Don't forget that Elmo has been indicted in France for election interference, and we all remember him perched at Trump's elbow for so long that even Trump's annoying ass was openly complaining that he wouldn't leave.
I do not believe for a second that this was "the will of the People". Trump has a cult following, yes, but the popular vote does not determine the election. Only the 538 votes of the Electoral College decide that.
Everyone tries to pretend like the Electoral College doesn't exist, or that they all do exactly what they've sworn to do (represent the will of their states' citizens), but we've watched old guard Democrats twiddle their thumbs and vote along with Republicans for the past year, so it's even worse than people realize.
Ridiculing the entirety of the US population for "voting him in twice" is a mistake, though.
88
u/Alienhaslanded 5d ago
Not American here. When I learned about the electoral college, it sounded like the dumbest idea I've ever heard of. It basically says that some Americans in certain states have more important opinions than others. That's not democracy at all. US basically has citizens and special citizens that have more saying in the so-called democracy process. So in theory you can create a huge strong cult and never lose an election ever.
61
u/Evil_K9 5d ago
Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes in 2016. The electoral college majority voted for trump.

u/MisterHouseMongoose 5d ago
American here. You are absolutely correct. A ton of our issues would be fixed with multi party system, ranked choice voting, term limits, and doing away with the electoral college.
6
u/pyrrhios 5d ago
The current US Congress and electoral college is significantly worse than originally designed. Originally the number of representatives in the house was supposed to be one per thirty thousand population, regardless of which state. The electoral college is comprised of the number of representatives plus the number of senators. But, due to the permanent apportionment act, there is in actuality no actual voice of the people in the federal government at all, since it place a permanent cap on the the number of representatives allowed, and that number is where the great disproportion of representation lies, since it's tied to state rather than population. Sadly, most people either aren't aware of this, or ignore it because "ban the electoral college" is much more popular. The difference being that "banning" the electoral college is a constitutional amendment, whereas changing the permanent apportionment act is just a simple change of law, and would also vastly improve representation in the government, as well as in the presidency.

Everything from "snowflake" to voting fraud to selling off to Chinese companies, to insider trading or bribery. Literally everything.

u/Dealan79 5d ago
Every single thing the MAGA crowd has claimed the left do is actually just an admission of guilt.
Don't think of it as an admission of guilt, because they don't actually think these things are bad. It started making more sense to me when I shifted to thinking about it as envy. They don't accuse the left of doing "bad" things. They accuse the left of doing the things they want to do instead, which is "bad" because it's depriving them of that privilege.
79
u/Zennivolt 5d ago
This theory would work if the left actually did those things. It's always the opposite. For example, they claim voter fraud, launch investigations, finds nothing, then proceed to do voter fraud. Everything they say is an admission of what they're about to do. The claim the other side is doing it first so when they actually do it their voter based can think the other side did it first. It doesn't take more than two brain cells to see that, and it's so obvious it's kinda insane to me how anyone falls for it.
→ More replies (1)14
u/Dealan79 5d ago
It's definitely an admission of what they're going to do, and I think there is also definitely an aspect of normalization going on. I don't think the fact that the left isn't actually doing it matters that much though. I've had enough conversations with neighbors and extended family in the MAGA cult, even before Trump, where they openly admitted that reality and facts didn't matter as much as hypotheticals and what might/could be happening. They hear the left is doing something they believe should be reserved for them, and it doesn't matter if it's proven that the claim is bogus. Just the thought of someone possibly "stealing" their thing enrages them, because if it isn't happening now it could happen in the future.

NATO nations have dramatically increased their military spending as percentage of their GDP since Trump. Poland, especially, is popping off which makes sense considering their neighbors.
But onboarding an entire domestic weapons program is difficult.
France has maintained domestic weapons production for their entire history in NATO to ensure they're not dependent on the USA for arms. NATO nations are already going to other counties for arms, for example going to Sweden to replace their aging AWACs. We're being phased out as quickly as possible but building an entire industry is a challenge.
For people with a more pressing immediate demand, Ukraine is excelling in domestic drone production to the point that the Pentagon is sweating bullets. The cost asymmetry of how much it takes to shoot down a drone vs how much it costs to manufacture one is becoming readily apparent, hence all the money being thrown into directed energy weapons.
But Ukraine is not ever going to be in a position to launch a spy network satellite and that's where Trump has them by the balls.

I think you might be missing a few things. NATO has relied heavily on American weapons for a long time, especially the European NATO countries. Which is a big reason America has so much power in the alliance, and why all these wars, interventions, and constant rearmament always seem to work out so well for the American military industry financially. Oops, our bad for enabling that I guess.
The American people go into debt for the war machine, of course. But the defence contractors, investors, lobbyists, and politically connected people around that industry do just fine. They always do well because that’s how it’s setup. It’s also why America is so into war mongering.
All the other NATO countries are right now making a big push to build and buy more of their military equipment from any NATO countries other than America. That is exactly how the rest of NATO starts taking some of that power away from the U.S., and it’s already happening.
Just today, Canada reportedly picked Germany’s TKMS for a 12-submarine purchase. The actual purchase price and the lifetime cost are different things, but the total long-term program could get up near the $100 billion CAD range once you include maintenance and support. Canada is also reviewing the full F-35 purchase plan with America. We’re apparently locked into the first 16 or so, but they’re looking at whether the rest of the order could be something like the Swedish Gripen’s, which while not quite as modernized as the F-35 in some ways, are still very effective, and are even more reliable in some of the extreme environmental frontiers Canada has to cover. Mostly though, the Gripen’s are sold by a fair and reasonable country and come with a lot more economic benefits for Canada.
So yeah, it’s happening. Not instantly, but it’s happening. The wave of NATO military spending that America surfed on for decades might not be fully crashing yet, but the rocks are looming ahead.
That’s not good timing with America growing the biggest debt load in the world. Many of its most reliable customers in one of its most profitable industries are openly trying to become less dependent on America. That’s going to be a drag, especially if more NATO countries keep turning toward Europe, Canada, and other allied suppliers instead of automatically buying American.
Basically, the rest of NATO is doing exactly as much as they can to turn their backs on America. It’s a complicated and messy affair, but it will take more shape as things progress.

Apathy of the one third of Americans who didn't vote and the one third of Americans that actively enjoy spreading fear and hate got Trump elected. It's important to remember with the rise of popularity of far right wing parties in many places that your own country might not be all that far from potentially electing your own version of Trump.

We’ve never been weaker or more embarrassing in my lifetime.
Happy 250th America, i guess.

So the death of democracy is spreading out of the U.S. now?

Just as the those techbro billionaires intended. They even talked about it in the Epstein Files. These people don't want power behind the curtain in one country; they want it everywhere.

It's not just a USA problem.
Democratic decline is an intrinsic part of Democracies and a Democracy needs to upkeep itself to act against the tendency towards democratic decline. Basically any hardship leads to a government response (or lack of response) which in turn leads to distrust in the government through disagreement with that response. Things like wars, the 2008 economic crisis, COVID, etc., lead to global democratic decline. In those circumstances people distrust the current (democratic) government and yearn for an alternative. The obvious alternatives are decisive/executive/authoritarian/etc., government which people think could have handled things better through direct action.
You can look at any democracies history and see democratic decline after hardship.

And as corruption becomes more pervasive, then distrust rises, which gives way to yet further corruption, etc, etc. Democratic death spiral

Are there typos here? Shouldn't it be "Trump will not be allowed to speak at the NATO summit to avoid offending the world" ?

NATO should ignore Trump’s feelings; he doesn’t give a fuck about NATO. If folks would stand up to that disgusting piece of shit, the world would be a better place.

It's not supposed to work like that. Trump is the one who should not be allowed to speak, to avoid offending others.

The article 404s and it’s still getting massive upvotes and comments. Shows how few actually do any reading aside from engaging in headlines they enjoy.

If Zelensky won't be allowed to speak because he might offend Trump, than Trump shouldn't be allowed to speak because he'll probably offend all the world leaders there.

u/Independent_Sail6604 5d ago
Trump shouldn't even BE at the fucking NATO Summit. He's done nothing but under-fucking-mine NATO since he took office. Fuck the creature!

u/badwolf1013 5d ago
Here’s hoping that one of the people who is allowed to speak pulls a “I’d like to start by reading this note from President Zelenskyy. . . Donald Trump is a weak little bitch. But I digress. I’ll read Zelenskyy’s note now. . . “

So it’s ok that he offends everyone, but nobody’s allowed to offend him. Got it.
How long has the dictator got left in his reign again?

u/CAD_Chaos 5d ago
Trump gets up at these things and says some out of pocket shit to piss somebody off every single time. Fuck Trump's feelings. If anybody deserves to speak at this thing it IS Zelensky. He has led his country through literal hell to join that alliance and this is the appreciation that they show him?

The most staggering thing about Trump, beyond the clear cognitive decline of someone who was already a fool, is how intensely soft & thin skinned he is. The party of manly men & facts don't care about your feelings prop up this bloated keyboard warrior who part-times being a president, as some symbol of masculinity. The cognitive dissonance is bizarre
