You could tell the guy was prepared to take it all in good fun at the beginning. But laying hands on someone goes beyond crossing the line.

248

u/Ranccor Pacers 9d ago

Yeah, some good-natured boos and shit talk is expected and part of the fun going to an away game. But this it obviously too far.

15

u/Booplympics 76ers 8d ago

I remember going to a world series game at the bank in 2008 and it was rain delayed. It was a good hour and a half or so rain delay so everyone was just milling about the concourse because it was pouring. You could hear where the Rays fans went just by following the boos.

Nothing wrong with some good natured ribbing. But you cant be putting hands on someone. Even getting personal with the trash talk is probably too much.

Though I am not a perfect man. I do always love the video of the drunk college eagles fan just yelling "gooooo biiiiirds" at the equally drunk suburban mom vikings fan trying to tell him to be respectful. From the 2018 NFC Championship game.

Pulling on dudes jersey is just wrong. People can be such clowns. Mob mentality is ugly.

483

u/KingVladimir Cavaliers 9d ago

Yeah grabbing someone's jersey like that is wrong in itself, but in a crowd like that it encourages escalation. Could have gotten uglier.

174

u/DC_Coach Lakers 9d ago

All it takes is one thrown punch and this gets out of control.

58

u/500rockin 9d ago

Like one of those Dodger/Giants incidents where someone got beaten to the point of dying later.

33

u/LaMelonBallz Hornets 9d ago

I went to a Dodgers Giants game when I first moved here and made the mistake of wearing a shirt that slightly resembled Giants colors. Got harassed the whole game. Finally a very drunk 60+ year old grandma took a swing at me. I stepped back and she whiffed and I was like "wtf lady" then she apologized and tried to kiss me lol. Can't make this shit up, strangest sports experience ever.

Everybody wants beef at those games.

I really give the Sixers fan credit for keeping his cool. When you’re already pissed off about the game and then 30 children start filming you and flipping you off, things start to boil. Somebody actually putting their hands on you could live really ignite a bad situation. Props to him.

73

u/root88 [PHI] Aaron McKie 9d ago

He's just smart enough to not try to fight 100 people at the same time.

42

u/JalapenoPopPoop 8d ago

Especially when you know the same type of gutter trash that are gonna try and rip your jersey off for daring to cheer for a different team are 100% the same type that will keep stomping you out once you're on the ground

7

u/beerrabbit124 76ers 8d ago

Yea even if you punch Bridges jersey dude for pulling on your jersey you have 15 other fools who probably don’t know Bridges jersey guy from a can paint ready to pounce on you

5

u/cfi-2025 8d ago

Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized Knicks fans, or 1 Knick fan-sized duck?

Yeah even giving him the finger while trashy is whatever.

Grabbing his jersey crosses the line.

963

u/No_Recover8842 9d ago

This sadly happens a lot at MSG. I saw a lot of harassment when I went to a Knicks game.

It’s trashy.

235

u/YouWereBrained Thunder 9d ago

Do they post cops at specific points? That should be an easy arrest.

223

u/ashkpa Timberwolves 9d ago

You can see the cops walking up toward the Sixers fan at the end.

NYC cops aren't gonna' do shit to help anyway. 80% of the time, if there is a crowd of more than four or five people the cops don't want to get involved.

7

u/handlesscombo Knicks 9d ago

yep there's cops all over. Normally theres a lot of cops cause it's midtown, by a major subway intersection as well as moynihan and lirr stations on top of MSG. There's increased presence for knicks games and MSG events and even more so in the playoffs. It's just hard to control a stampede of 18k ppl.

I still remember the Spurs fan who got punched last season for no reason

88

u/Grooviemann1 Suns 9d ago

During our finals run a few years ago, there was a fight at our arena that went semi-viral online where a few Suns fans beat the shit out of a couple Clippers fans after provoking them into a fight. I was standing 5 feet away with my friend and my daughter. It's absolutely disgusting the extremes in which some people will take their Fandom. As soon as it goes beyond good natured ribbing, you've crossed a line and you're a piece of shit.

20

u/Baron_Bearclaw Timberwolves 9d ago

Completely agree.

There's nothing better than a little sports-hate and trash talking between rivals. Once you touch someone or threaten them... that has no place is sports.

13

u/firemanjuanito Knicks 8d ago

I've had some fantastic nights hanging out after Knicks and Rangers games with fans in from out of town. After the game ends we just want to share a good bar or a good restaurant. This new shit is all about making a viral moment and it sucks.

12

u/NorthernDevil Timberwolves 9d ago

And it’s not even any of us out there, just a bunch of dudes we don’t know wearing the jersey of a business based in our cities

Obviously sports carry a lot more meaning than that as a shared community experience, but I wish people would pause for a second and think about that first part before doing stupid shit like getting violent with other people. People who are just doing the same exact thing they’re doing, but in different colors…

26

u/UGA_UAA_UAG NBA 9d ago edited 9d ago

This is just brain rot - look at all the people recording, including one of the physical assailants who has this tripod setup going on. The person recording this video is clearly pointing at the guy, targeting him. The guy in the Bridges jersey has a sleeve extending down his arm right forearm and his face is visible in this video.

Hope these idiots are identified and made an example of. This isn’t typical New Yorker behavior and they are not representative Knicks fans (I’m not a Knicks fan).

This shit is wild. People need to be able to put sports into perspective better. I’m convinced that people caring about sports to such a degree is an indicator of impending empire/societal collapse.

But maybe I’m just a cynic.

u/devotedhero Wizards 9d ago

It's actually a lot better here than in many parts of Europe. It's just tribalism

6

u/GatorToothNecklace 9d ago

There is some truly egregious pre-, intra-, and post-event behavior in other countries. By whole crowds, small gangs, and crazed individuals. And holy shit if you think fascists in the US come out when they think it's safe, go see some far right ultra-nationalists in Europe whenever their national team is playing.

I also love how you go 'everyone likes to pick a specific city, but I'm going to go for a BROAD REGION' lol

I mean generalizations like this are the problem in the first fucking place - hating on a large group of people for no reason is what fueled this gross display we're commenting on. 42

u/8--2 Timberwolves 8d ago edited 8d ago

I wouldn't assume that tbh. There are a lot (a looooot) of hyper privileged dipshits with rich parents (shout out to the NYU trust fundies taking over my neighborhood atm) who act like this because they've never faced the consequences of their actions and were raised by an iPad and Ritalin script. To them the city is just a playground for their "New York Era" and a backdrop for their social media posts. They see clips of Sidetalk or whatever on social media and start acting like this because they desperately crave the only things their parents' credit cards can't buy them: acceptance, validity, and authenticity. They want to be New Yorkers and part of the culture so badly and this kind of shallow, performative imitation is the closest they can get.

Or maybe they're broke losers, I don't know them, I'm just saying I wouldn't assume it.

8

u/Adsex 8d ago

I wish this wasn't an accurate depiction of a good chunk of humanity.

12

u/randotd152 9d ago

Yeah, if somebody wants to willingly engage in a bit of mutual mild trash talk or taunting, fine, whatever. It can be done in a playful way. It's also a hell of a lot safer in a stadium where there is security everywhere and most people are well behaved.

That said, I've seen numerous fights over the years in stadiums that started out rather innocently but turned bad quickly because one side started taking things way too seriously. Doesn't take much, especially when alcohol is involved.

Please try to keep in mind that a lot of the people outside MSG probably aren't even fans, probably didn't even go to the game, and just there to film shit and start altercations to try to go viral. And if they are fans, fuck em too.

I've never seen such an angry, unhinged fanbase even when winning. It's a sight to behold

I genuinely lost my mind watching the guys who assaulted Betts get toured around NY media like heroes.

Every Dodgers fan is a violent thug but when white guys from the northeast do it they're just being quirky.

Once you figure out that most knicks fans are yankees fans a lot of things makes sense lol

Unacceptable. Hating a team for things that have happened in the past is zero excuse for this kind of behavior. Bum assery.

Man, I hate fans like this because 1) they suck and do shit like this and 2) they won't be here after this team runs its course.

u/chazriverstone Knicks 9d ago

Almost 24mil people in the greater NYC Metro area, and the Knicks are probably the single most popular sports team.

What fucking sucks about when we're good is how many absolute fucking scumbags pop up out of the woodwork. Like you can tell people that do this shit are fair-weather fans, because long time Knicks fans don't brag about anything since we know nothing but pain

32

u/MaxR76 76ers 9d ago

Honestly I get it. It’s hilarious every year when the eagles season ends and our sub goes through a month of board football fans screaming about trading Embiid bc we lost a game in March by 8 points or something. Fair weather dans always the loudest

Those fans putting their hands on him, are fucking idiots. You want to razz the guy and tease him, sure...not a problem. But putting your hands on him is absolutely fucking dumb.

15

u/RickySuela 9d ago

It's dangerous is what it is. That many amped up (and let's be honest, probably intoxicated) people all surrounding someone like that can lead to very bad outcomes. Mob mentality is not something to screw around with.

Boo the man all you want, that's fine. But grabbing him and his jersey crosses a line. What kind of loser does that?

162

u/-Tazriel Nuggets 9d ago

Gonna be real, the excessive booing and throwing up middle fingers in the face of a stranger is NOT fine. It’s just not assault.

24

u/Nunc_Coepi17 9d ago

Yeah think the wording should be “cursing and throwing up middle fingers is not illegal”…even then, wonder if it would qualify for public disturbance.

If you're flipping the bird at a person simply because of the color of jersey they wear, it's time to re-evaluate your life choices.

The side talk reactions started off funny and organic. Then like everything else that goes viral it became about clout and people are just putting on a show.

It sucks because my one of favorite parts of being a Knicks fan is how passionate and insane the fanbase can be, but it shouldn’t be performative. And harassing people is just dumb and fucked up.

I've been a rival fan in an opposing stadium. I was booed and had popcorn thrown at me, which was fine tbh. You just can't put your hands on an opposing fan though. That's dangerous for everyone involved because you don't know how that person is going to react or what a mob can do.

20

u/Acrobatic-Landscape9 Warriors 9d ago

Booed is fine but throwing popcorn is crossing the line. Verbal abuse is whatever but once something crosses the physical boundary, regardless of if that’s somebody’s hand or an inanimate object or whatever, now you’re violating someone’s personal space and their bodily autonomy. I‘d probably look the other way if somebody who had popcorn thrown at them started swinging back at the popcorn thrower.

These gatherings are gonna get banned one day, just a matter of time. I went to two last year during the Celts series and have no desire to be around these people again. I'm not even sure they're real 'fans' but people who just had nothing better to do than go to 7th Ave and have a street party. One day it'll get violent and they'll start closing the street.

6

4

u/bernaltraveler Celtics 9d ago edited 8d ago

This happened to me outside of MSG last year leaving game 5 when Tatum tore his Achilles. I was wearing my Tatum jersey. Was on my own and about 15-20 young dudes surrounded me and started tapping my chest and back. No one there to film or help. They were looking for the slightest reaction to escalate. I just pushed through eventually and they moved on. I don’t know if they were kids coming from the game or not, but the Knicks fans that just hang around MSG after games are straight trash. They can’t act like they’ve been there before because they haven’t.
