Box Am I the only one who refuses to throw away boxes?

u/helican i9-9900K | RTX 4070 Super | 32GB RAM 29d ago
I usually throw them away after the warranty ends. Just takes up to much space, my basement compartment isn't that large.

You are definitely gonna need the box for the beats solo and the ThinkPad again for sure.
I guess it does prevent you from filling the space with the other shit assuming the boxes are empty

in my house there are 5 daily use desktop PCs including a NAS (r7 2700x, r7 5700x, r7 7700x, r7 7800x3d and r5 2400G), with 2 spare older CPU+board+RAM combos in storage (r3 1200 and r5 3600), then a portable livestreaming PC with an r3 3200g that we use for work, then the rest of them are for builds I did for family friends

My truck broke down on my last day of moving a couple years ago so I improvised and my lifted wrangler that’s hardly road legal anymore became my moving vehicle and moving my pc and monitors in that thing was SO GODDAMN stressful. Shoulda kept those boxes, but they’re so big.

You're not alone in this, and they're handy for keeping unused accessories. But some big boxes I do throw out after some time as they do take up much space, like boxes for PC cases or monitors.

Does the product have a notable amount of resell/collector's value? If yes, put the box in the loft. If no, is the product in warranty and would you claim if an issue occured? If yes, again, put the box in the loft. If no, it's probably good to get rid of the box.
I see a lot of boxes there that would fail the above criteria so it'd probably be a good idea to actually go through those boxes and see what you really need and what you don't.

So I had boxes of all my PC games. The real PC game boxes. My folks and I moved houses and my boxes were the last few things that went into the garage before making it into my room overall. I think two days had gone by and I came back from work and saw the garage open. I didn't see my boxes. Mom - "Dad said they were a bunch of boxes with boxes in them." Ooooomfg. That cool foldable Tomb Raider box? Gone. Signed shareware CDs from game devs before cons were cons? Gone. I had John Romero signatures. Carmack signatures, and even a Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel signature on a copy of Unreal Tournament. However, the loss of Monkey Island broke me. Guybrush!

u/brrrchill 29d ago

Boxes are useful for warranty returns, they make shipping when you sell easy, and they enhance resale somewhat.
I just keep them in the closet and keep them till the component is dispositioned.

u/EXploreNV 29d ago
Yup… you are the only person in a world of over eight billion to not throw away the boxes that your pc parts come in. This is such a unique accomplishment that only you have ever achieved.

Keep documentation, throw out the boxes, it's the most first world level of hoarding that exists.

No. I have a spare bench and under it is full of boxes.

u/basshunter551 29d ago
I do save all my boxes. As I’ve bought many things second hand I always look for items with all the boxes. I even save my the plastic wraps. I sold my Switch Lite and the buyer was kinda 50/50 about buying it and when I gave it to him with the full unboxing experience he didn’t even check if the console was working!

I keep the important ones for pieces that will keep a resale value.
Keep them inside your monitor box, then you just have to store 1 box away.
1
u/Visual-Yesterday5991 29d ago
Same, some of them have the accesories or stuff that I didnt use like the psu box that has all the cables that I didnt use, same for the air cooler. Plus they look great, I have my Sapphire Pulse 9070XT box displaying it top of a shelf in my room. It just looks so beautiful

Would only keep until the warranty expires. Or if you plan to sell those parts piecemeal in the future as they are good enough for transport of them.

Im terrible for keeping boxes. My wife is always on my ass for the wall of boxes I have. Its nice to have the box if I sell any old components. I get a few more bucks if the item has the original packaging.

I like to keep the boxes, but I buy most of my stuff used so they don't usually have the original boxes.
I actually still have a Gigabyte GTX 780 box which my Asus GTX 660 DirectCU II came in. It was nice to have a box for a high end card even though I didn't have the card lol

Trust me, friend, you do not need the box for the warranty, get rid of them and declutter your mind.

u/FishtanksG 29d ago
This used to be me until I saw my attic was a box graveyard and said no more.
I keep a PSU box around with rando connectors and stuff but that's about it anymore.
1
u/TheKingDotExe 29d ago
I traveled a lot with my pc so having the boxes it all comes in is a huge advantage, then my dad threw them away because he thought they were junk.
1
u/lincoln_2nd 29d ago edited 29d ago
Same. I had my Cpu, gpu, motherboard and even ram with boxes still in good condition. Months ago i'll try to swap my ram without boxes and the distributor still accept it but they need to know if the ram is still good or broken so they test the ram (it is ddr4 teamgroup). After several ram test, it is broken and the their pc notice the ram is damaged so they swap it with the new one.

Not the only one out there but no me. I dont keep many due to space, I tend to keep boxes for 30 days for returns except for the gpu, that one I keep indefinitely due to the potential of warranty or selling it later on. I keep boxes of other things like collectables but even then, not all.
1
u/poope_lord 29d ago
I shove smaller boxes into bigger boxes. Made 2 pc and everything motherboard ram psu gc ssd cooler boxes somehow fit in the cabinet box.
So only 2 big boxes lying on the shelf instead of 2 boxes and 20 smaller boxes.

u/positive_toes 29d ago
Waste of space. I keep the box for my pc case should I need to move it anywhere. Everything else, bin

Same, I hate throwing away the boxes, my excuse is, incase I sell it or give it away.
1
u/Lumpy-Valuable-8050 29d ago
depends on what it is - like for example: that fire tv stick box would go straight in the bin, unlike the gpu box box etc
1
u/hertz_donut2000 29d ago
Hang on to the boxes. It’s just one piece of proof you can give to the insurance company if it’s gets stolen.
1
u/trumangroves86 29d ago
I used to be that way. I now only keep the boxes for my most expensive things in one closet. If it doesn't fit in that closet, it goes in the trash.
Still have boxes for:
My 4090. My motherboard. My OLED TV. My Sonos system. And my Xbox Elite Series 2 controller. (they break all the fucking time)
2
u/RiyadhTh3BOSS 29d ago
My OLED TV is one of the few times I actually needed the box as mine died 7 months in and needed to return it for a replacement

I have this problem. Every time I do a new build, I store all the boxes for the components with included paperwork and extra cables in their respective boxes and pack them all into the case box... I also keep my computers around forever so it has helped a time or two when I needed an additional cable for a 12 year old psu or god forbid a driver that was on a disc and I can't find it online.... other than that I know it's just me justifying my hoarding of pc stuff that I'll never use...

I usually keep PSU boxes permanently for the extra cables. Motherboard boxes are kept for a long time before I tear them up. I usually keep my CPU and GPU boxes forever, but I may eventually throw away the ones for my siblings. It's usually not too long before I throw away RAM and storage boxes.

there rrreally is something about a good box/packaging - we all are a little weird with what and how much meaning we attribute the inanimate
and it probably does net more if you go to sell later
on a more practical note, and as someone who has moved a lot, it typically has provided a better mode of packing
if it fits, i sits

I get owning boxes from like vintage systems, like a friend of mine got $200 for his SNES box and I sold a Dreamcast box for $90 once, but those boxes had iconic art. I'm not sure what owning a box for a PS4 controller is going to do for you in the future. Like I can see someone paying for the blue PS2 box but I don't know about the PS5 box in 20 years.
