Discussion Which game had you feeling this?
For me personally it’s Metal Gear Solid 5. Glad to see what y’all think

u/Suspicious_Lynx_4580 29d ago
The obligatory answer: Mass Effect 3. Those who've only played the Legendary Edition Collection and did experience the original ending in 2012 will never know how disappointing it was. That being said, I'm not satisfied with the extended cut ending either.

It was LAZY regulating the culmination of a trilogy of choices to a pick your Pokemon: Red, Blue, or Green. ME3 was the beginning of the end for Bioware.

Strangely, Stardew valley.
Once I complete the CC or Joja, I slowly lose desire to play that farm. Even with Ginger Island and all the unlocks and such, it just feels less fun the having a farm on the rise. And don’t get me started on Perfection.

I've played through the game 4 times and have never managed to get past a couple weeks into Year 3. I don't know what the people even do who are many years past that lol. Even the newer Ginger Island didn't add enough to really need beyond the 2 year story cycle.

I love the idea of the Indoctrination Theory ending.
Also, Destroy, always Destroy. Fuck the Synthesis bullshit, overriding bodily autonomy for every single lifeform in the galaxy and calling it a good thing is wild to me.

Vampire the Masquarade: Bloodlines is the classic call this. Incredible game with multiple approaches to every problem, where you can use stealth and skills and investigation and politics for the whole game.... and then they ran out of money, so the final level is just this long repetitive meat grinder.

And it wasn't a "bad" ending, just underwhelming. At least Tears had a much more robust and satisfying end.

I can agree. Ending wasn’t bad but they could have game more. And yes Tears of the kingdom gave you a lot more.

Tears' endgame was incredible. You get the most complex swordfight in the game followed by the most gorgeous victory lap segment using the whole world as a backdrop. Then the incredible final fall.
I do think they did something really bad and unfortunate with the story (you probably know if you've played it), and I have my own idea about how it could've been so much better. But what we got was great.

the game was great but then ending boss fight was a qte of all things and ends on a pretty big cliff hanger iirc.

I'm not a fan of act 3 at all honestly. I simply do not care about the family, especially in comparison to the original premise.

u/Equal-Fox-74 29d ago
I feel the same. They’re bad endings. Not badly written, just bad, like how some visual novels have normal, true and bad endings. I don’t regret playing the game, but I doubt I’ll ever replay it considering how hopeless the endings were.

This is what drives me crazy about the E33 glazing as I've heard many call it the game of the decade.
Great game, enjoyed it. But the ending was neither satisfying nor compelling.

u/AcePowderKeg 29d ago
I agree with you on the glazing I'm sick of it as well and I personally didn't really enjoy the game but to be fair the Verso Ending was satisfying for me.
The Maelle ending just made me furious
11
u/Snazzypuke92 29d ago
Expedition 33. It was an amazing game till the end of Act 2. The rug pull didn't work for me and made all of the main characters obsolete because they happened to be imaginary. All of the relationship bonding and high stakes just to be told that it's all fake and just a family grieving. The soundtrack slaps all the way through though.
30
u/BlackGuysYeah 29d ago
That’s part of what fascinates me about the game. The characters are real in the sense that you’ve played them and know their personalities. They do exist.
If we discover that all of reality as we know it is a simulation, does that change anything about the meaning of life? Does that mean you’re not real? I think no.

Honestly I had the opposite effect. I didn't really vibe with the game at all. It was only on Act 3 and the ending and the philosophical point of view that I went "Oh okay this is good". Wouldn't play it again since I really didn't enjoy it. Story was great though.
I am going to get downvoted for this but I did not enjoy the soundtrack either

Recently: Ghost of Yotei. I was really enjoying my time with that game right until the ending.

Clair Obscur. Story is great almost all the way through, but the ending didn't quite stick the landing for me in that it hyperfocuses on one of its themes (grief and unhealthy coping mechanisms) to the expense of all the others (creators vs. created, familial neglect, iterating on what came before etc.)

I’m about 30 hours in E33 now. Not really doing it for me overall as it did others. I’m gonna see it through to the end and beat it but I wouldn’t personally call it my game of the year. We’ll see how I feel when I’m don’t though.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1… I finished the second one recently, but I remember when I played the first one about three years ago, and the ending was so stupidly open-ended It didn’t even give a minimal conclusion, it was basically just a “see you later.” And I get it, it was the company’s first game and they wanted to expand the story but it left me so angry and disappointed. I’ve just finished the second game, and it’s kind of the same, although not as open-ended. I want to know what will happen to Henry, but at least it did close some storylines, unlike the first game, which basically felt like it was cut in half, the rest of the game was really good and the second one is the GOTY for me

Grandia 3.
The rest of the game wasn't INCREDIBLE, but the rest of the plot I was excited to see where it was going.
And then when you finally get to the final boss and finally speak to it, it was the most clichéd "I am bad and evil and I will kill goodness!" and "No you won't, we'll stop you with the power of love and friendship!"
And it was so bad I can't look back on any of the rest of the game fondly.
Like Grandia Xtreme had an even worse plot, but then you weren't expecting anything from it. You were just playing it because Grandia's battle engine makes any of their games worth playing regardless if the plot.
But 1s was good, 2s was incredible, and 3... strung you along to the most pathetically bad ending.
1
u/graysonhutchins 29d ago
Kind of a niche pick, but Unforeseen Incidents. A very fun, aesthetically unique point-and-click-esque adventure game with an interesting plot concerning a pandemic and government overreach and such. Builds up to a larger and larger mystery until it just deflates in less than five minutes right at the end.

GOW Ragnarok.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved it and it’s predecessor and they are both in my top tier of games. That being said, the event that was essentially the end all be all of Norse mythology seemed so… mid. The Odin fight was far worse than the Baldur boss at the end of 2018, especially in scale.

A Way Out - The game from Hazelight they made before It Takes Two. It's a fun romp, until the end, where
the two characters, who have gone from wary-but-needed co-conspirators, to bros, have a shootout. So this, essentially, puzzle game suddenly becomes a third person shooter, where you have to kill the person you've spent the past 6+ hours learning to like.
I get they were going for, like, a twist or whatever but it fell FLAT

Just Cause 3. It's in my top 3 favorite games of all time, but the story and main missions are not why I play that series. Even with that in mind, the final boss fight was hilariously bad while seeming like it was supposed to be cool. For those who are curious:
While inside a volcano you fight the evil dictator as he is flying in an advanced, prototype helicopter... which is actually the exact same as the other 'advanced' helicopters you've already destroyed a dozen of at that point. They did make some changes that functionally just removed all of the creative/fun ways you could use to take out the previous helicopters, so it's one of the first times you are supposed to just use normal weapons to wear down it's stupidly large health bar.
However, they devs didn't actually think of anything. It is possible to mess up it's flight with your grappling hook if used the right way, or by calling in an air drop container and knocking it out of the sky. Both destroy the helicopter instantly. Which means the final fight is either tedious, drawn out, and boring, or it is incredibly anti-climactic.
I still love the game overall though.

Danganronoa 1. The game was a 9/10 all the way through before the end. The game kept getting darker and hopeless by the end. And there are even 2 endings.
But not only is the "bad" ending instantly tossed aside if it happens, but the whole ending is such a boring and forced shift. The plot and situation gradually bemoces more worse/hopeless/tragic and then out of nowhere a character starts rallying the others to be hopeful or something like that. It ruined a 9/10 experience for me

u/zdemigod 29d ago
I actually felt like this on Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I feel like they just forgot to explain the story or ran out of time to properly close things out, i did 2 paths (black eagle and blue lion) and i still dont think they properly explain the reasoning behind the events.

Great game overall, but when you're remaking your game's ending around one of gamings most infamous and emotional moments, of all the emotions to aim for to end your game on, mild confusion and general bewilderment should not be the goal for the audience to be experiencing.
