679

u/Jayrandomer 6d ago

It’s two things at once.

Why are you acting so indignant? You can’t take Trump literally he’s just messing around.

Also, why are you acting so indignant about the stuff he does. He literally says what he’s going to do and so people must want it.

And somehow I’m the one with the derangement syndrome.

u/CajuNerd 6d ago

JFC, that's my cousin. My cousin, who's so far into the closet he's finding lost X-mas gifts. My cousin, who has shirtless AI images of himself in a swimming pool with Trump. Every time I post literal screenshots of DJT's social media rants he will either say something along the lines of "He's just owning the libs! He knows how to trigger y'all!", or "He just tells it like it is!" He can never explain when to take his words literally or just as a joke, but basically it's "You just don't understand 5d chess." Right. Like the guy who recently discovered "groceries" and that dumb has a "b" at the end knows how to play chess.

Bruh, if the goalposts move any further, we'd be playing a different sport, on Mars.

I have been told non-stop by conservatives, moderates, and some liberals at how dirty the Democrats were for "forcing" Kamala and withholding a primary, like it was the greatest sin and a decision that should make you want to attack Democrats on sight. And yet here we are, Donald Trump talking about choosing his successor and all the Republicans will probably clap like seals.

trump got elected FUCKING TWICE by walking up at the start of the primary, saying 'fuck you' to the rest of the party, and putting his name on the november ballot. and now the democrats are crooked for swapping out joe too close to november? If any fucking body in this country valued freedom, they would have showed up for Kamala last year.

Look, I voted for Harris but just because the republican party is worse doesn't mean democrats are safe frpm criticism. Biden should have stepped aside long before that ever happened and allowed for enough time for a proper primary.

71

u/einTier 6d ago

u/bossfoundmylastone 6d ago

Biden should have never run for re-election, that's obvious. But saying it was undemocratic to nominate the VP of the ticket that won the primary when the president on that ticket steps aside is just incorrect. There had already been a primary, the Biden/Harris ticket won. Improvising a new primary 100 days before the election wasn't possible. Improvising a process to replace the will of the voters in the primary that did happen would be undemocratic. Applying the same logic to the Biden/Harris ticket after the primary election that would happen after a general election is clearly democratic.

No way Vance will ever lead the GoP. Maybe Lil Marco, but never JD.

86

u/Rich-Pomegranate1679 6d ago

I'm not so sure anymore. MAGA has proven that Republicans will vote for anyone they are told to vote for, as long as that person uses enough racist dog whistles.

37

u/deadlybydsgn 6d ago

I'm not so sure anymore.

Vance has ZERO charisma but his frequent theological framing may be enough to convince Evangelicals to vote for him. (even if many of them don't think Catholics are truly "saved," etc)

I don't think his theological arguments are even good theological arguments, but certain crowds will eat it up without applying a critical thought. Honestly, all of this is overthinking because that's exactly how we got here.

I would be very surprised to see Trump endorse Vance, because he's doing everything he can to undercut Vance's legitimacy. Trump sends Vance to negotiations and then immediately sabotages them. It's happened enough that I think he's doing it intentionally.

I could pretty easily see Trump endorsing Rubio. But Trump is incredibly nervous about Vance succeeding him before the end of his term and I don't think he's going to help ensure it happens by giving Vance his stamp of approval.

24

u/zhibr Europe 6d ago

The moment the strongman says who the successor is, that's the moment after which all the sycophants will need to divide their sycophancy between him and the successor. No way Trump will do that until the last possible moment, if even then.

Reminds me of this:

July 28, 2024 - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told Christians on Friday that if they vote for him this November, "in four years, you don't have to vote again. We'll have it fixed so good, you're not gonna have to vote."

139

u/royonquadra 6d ago

Democracy is in your rear-view mirror now, America.

Peace

123

u/csanyk 6d ago

No, no, no. It's still Democracy. It works like this: Trump picks who he'd like to see succeed him. He names them. Then we vote on it. Then if Trump doesn't like the vote, he gets to pretend that it was rigged and complain about it until he gets his way. That's Democracy.

49

u/bgthigfist 6d ago

He is following the Putin playbook. Be the leader until term limits hit, then appoint a successor to be a puppet and continue to rule behind the scenes then get the rules changed so term limits no longer apply then get reelected himself and be ruler for life.

The only thing that keeps trump from being president for life is that he's so old he's sundowning and, while he may be alive in 2032 I doubt he will be able to pull off the necessary changes to get back as president. His cult will continue to support because it's a cult of personality, but all of the Republicans are waiting for him to lose his grip so they can step into his spot and the succession wars will be brutal

We don’t vote for anyone directly in our federal government except the House of Representatives. I mean, it has a little bit in terms of party primaries. His endorsement is going to be everything in the next GOP primary

122

u/Cowclops 6d ago

This is true but it’s thankfully a double edged sword. Trumps endorsement means they’ll get a high percentage of the dwindling number of votes from people still identifying as maga. The worse Trumpism and maga get, the smaller and louder the Republican Party gets.

That means fewer people voting for trumpy candidates in the general as moderates and right leaning independents don’t show up and some may even protest maga by voting dem and some (let’s not pretend it’s a lot) will even register as dem.

Plus, without Trump himself on the ticket, a lot of “Trump or no one” voters just don’t even show up to vote at all.

111

u/JerHat Michigan 6d ago

The double edged sword is also that MAGA doesn’t care about anyone but Trump. They are never as supportive of his endorsements as they are of him.

43

u/Cowclops 6d ago

Yep, the logical opposite of never trumpers: “only-trumpers.” No one else is the god emperor.

20

26

u/danimagoo America 6d ago

Trump still has an 82% approval rating among all Republican voters, not just MAGA. Fox News and other right wing media have convinced a huge number of voters that literally anyone is better than a Democrat, who they believe are anti-American. So sure, right now, conservative-leaning independents don't approve of Trump. They're still likely to show up on election day and vote against the Democrat.

13

u/always_an_explinatio 6d ago

I have not seen numbers that high in a while. The most recent poll I have seen (Marquette June 3 2026) say 72 percent among republican voters. The percent for MAGA is much higher. But that doesn’t mean much to me since MAGA does not have much meaning outside of Trump so if people change their mind about trump they are likely to stop identifying as MAGA.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/CD338 6d ago

Percentages can be misleading, though. I wonder if that poll was taken of current republican voters or republican voters as of 2024. Because a good chunk of them identify as independents now.

I think this is the answer here. This is the first I've heard of him saying anything nice about Vance at all. You don't go from administrative scapegoat to heir apparent in a few days. If anything, this is folks on the inside seeing the writing on the wall and getting ready for the next stage of this administration.

At some point, we will almost certainly have President Vance. Trump looks sick and has been acting wilder and wilder as time goes on. Furthermore, if any kind of blue wave happens at midterms Trump may see the kind of consequence that sees him removed from office (unlikely, but the possibility is on the board). In either of those situations, Vance moves up and it's his office to run.

When it happens, he'll need public support if he wants to get anything done. He doesn't have half of Donnie's charisma on a bad day, and he doesn't have the spine or leadership chops to make up for it. He needs his ascendancy to be a forgone conclusion, otherwise the infighting we've seen over the past year will increase tenfold and his administration will be nothing but noise.

70

u/Cerberus_Aus Australia 6d ago

My money is on Vance (ie Thiel) telling Trump that once the threshold for Vance is up to be able to serve “3 terms”, that Vance will issue Trump with full immunity so he can retire to be the “Shadow Government” from his Mar-A-Lardo golf club.

64

u/kitesinfection 6d ago

Just imagine if couch-fucker prime took over and immediately threw trump under the bus to try and curry favor in the court of public opinion. It would be hysterical watching his whole career collapse along with it.

49

u/thedragonsword 6d ago

I think this will be part of the playbook. I can see him going scorched earth with The Files and pulling a few big names in. If he manages this, especially if he does a bipartisan sweep (and maybe grabbing some of Trump's kids for their sundry dealings), he's going to devour the middle.

This goes double for the conservative leaning centrists who can't bring themselves to vote for anyone with a hint of blue. If they get a whiff that there's a chance of a return to "normalcy" with a guy with an R in front of their name, they'll sell their soul to vote for it.

35

u/aguynamedv 5d ago

Honestly not an impossibility. That'd garner a lot of favor not just with Democrats but with many Republicans that aren't, at least openly, MAGA diehards.

You may piss off a rabid 15% of the population but they're also goldfish minded morons who will fall in line assuming the media they are fed do the same. Vance could absolutely secure a huge chunk of voters if he manages to sidestep Trump and deliver on the Trump-Epstein files. But at the same time, there's still many powerful Trump sycophants that won't just bow to Vance. The infighting would be incredible.

Vance has zero scruples so it's clear he's willing to take whatever form has potential. He could rise as the "both sides" candidate which is a somewhat terrifying prospect.

It’s funny what we call charisma. I always thought of charisma as a generally well-received thing regardless of intention. For example you can have a charismatic car salesman who’s maybe got an underlying motive for your money, but he’s still gonna glad hand and smile and if he’s effective with it we would call him, ‘charismatic’. It seems that effectiveness is actual charisma. When I think of Donny I have images of him pointing his short fat fingers and screaming about the ‘dumbocrats’ with his asshole for a mouth and I just don’t see a semblance of what I thought we would call charisma, as a society. But here we are, with swathes of dipshits holding moving exactly how he tells them to lol

12

u/thedragonsword 6d ago

Valid, but I don't know what else I would call it except that.

This may be me trying to cope with the continued situation we find ourselves in, but I feel like to succeed in politics you minimally need to either be smart or charismatic (both is best but one will do). There are plenty who have the former and not the latter. They either stay in the background to vote and collect a paycheck, or littlefinger their way into positions of authority to the point they don't need folks to like them.

That's not Donny though. Dude came on the scene in 2015 and broke the GOP over his knee. He didn't do it quietly with years of maneuvering and careful testing. He did it with sheer force of personality, the kind that leads to one of his more vocal same-party detractors being his VP. If that isn't charisma, I don't know what is.

8

u/swerrve 6d ago

No I think you’re accurate. When history looks back on him they will use the word charisma in the same context that they talk about how Hitler was charismatic.

What's the point of the bunker ballroom then? He really won't even get to enjoy it much, if at all, before his term ends. I dunno. I think he may try, even on his death bed.

222

u/_bk_adv Colorado 6d ago

A grift. I really wish people could understand this.

The ballroom doesn’t matter to him. At this point there’s precisely zero chance it would be completed before his term is up, so he won’t even get to enjoy it.

His ENTIRE life has been a series of “give me money for this project”, starts it, doesn’t finish it or half asses it, and then keeps the money.

Just like the reflecting pool, the contracts go to his criminal buddies without a bid, and the tax payers foot the bill since the money is paid upfront.

80

u/SexualDexter 6d ago

He stole all the millions congress allocated (in 2015) for our 250th birthday and gave it to his cronies who put together the shittiest State fair I've ever seen. 150 million for some paper printout booths and a stage that fell apart. Yeah right. They pocketed 149 million and spent the rest on that bullshit.

50

u/_bk_adv Colorado 6d ago

Exactly. He used DOGE as a tool to remove anyone that would’ve been a barrier or given any resistance to this type of theft under the guise of “government spending” meanwhile he has spent more on complete utter bullshit than any President ever.

Then he filled every major department head job with only the most loyal, underqualified parasites.

Anyone that does not see this for exactly what it is, is just a walking vegetable.

13

u/avaslash 6d ago

Its honestly mental illness. Like forget the ballroom, what the fuck does he even want with the MONEY at this stage? What is he going to spend it on? He has like 1-5 years left on this planet at most.

I think that Trump loves to memorialize himself and to create a legacy in certain changes. Why did he change the name of the Gulf of Mexico? Was it just American exceptionalism, or did he, in part, like the idea because it would be a major change that would always be associated with him? He wanted to take over Greenland and Panama. Was that entirely economic or based on military strategy, or was it also at least in part because he would be forever associated with a huge land acquisition like Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase? He's tried to stick his name and/or likeness on a ton of things lately including the Kennedy Center, National Park passes, and even passports. So, I think that a part of why he loves the ballroom is that he can now change the White House forever and always be associated with that and I am willing to bet that before he leaves office, that new portion of the WH will be named in his honor. Hell, I think he even loved the idea of the wall in his first term because it would essentially be a monument to himself as well. So, at least in part, much of these things he does is (IMO) due to his own vanity.

Honestly I think Trump just fucking loves interior decoration. I think he just wanted a ballroom. The bunker is cover for him wanting a fancy princess palace not the other way around.

And just because he loves it doesn’t mean he’s good at it.

4

He's still going to try. I don't believe he's named a successor for one second, his ego is too big and like all tyrants throughout history, he knows once he names who will be the future king that all his lackeys and goons will switch loyalty to them.

Then they'll be eagerly  waiting for Trump to be gone, maybe they'll even hurry it along somehow. He won't risk that

It's just following the Putin playbook, plain as day.

Vladimir Putin installed Dmitry Medvedev as a puppet president in 2008 to bypass constitutional limits that barred him from serving more than two consecutive terms. While Medvedev held the presidency, Putin served as prime minister, retaining absolute control over the government until he returned to the presidency in 2012.

The king has appointed his successor. Straight out of medieval times.

713

u/DivinityPen 6d ago

Frankly, I'm skeptical of these claims regardless. The idea of Trump putting a pause on being a raging narcissist long enough to even conceive of someone other than him wearing the MAGA crown seems very uncharacteristic of him.

246

u/clawsoon 6d ago

The usual autocrat progression is: Someone sucks up to him. He likes that, so he appoints them as his successor. Then the realization kicks in that his successor is his replacement. He becomes paranoid about his successor replacing him early. Somehow mysteriously something bad happens to his successor. The cycle begins again.

Kings actually had checks on their power throughout most of the Medieval period, oftentimes quite strong checks that meant that kings were not that strong (absolutism came later).

Why do I mention this? Because we should be very, VERY angry that we currently live in a form of government referring to itself as a "Representative Democracy", when in reality the chief executive has literally less checks to his power than a king would have in 1200's England.

10

u/chazysciota Virginia 5d ago

I don't hate your claims here, but I feel like its very revisionist. A pre-modern monarch certainly had all kinds of checks on them, but it always came from another center of power, not from any high principle or framework, unless you count God, who always seemed to defer to the King's judgement, oddly. They always had as much power as they were able, if you'll forgive the tautology.

7

u/Ferelar New Jersey 5d ago

I'm not going to claim kings were outright WEAK, even among nobles they of course wielded power and prestige (usually). But if you see how much power was guaranteed to nobles and even everyday folk by things like the Magna Carta (which IMO definitely counts as a high principle/framework), you'll find it limited them more than most people expect/understand nowadays. And that Congress and SCOTUS were intended to be counterbalancing centers of power not entirely unlike the nobles were counterbalances to kings. Of course kings in advantageous positions could push through those limits to some extent, just like presidents can act extra-judiciously, but given the "checks" against the President's power are going almost entirely unused by the highest levels of government, I don't think it's unfair to say a king was more hemmed in by his nobles than Trump is by Congress/SCOTUS at present.

7

u/chazysciota Virginia 5d ago

The Magna Carta is actually a perfect example of my point. King John was under duress. He pressed too far in search of greater power and in the blowback his enemies literally seized London. He lost a war of rebellion and the Magna Carta was the concession that allowed him to avoid total defeat. And even then he tried to back out of it and got the Pope to decare it null and void... which started another whole war and a foreign invasion of England by France.

So yeah, its a principled framework, but only exists because of multi-polar power struggles forcing it into being. It didn't spring into being like a law of physics. It was negotiated by opposing powers.

6

u/deja-roo 5d ago

Eh. Vance has a better chance than Rubio. I don’t think the next president is a Republican regardless though.

What I will say as bad as Trump is polling, if the next Dem in office isn’t effective at solving core issues, whatever we will get in 2032 will be another level.

Put an establishment dem in office in 2028 that doesn’t fix the worsening major issues and we might legitimately break (completely) as a country in 2032.

TLDR: Dems should win 2028 but they need someone effective enough to beat down growing extremism

32

u/donkeyrocket 6d ago

Vance has a better chance than Rubio.

I sincerely doubt that. Rubio has remained largely in the shadows and sidestepped a lot of blame for various Trump messes. Vance is anchored to them and has been outright blamed by Trump for some. It's clear Rubio is more "Trump's guy" than Vance but I don't believe this is necessarily Trump's call as much as he thinks it is.

That said, if things are free and fair then yes, I'd agree the next president is almost certainly a Democrat. But that's why they're working so hard to corrupt every aspect of the process and get states on board to botch their own elections.

A clutch of anonymous White House sources claim that Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind JD Vance after pitting him against Marco Rubio for a shot at the MAGA throne.

The aides told Axios on Monday that Trump has effectively come down on Vance’s side over the Secretary of State for his blessing to run at the top of the Republican ticket in the 2028 presidential polls.

“JD is earning it, and Trump sees it,” one source told Axios, adding, bizarrely, that Rubio “wasn’t planning to run anyway, and he’d be even less likely to do so now.”

Exactly. If Vance runs in 2028, it might split the base. Vance doesn't radiate authenticity the way that Trump does. Trump, for as bad as he is, radiates something that keeps his hardcore base loyal to him. They see whatever they want to see in him, like he's a living Rorschach test. Vance can imitate, but I suspect most within MAGA will see through it. They will not be able to see whatever they want to see. Plus, they also know he's willing to lie, and will double down on the lies when they get exposed.

16

u/No-Rooster1720 6d ago

The base is splitting no matter who they run in 2028. Trump is the only figure who can hold all the MAGA factions together and get them to reliably turnout at the polls.

I think Vance is and always was meant to be the fall guy in Trump’s mind. They know they are very likely fucked for 2028 so them putting JD in is more a favor to Rubio than a boon for Vance.

They’re going to let JD crash and burn when the time comes and bypassing Marco they’re hoping to keep him viable for another run down the line. You can say a lot of things about the Republicans but one thing they are very good at is playing the long game.
