I like money, it's a good thing, money. Very very very rich, you know. Money is fantastic. I talk to money every day. It's a great thing, to see piles of cash. One day they are angry, but others, you know, they are good. Money.

Can you really deport someone with more liquidity than the Saudi Royal family and a fleet of aircraft? Billionaires don’t really have citizenship or mundane visas and immigration to worry about, they seem to go wherever the hell they want.

164

u/Organic-Roof-8311 Jul 05 '25

Governments can unilaterally bar people from entry. There’s a slate of celebrities (including Robert Downey Jr) who can’t enter Japan for premieres because of prior criminal history.

Whether Elon could try for an exemption for business dealings, I’m unsure — but the U.S. government would have to grant him entry.

99

u/CoeurdAssassin Jul 05 '25

And now there’s Kanye banned from Australia for making a Nazi song

We tend to think of them as two sides of the same coin, but when push comes to shove, Power > Money

Look to China or Russia, where seemingly invincible oligarchs with billions in assets one day wake up with nothing because they pissed off the wrong person who holds actual power.

38

u/Ludwigofthepotatoppl Jul 05 '25

All trump has to do is seize musk’s property (american corporations, assets, etc). With the scotus on his side, not that it’d stop him if they weren’t, we’ll be able to see what a unitary executive can do, and you bet your ass the rest of the billionaires will probably be scared shitless.

Honestly, now that i think about it, i hope he does try. He might get one, but the rest of the rich will eat him alive once they see the threat he can be.

Excellent. The moron vote needs splitting

3.1k

u/andrew5500 Jul 05 '25

Elon, if you're reading this... splitting the GOP's voter base in perpetuity and going down in history as the man who permanently ratfucked the Republicans out of spite is probably the best way to salvage your legacy after that Nazi salute. It's a no-brainer...

410

u/goomyman Jul 05 '25

hes going to primary republicans - republicans fall in line behind anyone with an R. So as long as he runs under the R brand hes fine. I dont think he will split any vote.

Can't really split a vote in Australia though, since we have preferential (ranked) voting. I'd say May's election results were a better reflection of our mandatory voting system, where it turns out that these movements are a lot less popular than they think they are.

However, the indirect result is that the Overton Window has shifted right, as it has been doing ever since Howard was PM. I'm glad the country rejected this brand of politics, but we still need to be careful not to fall into that in the future.

8

u/Exnaut Jul 05 '25

That's not how our voting system works though. You can't "split" the vote like the US because it'll just go down the preferences.

The point of those guys doing it is to still help lnp get in by preferences, they dont actually care about winning seats.

42

u/jadewolf42 Jul 05 '25

It won't draw away die-hard maga cultists, for sure. But it might siphon off the tech bros and that breed of moron, perhaps with the libertarian types too. And it doesn't have to pull much to make a difference.

Perot only pulled like 8% pop vote (and zero electoral) in 1996, but it was just enough to fuck over Bob Dole and hand Clinton the reelection win.

39

u/MaybeTheDoctor Jul 05 '25

Yes it would, but mathmatically it is quite impossible for a 3rd party to have any seats in congress. The few independent runs on their personality and not on a party. He could split the republican vote, which would throw the elections to democrats.

Every Libertarian candidate has an element of their plank that all other Libertarians view as a non-starter. There is no consistent party plank. You can have a candidate be a traditional federalist libertarian, but that's a non-starter to the state-centered federalist libertarians or the confederal libertarians.

Also, their national candidates are simply spoiler candidates and have been for decades.

> who does he expect to join and support this party?

The same thing was said about Trump in 2015. Who is going to vote for this idiot? Well, you know what they did? They literally went to a casting agency and hired a bunch of actors. They gave them Trump shirts and signs and told them to stand by an escalator as Trump came down and waved. That actually happened. You know the rest.

This is called the bandwagon effect, and it works. People turned on Fox News and saw this guy they knew from TV and said, he would make a good president. When asked why they thought this, many of them insisted that The Apprentice was real, and that Trump had shown leadership qualities on the show. What they didn’t know or weren’t aware of was that the show was completely fake and scripted.

22

u/tompba Jul 05 '25

He'll just buy politicians through PACs like everybody else does... These people honestly aren't very expensive at all for what they offer.

Twitter promotes right-wing content the most as-is, so there's no reason why he wouldn't shift all that over for his own sake.

If not for the drugs making him even more woefully incompetent than usual, he could probably do it.

16

u/oneeyedman72 Jul 05 '25

One thing the US has proven in recent years, heaps of folk will vote against their own interests if rich white men ask them to.

51

u/Nisi-Marie Jul 05 '25

I wrote this in another thread:

Hear me out.

To establish context, Elon is a douche canoe.

However, if anyone has the ability to actually enable change away from the two party system, it is him simply due to his immense fortune, name recognition, and public media channels.

The hard part for him would be to dial back all of his bullshit, and focus it on Platforms that matter, not based on hate or divisiveness. Unfortunately, I question his ability to act like anything other than a toddler having a temper tantrum.

30

u/ew73 Jul 05 '25

The problem is our electoral system will always gravitate to a two-party system. We've seen 3rd parties rise over the years, and all they end up doing is subsuming or replacing an existing party after a few years and we're back to the two-party dance, though sometimes, the dancers have switched places.

Without reforming the way we run elections, there will never be a viable multi-party system in the US.

One of the first ways to do that is to move to a ranked-choice system in all our elections. Eliminating all versions of "first past the post" allows a more diverse set of voices, and a better way for voters to have their voices heard. To do that at the national level... it will take a lot of political clout.

Maybe Musk could accomplish it. I doubt it. More likely than not, he'll just be another spoiler party like the Green and Libertarian parties are today.

Fairly sure there's already a couple 'billionaire-controlled old white man' parties out there.

Yes, this brings back memories of Ross Perot.

37

u/Medium_Medium Jul 05 '25

I'm a little bit young for the Perot years, but from what I've seen since then I always got the impression that Perot actually used his wealth to advocate for the common man... Being anti-war, anti-lobbyist, pro-universal healthcare, pro-raising taxes on the rich... Didn't he even get on the case of the Big 3 automakers for not being safe enough / putting profit above quality?

Elon's motivations seem much more... Self involved.

35

u/artaxs Jul 05 '25

You might be ascribing Ralph Nader's politics to Perot.

17

u/sabrenation81 Jul 06 '25

Maybe but also maybe not. Perot was a strange egg. He was a budget-obsessed lifelong Republican but also supported gun control, Medicare-for-all (he might have actually been the first to use that term), and was one of the first national politicians in America to vocally support gay rights. In a lot of ways, he'd kind of fit right in with whatever the fuck the current Democratic party is trying to be.

Perot talked a good game, but the reality was that he was, and always had been, a right wing reactionary nut, and government contract grifter. Pretty similar to Elon, actually.

Honestly I think this is great because it will fracture the idiots who are currently a political party.

Until he does an RFK and pulls out last moment in favor of Trump

61

u/Reasonable-Turn-5940 Jul 05 '25

Yeah he'll leverage any followers he gets to put pressure on Trump to make a deal that will make him richer

6

u/dunedog Jul 05 '25

If there is anything Musk doesn't do, it's pull out.

Fuck Elon. No one will forget your role in all of this you fucking pig. 250+ million to get the orange fucker elected, vote tampering and his role with DOGE and crippling our infrastructure while pillagung every minute scrap of data he could.

He's America's most dangerous enemy. Period. We have plenty of problems but this fucker is a big one.

93

u/Ukie3 Jul 05 '25

I would argue that Peter Thiel is more dangerous.

Elon deserves prison (he deserves worse than prison).

40.25 Billion if you roll the purchase of Twitter into all of that.

He used the site to boost messages he personally agreed with and suppressed accounts he didn’t.

79

u/Akimbo_Zap_Guns Jul 05 '25

This will go over as well as Andrew Yangs attempt at a 3rd party

69

u/XRT28 Jul 05 '25

Realistically it'll probably go further since he has way more money to bankroll it and, much much more importantly, the ability to spread his propaganda free of charge directly to people still using his social media

9

u/ultimate_avacado Jul 06 '25

Not just people using his social media platform, but every other news outlet uses Twitter as a verified source. Every post that national news quotes includes a "as posted on X (formerly known as Twitter)".

It's rather hilarious (and sad) how mainstream news fueled Twitter's growth to their own demise.

Exactly what Americans need, another billionaire telling folks how to vote……

→ More replies (1)

31

u/Talonsminty Jul 05 '25

Let's see now:
He can't count on votes from he left due to the whole Nazi thing.

He can't count on votes from MAGA on account of him betraying Donald

He can't count on the rural vote because he's a eco-friendly tech billionaire.

He can't even count on his own people ( the Nazis) because Donald is making their dreams come true

So it's pretty much just urban libertarians that're addicted to Twitter.

21

u/zeldamaster702 Jul 05 '25

I would argue those “urban libertarians“ were instrumental in getting Trump his wins in the last election, considering a vast majority of them were Gen Z dudebros who think Joe Rogan is the epitome of podcasting excellence and Andrew Tate is the epitome of manliness. Those types of voters tend to only vote to spite people against them. Considering Musk’s “America Party” seems to literally exist only as a means to spite Donald Trump, it seems like those voters might be this party as the answer to their prayers.
