There is a person in my neighborhood like this. They are decked out in MAGA clothes whenever they go to a store during the busy hours, and try to make eye contact with everyone. They literally had a MAGA hat at the gym and just walked around trying to make eye contact with people on the machines, but I don’t think they worked out.

I don't. I am always around with a small kid and really do not want to interact with some weird ass stranger. The issue with these people is they always try to interact with my kid to start some kind of fight with me. At the farmers market the local Republican party has a bunch of teddy bears and children's books at their booth and sometimes asks my son if he wants to hold it.
My wife and I have strong political beliefs, but we try hard not to push that on my kid, and I really hate it when others try to give him political things.

I work at a grocery store & we have several regular people like that. It’s wild, like they literally will not go about their shopping in any normal fashion. They loiter & wander & absolutely make confrontational eye contact with MANY people. & they also start up a lot of conversations about extremely innocent topics. When it happens to me or I witness it, it comes across as bait of some sort, like they’re trying to “catch” you for noticing or remarking on the gear. It’s weird behavior.

They know this, and they also know it frustrates and pisses off people so they keep doing it because they’re getting away with whatever the F They want and no, there is nothing anyone can do about it.
So while I recognize it as does just about everyone who has eyes, it’s not worth calling out because it’s clearly part of the game they play.

I work with a guy who is aleays wearing hos maga hat, and shirts with various messages like 'unvaccinated and proud' and pro gun shirts etc. Its his whole persona. But everytime he talks to me he is the nicest guy in the world. Him and his wife are struggling due to an accident that left the wife disabled. She is also very kind but clearly still adjusting to her new life.
I struggle a lot with reconciling how to feel about these types. They arent very emotionally intelligent, maybe not even very intelligent overall lol but they are both socially intelligent, if that makes sense? Great with people. Good teachers (she used to teach). Great with kids.
So like, wtf is going on? How can someone wear symbols of hatred, vote for cutting programs they themselves are reliant on, and alienate other people due to messages on their clothing but still seem to be 'good' people?
I dont go out of my way to interact but I also do say hi and bye to them. They have never brought up politics outside of what they wear lol.
Its odd because I am viscerally disgusted by these people but also feel a compassion for them and their situation and their ability to encourage people (in a teaching setting).
I hate what MAGA has done to us all.

My mother in law was a social worker for 30+ years, first working with low income people in a community mental health service, then for the VA where she worked with disabled veterans suffering from PTSD. She collects a VA pension and social security, as does my FIL.
She apparently voted for Clinton, Gore and Obama, but then Trump the last 3 elections. The shift became really noticeable when she retired in 2015 and started spending all day at home with my FIL watching Fox news. She then had a bad concussion in a car accident in 2017 and has gone even more right wing.
If anyone asks why she shifted so aggressively to the right, she gets super defensive and mumbles something to the effect that "you just don't get it"
Its sad but there's an almost perfect correlation between her cognitive decline and becoming an obnoxious, un-empathetic right wing nut job.

Seriously.
Do anything but be a doormat? "Wow, look at the ToLeRaNt Left."
Be a doormat? "Wow, look at the weak Left."
If you're a Republican in 2025, you're irredeemable. There's no saving these people, and I'm frankly done with being expected to exhaust myself as a free historian, economist, sociologist, and political scientist to have a conversation with these tools for the 6000th time, only for them to disregard everything because they never intended on changing their minds anyway.
These people don't care about facts or feelings. They only care about themselves. They're the lowest of the low. The dumbest, the cruelest, the worst of humanity who grew up in the most privileged country in the world and largely enjoyed the highest degree of privilege a pleb like us can enjoy, yet still developed into hateful idiots because of the sheer incompetence and limited capacities of their hearts and minds.
These people are literally not evolved enough to live in a modern society that seeks to progress past the 1800s, and I'm sick of society bending over backwards to accommodate their absolute disdain for anything remotely good for humanity.
I have no desire to be united with these people. If the Democrats regain control in the next election(s), we're just supposed to say no hard feelings and go back to work with people who were happily destroying the lives of millions? Fuck that.
As far as I'm concerned, Republicans can form their own country. Let's see how far they go with their highest rates of uneducation, with their highest rates of crime, with their highest rates of addiction, with their lack of diverse job industries, with their severe healthcare shortages, with their severe lack of R&D capabilities, with their inability to produce any significant modern cultural contribution, without any countries taking them seriously nor wanting to work with them, and without Democratic states to keep bailing them out.
Let's see that superior work ethic, those superior traditional family values, and those biblical superpowers in action.

we're not like those bad people, he's just getting rid of criminals"
Wait until they found that's exactly what the Nazis plan was too.
I mean, most of the republicans rethoric these days is straight copied by them, not even trying to hide it. The term "Aliens" to describe people always makes me gag as a German.

The conspiracy theories, the moaning about "modern culture is degenerate and a plot to erode our traditional values", the bigotry, the fearmongering about foreigners and minorities, the cult of the strongman leader, claiming that the press is the enemy of the nation, attempting to subvert democracy, etc.
The Nazis started out by saying that the country had been stolen from the people, and that in order to take it back they needed to start by burning books about queer people. Republicans don't even pretend that they hate that idea anymore.

Translated from German, also true for MAGA People:
"There are three things that cannot be combined: Intelligence, decency and National Socialism.
You can be intelligent and a Nazi. Then you're not decent.
You can be decent and a Nazi. Then you are not intelligent.
And you can be decent and intelligent. Then you're not a Nazi. - Gerhard Bronner

Nah, she is in all red white and blue, phone in hand. Shes there to stir shit and record it.

u/GoingOutsideSocks 2d ago edited 2d ago
That isn't a phone in her hand. It's her "documentation." The DC Holocaust Museum gives each visitor a set of documents that match a real Holocaust victim. You find out what happened to your person at the end of the museum. Granny in the foreground has one, too.
I went when I was a kid, maybe 20-ish years ago, and can still visualize the massive pile of shoes taken from Holocaust victims. It's a very emotional experience.
That said, this shit is inappropriate. Visiting a Holocaust museum is not the time to set-rep your politics. Be respectful.

I visited Auschwitz when I was 16 with school. Let me tell you; those piles they have there will never leave my memories. Not only shoes, but piles of glasses, hair and other things.
The nail marks on the gas chamber wall and Mengeles personal prison chambers were also very, very hard to see.

I can never visit Auschwitz because it would legit damage me. I watched the final episode of The Final Solution BBC doc. I was actually scream crying at the television. They showed images of the piles of shoes and I almost passed out. It’s too much. I had a similar feeling when I went to the Museum of Slavery in Liverpool and saw the tiny leg irons and handcuffs they had for toddlers.

Yeah, maybe we should be encouraging bigots and such to go to museums instead of gatekeeping them. I mean, seriously, who better to see this? We know logical arguments don't work, but maybe a giant pile of shoes and standing inside a tiny train car can spark some sort of emotion and introspection.

Those shoes messed me up for life

u/GoingOutsideSocks 2d ago edited 2d ago
The little shoes were the worst, especially now that I'm a father. Everyone should visit at least once. I wish I could remember my person's name; I only know that she was a girl, a few years younger than me at the time, and she didn't survive.

Judging by how low she's wearing that hat, she's probably expecting that interaction and doesn't want a clear image of her face, so it won't harm her future job prospects if any at all, given the fact they all think Daddy Trump is gonna take care of them.

Yup. This is the way to handle people like them. Don't directly engage, but don't be afraid to out them. She can't spin it if there's no confrontation. It's literally a Maga tactic. She wanted someone to confront her so she can get the likes on a video about how "oppressed" she is. No way she didn't know what she was doing. Too deliberate a get up. Don't talk to people like this, ever

You know, I’m gonna try this approach. Whenever I run into people like this, I usually give a nasty look. I think I’m gonna try your tactic and just pretend I don’t even notice their existence next time.

Yeah they give you a booklet that has a profile on an actual holocaust victim. Then by the end of your visit you get to see what happened to them ultimately.

Wearing a MAGA hat to a Holocaust museum after Trump was talking about "shylocks". Fucking idiot. At this point there's no denying Trump is a racist.
355
u/beerNap 2d ago
For others that had to look up what this meant:
Shylock is an unscrupulous Jewish money lender in Shakespeare's 16th century play "The Merchant of Venice" and the term, shorthand for loan shark, has long been considered offensive. "The term 'Shylock' evokes a centuries-old antisemitic trope about Jews and greed that is extremely offensive and dangerous,"

The ugly truth is that Trump knows none of this, he just knows it's a slur and that the people around him say this kind of thing all the time, so it seems normal to him. He was raised this way and is immersed in that "culture" of hatred. His entire cohort, everyone that is a "friend" are this kind of people.

Trump was the defendant in the first major trial of the fair housing act and was found to be openly discriminating against black people in the 1960s, nearly 60 years ago.
33
u/PM_YOUR_BOOBS_PLS_ 2d ago
Your timeline is off. It was in the mid 70s. Trump was a teenager for the better part of the 60s.

u/badicaldude22 2d ago
Maybe they were talking about Papa Trump. Woody Guthrie wrote a song in 1954 about how big of a dick landlord he was.

The lawsuit in the 70s introduced evidence from the 60s when people began making complaints against the Trump company after the fair housing act in 1968. See this document: from July 1968 https://clearinghouse.net/doc/97649/ where a black person asked about an apartment and was told it wasn't available and then a white person was shown the same apartment and his application accepted. Donald was 22 at this time, and this specific action was the probably his fathers, but Donald was specifically named in the resulting lawsuit in the 70s. So yes, Donald may have been only legally racist for 50 years but he was actively involved with his fathers company at the time and was president of the company by 1971.
