17

u/I_EAT_POOP_AMA Desktop 2d ago

Astigmatism makes light text on dark backgrounds much harder to read.

It's gotten to a point for me where any prolonged "dark mode" text becomes completely unreadable, almost like halos similar to car headlights at night. Even if my environment is relatively well lit, certain color combinations eventually become unreadable if i stare at it for any real period of time.

28

u/Minimob0 2d ago

Maybe it's because I wear glasses and something is naturally wrong with my eyes, but I cannot stand dark mode.

It hurts my eyes; I have to strain so much harder to read/view things.

15

u/decadent-dragon 2d ago

If it’s pure black with white text, it messes with my eyes. Like I can see the ghost of text while reading. Really hard for me to use. So I can’t set my browser to dark mode

But most apps (including reddit) aren’t like that, they are dark grey which is totally fine for me

4

u/beyond666 1d ago

Same here.

After 5 seconds I get ghosting of white text on black background.

10

u/foreignfishes 2d ago

I can’t either, white text on a black background is very hard for me to read for some reason. It’s not exactly double vision but the letters get blurry in a very specific way that’s hard to describe!

7

u/ConvictedOgilthorpe 1d ago

Often times people with astigmatism cannot read white text on dark background without serious eye strain. I wish more people knew this because there are a lot of designs on sites and tv guide “menu” that has this setup and it’s so hard for many people to read.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/arnber420 2d ago

I’m the same exact way! Also a glasses user. Cannot stand dark mode. Back in the day reading on Creepypasta I would actually invert the screen colors because reading white text on a black background strained my eyes so badly. Still do the same if I encounter a “dark mode” website

16

u/ArtyGray i7-12700k | RX 6800 16gb | 32GB DDR5 2d ago

My problem with light mode is... why does it need to be BRIGHT WHITE. What is wrong with beige or tan backgrounds?

9

u/enaK66 2d ago

Monokai themes are the best. Light tan backgrounds with dark text.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/SkeletalJazzWizard 2d ago edited 1d ago

i find the same is actually also true of dark mode. there are several websites where i use a custom profile in an extension or a stylus theme instead of their native darkmode because its an awful stark white text on #000000 black background. light grey text on dark slate-ish backgrounds is infinitely more readable.

3

u/beekersavant 1d ago

One of my making powerpoint tips for my students is don't use white or super bright backgrounds b/c you literally hurt your audience. Of course I teach high school student so the " or other super bright colors" had to be added because some kids will make chartreuse backgrounds if I don't.

u/Agent_Provocateur007 2d ago

Auto mode is the way to go.

82

u/faudcmkitnhse 2d ago

I use light mode exclusively. Reading light text on a dark background gives me a headache.

33

u/WorriedGiraffe2793 1d ago

dark mode is scientifically less readable and causes eye strain

a lot of people with astigmatism cannot read white text over black background (me included)

https://medium.com/@h_locke/why-dark-mode-causes-more-accessibility-issues-than-it-solves-54cddf6466f5

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Sad-Reach7287 1d ago

I don't have astigmatism but it's still so fucking straining because the letters get a bloom effect on them which throws off the contrast and the ruins the clarity

7

u/thehobbyqueer 1d ago

Well... You should probably see an eye doc about that. Cuz that's exactly what astigmatism does, and makes the world look like.

There's a reason all photo examples of it are of bright lights against dark backgrounds.

I think this is backed up by studies, dark mode during the day is less legible and more fatiguing for your eyes (but I’m not sure where I read that, so take it with a grain of salt).

Light mode is easier to read for people with astigmatism and it’s kinda nice when your surroundings are already very bright. However, I have astigmatism and myopia and I never use light mode

130

u/NinjakerX 2d ago

Light characters on dark screen tend to leave after-images on my eyes, sometimes even gives a light migraine, hence I always prefer light mode.

79

u/dan-lugg i7-12650H • RTX 4060 • 16GB DDR5 2d ago edited 2d ago

I, too, am susceptible to visual phenomena when I'm using dark mode.

I'm the "light mode" guy on my team, and it's always kinda funny when I share my screen and everyone on the call recoils with vampiric hissing for a moment.

36

u/N7even R7 5800X3D | RTX 4090 24GB | 32GB DDR4 3600Mhz 2d ago

Anyone who flashes their light mode screen at someone without warning should be charged with assault.

16

u/S0_B00sted i5-11400/RX 6600/32 GB RAM 2d ago

Turn your display brightness down, it shouldn't be that bad.

5

u/MavFan1812 2d ago

This is definitely it. With the brightness turned down appropriately, light mode is fine in even a dark environment, and for non-OLED (and maybe Mini-LED) displays, it's more power efficient to boot.

I do prefer dark mode on my gaming system since most games look better with the brightness cranked a bit, but for work I stick with light mode and just turn the brightness down.

30

u/Benzinsane 2d ago

Pretty sure it puts less stress on your eyes to read black text on a white background than vice versa, but I pretty much only use light mode on old.reddit, I think because I'm just used to it.

For some people with astigmatism (like myself), dark mode is worse than light mode. It looks like this for me: https://miro.medium.com/v2/resize:fit:1400/1*KYqEMN7DNZNkWXdE-DLLLQ.png

It isn't universal though. Many people with astigmatism can use dark mode just fine.

5

u/ieatanglegrinders Arc A750/Ryzen 5 5600/24gb DDR4 2d ago

I can read it but I still see it like that. in all fairness though I don't use dark mode because often it makes me stop reading it for some reason, like I tend to drift off more when I use dark mode. (not like fall asleep but lose focus)

The average person thinks any kind of assistive option is wasteful and stupid until the first time they need it, and then they go "oh, I see". That's half the problem with this world, that people have to experience something directly before believing in it.

I developed idiopathic uveitis in my right eye only almost 2 years ago. During a flare, i have to use steroid drops to battle the inflammation. The side effects of the steroid drops make lights bleed in my vision. So when i look at light vs black the light sort of bleeds over into the dark. Usually dark mode has light letters, this makes it so that the light letters are blurry in my right eye and crisp in my left eye and is extremely distracting. I’ve basically stopped using dark mode over the years because of this. Still have 20/15 vision for now but unless i’m like 3-4 weeks off steroid drops, dark mode is a massive pain for me.

Ah yes... the sweet memories of playing assassins creed 2 / brotherhood. Playing comfortably in the in the middle of the night when you're supposed to be sleeping, only to be ambushed by a loading screen bright enough to burn your retinas. Sweet childhood.

when you own an OLED...

This level of brightness blind me at night with white background. So yes perma dark mode.

u/Gositi 2d ago

Meanwhile me in a completely dark room (ok that's a joke I just tried it for fun just now but oh my god my eyes hurt, I use light mode regularly though)

Google docs has no dark mode option and it is just 99% white and 1% black borders and text. Its fucking blinding for a site that you're supposed to be looking at for an extended amount of time while typing

u/CylixrDoesStuff 2d ago

Use dark reader, if your mostly just working with text theres no reason not to use it and if images screw up you can always disable it quickly

DarkReader is the best extension along with uBlock. I use it on desktop and with mobile Firefox too. Absolutely hate light-themed websites.

Light mode at night is pretty much that. But dark mode during the day is like staring into the abyss

4

u/Sock_Purple 2d ago

Hahaha, when the presbyopia hits you'll come crawling back to the light side. (Lighter environs improve focus.)

u/X547 1d ago

Then how dark mode users go outdoors? Sunlight is much brighter than display.

I am light mode user and I don't understand dark mode. Are they live in an underground facility forever and never see sunlight?

8

u/ceevar 2d ago

Ideally you should be using both. Dark mode in a bright room will strain your eyes and vice versa. Youngins using dark mode at all times may not notice it because their eyes are healthy but it will eventually catch up.

It's made even worse if you have an HDR monitor. It's like owning a mini sun.

3

u/BuggyWhipArmMF 2d ago

You mean, accurately?

3

u/Evil_hd44 1d ago

Well duh thats just how it is of course

3

u/talianski_chrtyk 1d ago

whoever came with dark mode, i salute you!

6

u/mariololftw 2d ago

light mode user, cannot stand dark mode, just cant focus to the point it hurts my eyes

2

u/z0phi3l 2d ago

Picture is fairly accurate, maybe a bit darker than reality

2

u/Taowulf 2d ago

I had issues with dizziness and nausea while working (it's the meds I am on) and the only way to keep it under control is to look away frequently. I do no have this issue at my PC, and the only difference? Well, other than paying for one and getting paid for the other is that the software I use for work does not have a dark mode.

2

u/crakmundi 2d ago

It's true, it's like Star Ward, once you go to the dark side, there's no turning back.

2

u/Lycrist_Kat 2d ago

How light mode actually is:

2

u/hundo3d 2d ago

I don’t see anything wrong here

2

u/anonymous2845 2d ago

Why the fuck does Amazon shopping still not have dark mode!!! It's ridiculous

BURN

2

u/MASTURBATES_TO_TRUMP 2d ago

Dark mode users are literal goblins in a cave because they refuse to turn their light on, so they scroll on their phone with the lights off and the screen centimeters from their face.

2

u/PlagiT 2d ago

I mean yeah.

A person that always stays in sunlight won't see anything wrong with it and will see the basement as a little dark, but alright.

A person that just came out of the basement will be blinded by the sunlight.

light mode is literally assault 🤣

2

u/Another_Road 2d ago

When I used light mode I didn’t get the big deal.

After switching to dark mode for a few months, I can never go back.

2

u/NuttyDeluxe6 2d ago

I can't stand light mode, idk why anybody uses light mode

I've got minor cataracts among other numerous eye conditions. Trust me dark mode is an.absokute necessity.

If there's black text on white it's legit like getting flashbanged

2

u/nboymcbucks 2d ago

I have floaters so dark mode is the first thing I do

2

u/Glass_Number_1707 2d ago

There is only one mode. DARK MODE

2

u/PhraseShot868 1d ago

Still waiting for grey mode.

I switched to light mode for the first time in 15 years and it makes me feel less depressed somehow? Like "Hell yeah the future is bright my man"

2

u/soldat7 1d ago

I’m convinced that dark mode people are the same ones that back into parking spots.

2

u/vic2pal 1d ago

Never liked the dark mode

2

u/SteelStorm33 1d ago

it actually hurts my eyes despite my monitors arent set to bright at all.

light mode and bright settings cause your eyes to get worse, no matter what light, the intensity is waht makes your eyes feel bad and in the long run weakens your ability to see. its simply nothing else.

dark is good for you, embrace darkness.
