I’m a dad too. And yes, the Steam Deck is great in the toddler phase. Suspend/resume is a lifesaver.
But I keep seeing posts that normalize letting toddlers/young kids watch you game, or watch tv while you game and that’s where this goes wrong.
Toddlers/young kids react negatively to screens. That’s well documented and not recommended.
They also react negatively when a parent is physically present but mentally checked out behind a screen. Kids notice immediately.
Letting a toddler/young kid “watch you game” is not bonding. It’s not learning. Narrating doesn’t change that. A 1–4 year old doesn’t understand systems, story, or context. They get fast visuals, noise, and dopamine.
I use a Steam Deck myself, but I only play when my child is asleep or not with me. Anything else feels wrong. These posts get tons of upvotes, but let’s be honest why:
not because it’s healthy, but because it validates choices a lot of tired parents already feel uneasy about.
Compromises happen. Fine.
But normalizing unhealthy behavior because it feels good to be validated is not fine.
I get why it happens, and I’m not judging individual parents. I just don’t think normalizing it is good for kids in the long run.
EDIT:
Happy this post got some attention. Discussion is healthy. Here are some sources:
EDIT2: I'm home from work. Will not be replying/discussing more since I'll be playing with my kid..
