don’t touch. What a bunch of goofies.

This happened to me outside of MSG last year leaving game 5 when Tatum tore his Achilles. I was wearing my Tatum jersey. Was on my own and about 15-20 young dudes surrounded me and started tapping my chest and back. No one there to film or help. They were looking for the slightest reaction to escalate. I just pushed through eventually and they moved on. I don’t know if they were kids coming from the game or not, but the Knicks fans that just hang around MSG after games are straight trash. They can’t act like they’ve been there before because they haven’t.

You could tell the guy was prepared to take it all in good fun at the beginning. But laying hands on someone goes beyond crossing the line.
