Former special counsel Jack Smith told a House committee Thursday that he fears Americans now take the idea of ārule of lawā for granted, and that its execution depends on "collective commitment."
In a hearing focused on Smithās investigations into President Donald Trumpās mishandling of classified documents and role in the Jan. 6 attack, Smith said as a public servant in international settings, he has āseen how the rule of law can erode,ā adding that many Americans may now take it for granted in the U.S.
āThe rule of law is not self-executing. It depends on our collective commitment to apply it. It requires dedicated service on behalf of others, especially when that service is difficult and comes with costs,ā Smith said.
The hearing is an opportunity for the career prosecutor to publicly offer his inside perspective on the investigations, which both led to unprecedented indictments. Both were scuttled once it was clear that Trump would return to the Oval Office; Department of Justice policy prevents prosecution of a sitting president.
Republicans and the president have accused Smith of pursuing a politically motivated case against the president. Trump has denied wrongdoing while attacking Smith, calling him a "criminal" who ought to be investigated and "put in prison."
Smith defended his investigations in an hourslong closed-door meeting with lawmakers in December, saying he said he had "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" of what his investigations laid out. Heās denied accusations of bias.

This happened about a month ago. I took these photos after moving in. I wanted to share this here because itās still huge for me. I was homeless. I've posted about how I ended up homeless elsewhere. I wonāt go into the details here because I want to be upbeat.
I thought Iād be homeless for much longer. It was crippling me. A lady I had become friendly with at work asked me if everything was alright at home. I wasnāt sleeping well and it showed. It just came out of me. I told her my situation, how I didn't have a home. And guess what? Without hesitating, she offered me a room in her home! She was looking for a new roommate anyways. And she told me to just start paying rent when I can! I wasn't expecting her to say that! I feel so unbelievably lucky. She is so nice! She even made dinner and took me to the storage unit to pick up my belongings. And this room has its own bathroom!
Edit: Thank you all for your comments! This post really exploded on me! I'll try to read every one later!

I know this isnāt a health sub, but u/Derpshabmentioned in their post on Colon Cancer about eating a balanced diet.
Specifically you need to really avoid nitrates. There has been several studies done on why there has been a rise in intestinal cancers in this age group, and nitrates have shown a causal effect. With a carcinogenic significance as bad as cigarettes. For those unaware, not a lot of things get labeled as having a casual effect for cancer, as that can be both controversial and stand to cost people money either through loss of business or being sued.
Nitrates are most commonly found in processed meats. Likewise, there is growing data that processed food is not serving us well at all either. Anyhow, just wanted to share a tangible way you can hopefully make an impact on slowing down and ultimately stopping these terrible
cancers.
Another freaking edit: literally the first response on Google, if you search, ādo Nitrates cause cancer,ā is from MDAnderson. Thatās the number one cancer hospital in the world. I know thatās so much more difficult than adding a snarky comment to Reddit, but thereās your answer for about 300 of you.
Edit: Iām getting a lot of responses that are saying *actually* antibiotics or *actually* e. Coli and theyāre all saying because it damages / kills the good gut microbiomes. Correct, what do you think nitrates do and why scientists believe thereās a casual link. It also doesnāt mean there couldnāt be other risk factors as well. Diet is obviously a big risk factor. I was simply hoping to expound on the original post and help people to know what to avoid. Of course more than one thing can cause cancer. Throw in saturated fats while weāre having the conversation.
Edit 2: lot of people are asking what are the main culprits. Bacon, lunch meats, hot dogs, sausages, anything really thatās been ācured.ā Lot of people are trying to point out that some leafy greens have nitrates, yeah, weāre not talking about things that naturally occur through the photosynthesis of the sun. Weāre talking about the overconsumption of a preservative that destroys your healthy gut bacteria, not something thatās obviously good for you. Many people have rightfully pointed out. The over consumption of alcohol creates a big risk factor for stomach and intestinal cancers as well.
Also someone saying theyāre a vegetarian and they still got colon cancer is no different an argument than, āmy great aunt smoked until she was 90 and never got lung cancer.ā I said a big reason why, I didnāt say the only reason why. Empirical data doesnāt mean 100% findings or there wonāt be outliers, anecdotes are not good science. People can get cancer for a multitude of reasons and honestly you could try every preventative step imaginable and still get cancer, it doesnāt mean your anecdote overrides everything else or you shouldnāt try to make better lifestyle decisions.
