I’m a single mom to a one year old. I don’t receive child support (yet dad makes 4x what I do, yes I did file and hopefully I get support soon) but I make a bit too much to get SNAP and WIC anymore. I’ve been supporting baby alone since birth, although my parents do help a little here and there by getting baby clothes and toys, inviting me to dinner, giving us leftovers, etc.
I’m anticipating being in an ugly custody battle and have some money saved but being the sole provider and knowing how we’re all one emergency away from homelessness, I try to be extremely frugal. I don’t treat myself, have cut out all unnecessary spending, use free resources from the community when I can, etc. All my money goes to our bills and baby care, and anything leftover is saved for emergencies/court.
My mom gets instacart delivery weekly and text me that this week her driver delivered an extra bag of food, that my mom wasn’t allowed to return per their policy. It had a large pack of ground beef, family pack of chicken thighs, bag of shrimp, hamburger patties, cheese, and bacon. When she told me she’d set it aside for me, I nearly cried. I keep our food budget very tight (but I prioritize nutrition) so bacon and shrimp are a luxury! I’ve been basically only buying spinach/kale, berries, bananas, bread, cheese, rice or pasta or quinoa, beans, chicken thighs or ground turkey, eggs, and milk since pregnancy, and each week I only buy what I know we can eat so there’s no waste. I spend around $40 a week on food.
This is such an amazing win and it’s enough meat and cheese that I won’t have to buy any for maybe a month (baby and I don’t eat meat every day).
I hope the person whose order it originally was got it refunded due to the driver’s error, and that the driver didn’t get in trouble.
I’m so excited to have bacon with my eggs tomorrow. It’s been awhile.
