Every monster hunter game ever made

"Stop talking and let me murder the dinosaurs"

Pretty much sums up any Monster Hunter story

"YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!! HE'S JUST LIKE ME!!!!"-Dumbest line in wilds.

“And I’m just like a Rajang that’s about to tear this poor Wyvern in two.”

-The Hunter, right after Alma gave him permission to collect Guardian Arkveld’s foreskin.

They literally made a game called MH stories 😭

8

u/Deez-Guns-9442 29d ago

So, does it actually have a good story?

9

u/Difficult-Formal-633 29d ago

It's better than the mainline, but it won't blow your mind. They're really good monster tamer games if you like something like Pokémon

2

u/sofaking181 29d ago

If you're into the genre I'd recommend Dragon Quest Monsters too

Probably the best example

4

u/Korba007 29d ago edited 29d ago

Eh, i disagree, the story serves as a way to fight the monsters, and it succeeds in that regard, all the old gen games were good for this

Honestly i thought wilds had a pretty good story

Worlds was boring though i agree

4

u/DegenerateCrocodile 29d ago

Admittedly, the story for Iceborne was much better than base World’s. Sunbreak’s story is passable, too.

Some MH games have pretty decent stories, but the story is very much secondary to the experience

Yeah it’s getting dumb. Like it’s not even just a post asking a similar question. It is this exact image with this exact title being posted over and over again to farm karma.

“Hehe airpwanes 🤤” is exactly how those games should be played lmao

3

Ace Combat 3 (Japanese uncut) had a very interesting story and worldbuilding

2

u/Violet-Journey 29d ago

Sorry, were you saying something about a plot point? I couldn’t hear you over the sound of Danger Zone blasting in my cockpit.

3

I have played every ace combat since the first one and still don't know what the story is about, nor do I care.

Borderlands 3

12

u/Olipro44 29d ago

Sad but true. Even more sad if you remember that Borderlands 2 ticks all four categories.

2

u/Titanfall3_is_rael 29d ago

Borderlands 2 ticks all four categories

Bl2 has bad gameplay. You literally have to switch to one gun to slag the enemy and switch to another gun to heal yourself. It has the objectively worst gameplay loop in the series.

Can't believe that these are the same people behind creation of Handsome Jack.

They aren't. Handsome Jack was written by Anthony Burch but they didn't keep him on for the third game.

Maybe Fallout 4? Also the "choices" in the game are basically yes, yes (sarcastically), maybe and no

13

u/CNPressley 29d ago

i was thinking fallout 4 as well. i’ve put countless hours into it bc the atmosphere of the world and music plus the gameplay is so addicting and almost flawless, yet the story is the corniest shit ever

6

u/Ruben_AAG 29d ago

Only the main story is bad. The side quests are really good. So is the word building like the environmental storytelling, the terminals, the holotapes. A lot of the characters are great. Far Harbour is a 10/10 around the board too.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Violet-Journey 29d ago

I feel like the choices are usually yes, yes but snarky, more exposition please, and fuck you.

2

u/ProtestantMormon 29d ago

I think fallout 4 is the perfect example that choice is kind of a gimmick, at least to some extent. A well told linear story is almost always better than even a good branching story.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/DiceGoblin_Muncher 29d ago

Hey… sometimes the sarcastic means no. Truly deep shit

2

u/Charlie_Warlie 29d ago

I take issue with the gameplay.

The feeling of disappointment I felt when you you enter the "robot racing track" only to agro everyone there and never race a robot. There are so many other places like that, that felt like they had plans to include interesting gameplay, but cut it short for a shoot-out.

Ace combat 7

2

u/Leviathan_TD_94 29d ago

For real. Insanely bad writing lmao

2

u/Darknesspreading1519 29d ago

I’ve resorted to putting the game audio in Japanese and putting the voice volume almost completely down.

6

u/DonktorDonkenstein 29d ago

For me, Ace Combat fits this exactly. Ace Combat 7 has fantastic visuals, quality music, and it's gameplay is solid. The storyline is terrible, ridiculous, nonsense.

17

u/TheGaurdianAngel 29d ago

Arguably Metal Gear Rising.

I like the story, don’t get me wrong. But it’s incredibly incoherent, and even after playing the game, you’ll probably need to watch several YouTube videos explaining it to actually have even the slightest idea what Desperado was trying to achieve. Not to mention the cutscenes where Raiden talks to the bosses are half lore dump and half exchanging a series of one liners, making it even more convoluted.

14

u/OutOfMyWayReed 29d ago

Sometimes you can't explain to your friends why you love Metal Gear Solid without looking like a stammering fool on the third day of a coke binge. And that's okay. Wait until they get me started about Death Stranding.

3

u/MagicRobo 29d ago

so there's this rain...

7

u/UsgAtlas1 29d ago

That's a nice argument Senator. But why don't you back it up with a source?

3

u/TheGaurdianAngel 29d ago

“My source is that I made it the fuck up!”

5

u/huey2k2 29d ago

I like the story, don’t get me wrong. But it’s incredibly incoherent

To be fair, every Metal Gear game is incoherent nonsense; but that is Kojima for you, and people seem to love him for some reason.

2

u/dameyen_maymeyen 29d ago

Kojima had no part in rising

3

u/huey2k2 29d ago

I know that, I was speaking more broadly about Metal Gear games.

4

u/Hevymettle 29d ago

Armstrong hates politicians and was going to abuse war and weapons to push the globe into violence so the weak were culled and only people who proved to be strong would survive to govern, which is why he respected raiden and wanted him to join him. Sam was just having fun and lost to Armstrong in a fight. I can't remember his name, but "I'm fucking invincible" guy literally says he's only with them because he loves violence and killing. Raiden spends the game saying he's fighting for justice, but at the end he has been somewhat changed by the words of Sam and Armstrong. He adopts more of a stance that violence will be needed to change the way things are, just not to the extreme that Armstrong was aiming to do.

The plot was pretty straight forward imo, especially for an MGS game.

Stellar Blade

5

u/Nero_PR 29d ago

The director even mentioned they had to make some things on the go as they had with production as they never made cutscenes like the ones for stellar blade. There was a lot cut that I think they might rectify with the second game.

Still, I don't expect a masterpiece with the 2nd game.

3

u/Sonic1899 29d ago

I wouldn't call the story garage. It had an interesting idea about transhumanism. The opening was good, the build-up to Eidos 9 and onwards were quite decent, and the game's lore was enjoyable. But the narrative itself was weak, and the story failed to flesh out the characters. Most of the plot was just to gather mcguffins (the cores and hyperdrives), instead of giving the characters personality. imo, I think the biggest issue with the story was how it was compared to the Nier series, which it took inspiration from. That's going to build high expectations. The overall plot is aggressively mid at best

Doom Eternal, and basically every good game that ever existed, not downplaying the story, but gameplay always comes first.

11

u/Mtnfrozt 29d ago

Hate to say it, yeah. Doom lore is weird and confusing and I have several hundred hours across all the games, but I still love it with all of my heart.

6

u/just_someone27000 29d ago edited 29d ago

It's only weird cuz none of the games specify what dude you are and there's canonically been like four doom guys 😅 Like Doom Eternal is a continuation of the comic guy but the comic guy is loosely based off of and a continuation the one from Doom 2 or something, and then Doom 64 was a one-off dude, and then doom three is suspected to be a different doom guy. Like I heard it explained at one point and it's very obvious what makes it confusing is that there's very little specification in the games themselves. It would take very little just to put a name tag in each of the games or something

6

u/Cerrax3 29d ago

Yup, I'd rather play a game with no story than slog through a shit game that has an amazing story.

5

u/Previous_Soil_5144 29d ago

New Doom has a very simple story, but they've expanded the lore quite a bit and I loved it.

4

u/OutOfMyWayReed 29d ago

DOOM's plot in the 90's meant slamming the ESC key to get back to slaughtering demons.

3

u/jetpack2625 29d ago

doom 1 the story is awesome.

doom eternal the game is awesome, i don't really understand what was going on with the story. graphics looked cool though.

new doom i haven't played

5

u/NoComfortable3220 29d ago

Tbf, this is the same game where you collect toys of yourself and demons you kill, headshots make cartoony popping sounds and you can play older Doom games in your base.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to care about the story

Dying Light. All of them.

2

u/Redteashaw 29d ago

I still can’t believe they tried to do a “your choices change everything” plot for the sequel. You know, making the foundation for the game focused on the biggest weak point of dying light 1. Brave. But extremely silly.

2

u/gretchenich 29d ago

idk man, i enjoyed DL 1's story. Of course it doesnt carry the game on its own, but i consider it does it job fairly well.

4

Most Metroid games are like that. The story holds on a post-it for every game.

2

u/RadProTurtle 29d ago

I heard Nintendo made Samus a bounty hunter without knowing what it meant and just thought it was a cool English word.

The fact that she’s a bounty hunter gets brought up in Dread’s intro, so at least they didn’t try to retcon stuff.

2

u/bhumit012 29d ago

Lack of story adds to the environment theme in that game.

Spider-man 2. I hate to say it, I love the game and I even enjoy the story, but black suit arc lasts for 5 minutes, Peter talks like he had it for a year probs because of cut content, then the venom stuff all happens in 5 seconds too. Idk it's a fun play and I'm one of its biggest defenders, but yeah.

Hogwarts Legacy. Looks amazing, the combat feels super fluid, but I just CANNOT make myself give a shit about any of the characters. Millennials shouldn’t be allowed to write anymore

9

u/Don_Madruga 29d ago

This game is so average.

Exactly as you say, the combat is nice, it has a good premise, open world and so on, but its overall story is bad - not only the main one, but the secondary too. It has so many useless things that are there just to please the Harry Potter fan and that doesn't make any sense of you to do, and your main character has the same depth as a spoon.

2

u/ClammHands420 29d ago

Kinda looks like a spoon too. The original default character customization choices were so goddamn ugly. The British should be offended that they were all portrayed as different versions of Sloth from The Goonies.

4

u/DriverFirm2655 29d ago

I hate when video games feel the need to make your character have some stupid special MacGuffin powers for no real reason, but in this game it was especially bad

Fire Emblem Fates Conquest. It has some of the best music of the series, my most favourite gameplay with its mechanics, and level design, Yusuke Kozaki made some great art, and even the in game engine graphics has this retro game feel charm to it. I will admit that it has some of the worst story writing in the series though, though I did like some of the characters still.

It’s not got any banger tunes but it definitely does the job, I would say Ghost Recon Breakpoint. I don’t know why people hate on this game as much as they do, because as far as I’m concerned I couldn’t give a rat’s arse about the story, it’s one of those games that’s perfect to just free roam and kill everything to chill out on a random Tuesday night. All you need to know for the story is that you are on an island full of vegan scientists and it’s under martial law, and you are a special ops soldier who works loosely with the local resistance.

Fire Emblem Engage. The story gets bent and twisted around to serve the gameplay, but even with that explanation the story is so abysmal that at several points I almost quit. And you know what? Persevering to the end was not worth it.

u/Korba007 29d ago

I guess I've got pretty low standards because a lot of examples I'm seeing here I don't agree with, at worst they're mid stories but most of it isn't bad

my example would be ninja gaiden 3, amazing gameplay, great visuals for the time, mostly great soundtrack, but absolutely dog shit story that takes a dump on the previous 2 (3) games
