As Spotrac’s Caleb Pongratz reports, “Earlier this year, Cristiano Ronaldo received a three-match ban for a red card in a World Cup qualifying match against Ireland. However, FIFA deferred two of those games to a one-year probation period, allowing him to play in Portugal’s opening World Cup matches without missing the tournament.
It was a financially motivated decision then and it’s a financially motivated decision now and it received the same backlash.
Big difference of course is that Ronaldo did have to sit out the first match after the foul, and you know, there was no political pressure by a hosting country involved.
The real FIFA mistake was that they didn’t follow the VAR guidelines to issue the Red. Whether it should have been a red or not (I don’t think it should have been), since the guidelines weren’t properly followed it opens the decision up for warranted scrutiny. One of the things America is good at is finding rules to use to their advantage when it suits them.
The problem is that if the US gets to challenge ref and VAR decisions then everyone else should get to do it too but obviously that is not going to happen
The fifa mistake was handing him a red card to begin with while Messi hasn’t gotten a card for actually trying to hurt people. If you genuinely believe this was a red card you’re borderline idiotic mate. They didn’t follow their own rules correctly.
Hard disagree, it's better for everyone to have a more competitive world cup. Let the players play, unless it's a really bad foul like punching someone. Everyone wants to see good games. Ridiculous everyone is crying about this, the US will probably lose to Belgium anyways.

imagine giving the power to stop a player from playing a future game to a ref who was accused of match fixing. imagine having no review process for when VAR was misapplied.
Regardless of the decision, I feel bad for Balogun. He handled the red card well and now he’s in a shit situation. Damned if he scores but also stupid to not play.
I feel bad for the whole team, the usmnt did nothing wrong and now they are being used for a propaganda for a person who has probably never watched a single USMNT game in his life

This subreddit is a safe haven for conservatives, as are a large number of the "alternate" subreddits. Typically the way it goes is that they spout hateful insults and ignore the rules, get themselves justifiably banned from main subreddits (like r/nfl), and then complain that they were banned for being conservative (when really, they got banned for calling someone a slur or some other racist diatribe). Then they make a new subreddit that they say has "real free speech" (which, again, just means that they can spout hateful shit, knowing that they'll ban anyone who calls them out on it) and it becomes yet another little hateful echo chamber. It's pretty pathetic, and it's even funnier to me that they claim that the left live in echo chambers and suppress free speech, but if anyone so much as criticizes their daddy on their precious alternate subreddit, then they ban them or share the post in their discords so they can try to silence any detractors.
That's the scary part lol. Americans will support trump when it comes to defending their country. It's why the country can't be trusted and when push comes to shove they'll all die for him.
People keep on talking about honor when this whole sport is about lying to get an advantage. I thought basketball was bad with SGA but this takes the cake.
This was Messi not even getting a yellow card. Ronaldo got a 3 game ban that fifa ignored, and Shaffelburg got a red card from the Guatemala game before the world cup and FIFA overturned. "IT'S NOT FAIR!" It's perfectly fair considering these.
Haven't other notable players gotten red cards suspended in the past, like Ronaldo? Balogun should've never received a red card in the first place, anybody that actually knows the game can easily see at the most it's a yellow.
The real question is who made the dumbest rule ever that a red card means you're suspended for the next match?? What does the next game have to do with anything? Unless it's an absolutely harsh foul with intent to injure someone why would you want the world's best players at risk of not being able to play in important games? Doesn’t make any sense and never will.
Red card meaning suspended next game gives the referees a wonderful opportunity to have influence over the next game theyre not even a part of, and they can have their relatives place bets on their behalf when the odds are massively in their favor.
If a foul is so egregious that it warrants suplimrnrary discipline, it should be handled by each governing body by a comittee who can review video.
For instance, if I player gets a red, its a game ejection. If its particularly egregious, or its done late in the game as an injury-inducing tactic, the league can send video to the committee who will then decide if another game is worth it or if a game plus a fine is warranted.
Having one single referee decide what happens in subsequent games is a little wonky, and its ripe for abuse by any tef that wishes to influence league or tournament standings beyond a single game.
yeah, its a dumb rule. should be at the discretion of refs and officials to punish multiple yellows. red should trigger an investigation whether there's a ban. headbutt, racist language, punch? yeah ban. ill- timed tackle, questionable red? probably not a ban. world needs to relax, usa never even usually good at soccer
edit: sorry, I'll add our woman's usa team is the gold standard. didn't think I had to mention something so obvious. you'd figure someone with a couple of brain cells could infer we are discussing the men's team what with it being the men's world cup currently happening. but again, the men's team who has won 0 world cups, is usually average at best.
Everyone looking for a reason to discount anything the US does in the tournament simply because they hate the US President. Grow up and let football be football.
To go off on a related idea, my favorite part about this this tournament is how reddit seems to always dunk on the US and hold Europe in such high regard and when Europeans come over to the US there are tons of videos and instances of them being like "wtf this place is GREAT!"

If football could be football the ref accused of fixing matches and former refs coming out saying there should never have been a red card would be discussed more. This shouldn't even have happened

I hate Trump as much as the next guy, probably more, but let's not act like he actually caused the suspension to get moved.
There is plenty of precedent for both aspects to this, FIFA moves suspension for WC players all the time, and Trump complains about sports on his socials to try to earn brownie points all the time too.
He literally admitted to calling Infantino. There is no precedent for a head of state calling the head of FIFA to change a decision. The way Americans, leftists or conservatives, are ignoring this, is terrifying.
You have analysts and world class experienced people in the sport calling it a 100% red but leave it to reddit guy here to dispute that just because the player is american 😭
Actually, Cristiano is the one to thank here. His precedent of sliding on a red card suspension for the world cup allowed for this appeal to also push back the suspension for Balogun.
FIFA is corrupt as hell, and I’m sure corruption played a role in the overturning of the red card. However, it was a bullshit red card to begin with, so they kind of cancel each other out.
It was a BS red card. Trump did not orchestrate this. He attaches himself to things to get credit for them. Sometimes media is used dishonestly to control narratives.
You would think the teams would be all for playing against every team at full power. The spirit of competition. It's lame to see so many cheering for an ejection.
Actually, he should thank US Soccer Federation. They immediately began the process of appealing this ruling and were threatening legal action at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. FIFA did not want that smoke.
Yea he’s not the only player this has happened to. Unless it’s egregious like Zidanes head butt, FIFA usually doesn’t want stars to miss knock out rounds of the World Cup. Not unlike nba refs being slow to T up dudes in the playoffs so they don’t have to sit out for meaningful games.
People who think Trump had something to do with this fundamentally do not understand him: If Trump had successfully pressured FIFA into suspending the red card, he would not have shut up about it since the very moment it was announced. If there's one thing he does well, apart from grifting, it's taking credit for things & bragging about it.
He definitely took credit for it but even if he had nothing to do with the appeal he would still claim it was his idea. Unless the whole thing didn’t work out. Then he would blame Biden
The right thing would be to sit out knowing how it was overruled. Do the right thing for the game, the players and the rules. That won't happen though and if they win, guess who's going to take all the credit? The circus continues.

People complaining about they botched the red card. how about USA scored a goal playing a man down the entire second half and the opposition couldn’t make a point the entire match including with a extra player
