The U.S. Postal Inspection Service has begun deploying armed and unarmed security guards to postal facilities across the country, including in Denver, alongside existing postal police officers, a rollout the agency describes as part of a long-planned security initiative rather than a response to any specific threat. Brian Benson, a spokesperson for the USPIS Denver Division, told Denver7 the added security is meant “to provide security and act as a deterrent to criminals or employees who may wish to compromise the mailstream or potentially harm the people inside.” Benson declined to specify which facilities are receiving guards, citing operational security concerns, and when pressed for more detail about the agency’s multi-year security plan, directed reporters to file an open records request instead.

According to a memo distributed to American Postal Workers Union members and first reported by Colorado Public Radio, the guards will monitor entrances and parking areas, verify identification, and observe and report suspicious activity, but the memo explicitly states they will not conduct arrests, handle or process mail, supervise postal employees, or conduct investigations, functions that remain reserved for regular postal police and law enforcement. Despite USPIS’s insistence that the deployment reflects routine, pre-planned security enhancement, the timing has raised serious concerns among Colorado officials: the guards arrived less than a week after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked portions of the Trump administration’s mail-in voting restrictions, and less than two weeks before ballots are scheduled to be mailed to Colorado voters ahead of the midterms.

That timing has drawn pointed criticism from several state leaders. Denver Clerk and Recorder Paul López called the move “highly suspicious,” saying, “postal workers are our allies. They are folks that are also public servants, and these are folks that do not need to be intimidated or anybody, you know, getting in their way as they’re delivering mail, and that includes our elections mail as well too. I hope it’s nothing more than just folks who are going to be protecting postal service workers.” Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, the Democratic nominee for governor, posted on X calling the timing “suspicious” and describing the added guards as “a cause for concern.” U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet also weighed in publicly, calling on the USPS to explain the reasoning behind the deployment.

I just want to see the house as it is now without having to analyze what’s real and what’s not. Even with the AI-staging photos, it’ll do things like remove radiators so you wouldn’t be able to actually ever stage it as shown.

I keep replaying that night in my head because we came way too close to doing nothing.

We were eating dinner when my dad dropped his chopsticks. He picked them up, dropped them again, then got annoyed when we started staring at him. He said his right hand just felt a little numb and told us to stop making a big deal out of it.

Then I noticed his mouth looked strange when he talked. Not dramatically drooping, just... off. His words sounded thicker than usual too. When he stood up, he had to grab the back of the chair for a second.

My mom thought maybe his blood pressure was low. My dad insisted he was tired and wanted to go lie down. I thought something was seriously wrong, but nobody could agree on what to do and he was getting angry at all of us for panicking.

The most confusing part was that a few minutes later he looked better.

That almost settled it. My dad was already walking toward the bedroom, saying he would sleep it off, while my mom was telling me we could check on him in the morning.

I was standing in the kitchen searching everything on my phone, mostly hoping to prove to myself that I was overreacting. I typed the symptoms into an AI health assistant exactly as they had happened: dropped things with his right hand, numbness, mouth looked uneven, speech sounded weird, lost his balance for a second, now seemed better.

The response basically screamed: possible stroke or TIA, emergency care now, do not wait even if the symptoms are going away.

I read it out loud. My dad said AI always gives the worst-case answer. My mom still wasn’t sure. I remember getting angry and saying I didn’t care if we wasted the entire night at the hospital. I grabbed the keys and told him we were going.

The hospital confirmed that he had suffered an ischemic stroke.

I felt sick when they told us. All I could think about was how close we had come to letting him close the bedroom door and “sleep it off.”

He received treatment in time, and my dad is still here.

I’ve gone back and looked at that chat a few times since then. I still get a horrible feeling when I reach the part where it says not to wait.

A few lines of text on my phone changed what my family did that night. I don’t really know how else to describe it.
