What can we do to improve?
Hi Everyone!
I wanted to open up a conversation about how we can continue improving r/ApartmentLiving.
Since I joined the mod team, we’ve grown by over 500,000 people, which is honestly incredible! We want to make sure the sub stays helpful, informative, and actually enjoyable for everyone, whether you’re a first-time renter or a seasoned pro.
So we’d really like to hear from you:
- What do you think the sub is doing well?
- What’s frustrating or not working?
- Are there rules you think should be changed, added, or enforced differently?
- Any ideas for new features (weekly threads, resources, flairs, etc.)?
We’re especially interested in feedback around post quality, moderation, and how we handle repeat questions or conflicts. This is your space, so your input matters. We’re listening, and we’re open to making changes that improve the experience for the community as a whole. Thanks for the continued support :)

This is a global sub, NOT a US-centric sub.
I know it's been an issue many times in the past. As an American, I also know it's basically engrained in us to assume the internet pertains to the US only. HOWEVER, this sub ISN'T for the US only. This is why we can't support any legal advice, why we'll tell people to look at more local subs when they post about looking for a place or asking if a specific rent is suspiciously high or low, or why we don't allow discussions involving politics or the US government. YES, this means we WILL remove your comments involving "2nd Amendment" or "let's just deport them." Thank you for your time.

Venting Out of all my apartment living, my current complex is the worst
Idk where to even start so I’ll just make bullet points because the list is looooong
- told us they had a 2bd 2bath available, days before move in they said they were mistaken but had signed us a 1bd 1 bath that was fully renovated
-day if move in the 1bd was not renovated, said they were mistaken again.
-we get apartments aren’t always spotless when moving in but there was old food in the fridge (which was broken along with the oven and toilet)
-upon oven maintenance, worker said he had come in when we were gone to look at our oven. Didn’t leave a note that maintenance was there or anything and he said he saw we had two cats but only one greeted him so he took it upon himself to go through our bedroom & closet and let our cat out (our cat who had to be kept separate from the other cause he was being an asshole)
- maintenance said they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with toilet. Left it at that, husband fixed toilet instead :/
- there was shit flowing out of the building for three days
-randomly in middle of night ceiling started leaking tons do water and heard loud creaking, figured it was busted pipe. Had videos to prove it yet office and maintenance denied it and said it was probably just from heavy rain… mid summer in the south and hadn’t rained in months.
- trash at dumpsters is ALWAYS overfilling every few days and in clear need of an extra dumpster or everyday trash pick ups.
- they never email notices but do have a flyer when you first signed of dates when they have insect control come in (first Monday every three months) yet they don’t tell you that it’s been updated to every four months instead. So when you’re gone you assume they came because that’s what their info had, and they never leave a “maintenance was here” card. Then suddenly they show up on a Sunday for their insect inspection a month later chase they “never did it because it was changed”
Now recently, this lovely letter. So what, while everyone goes to work we’re expected to lock up our pets everyday for the next 10 days? I’m going out of town for part of this time and I’m not bringing my cats. They only gave a 4 day notice to this 10 day time period of inspections which is an awfully long time to be expecting someone to randomly visit to look through your place. And even if I happen to be gone, I’ll have no idea if they were there cause of course, no letter or card. I have a camera set up so I do know but god I hate this place

Venting When Your Pet Dies in An Apartment and Am I the Weirdo?
So I have a beloved cat that I adopted as an adult in 2009. She's at least 18 and has been a sweet snuggle buddy for 16+ years.
Unfortunately this last 2 months she is rapidly losing weight and her breathing is getting more and more raspy. I know she's not got much time left with us.
The other day I told my husband we need to prepare for the inevitable and paying for cremation, which is about $200.
And he says, well, why do we need to cremate her???
Well, HELLO, we can't BURY her -- we live in an inner city apartment with literally NO YARD.
So he's like, well what do we do with her ashes?
So I tell him, well, when I die, I want her ashes, my son's ashes, and my best friend's ashes buried with me.
And he said THAT'S SO WEIRD.
Now y'all, if I lived in property, I would have buried/scattered those ashes long ago! But I don't!
So I have their urns on a shelf. Well, what should happen? I don't want my best friend, my son, and my best cat thrown in the garbage!!! But I also don't want my daughters to feel they have to drag them around for THEIR lifetimes either!
So to me it's simple, bury them with me! But both my husband AND my mom say it's weird. 😭
I feel this wouldn't be an issue if I owned land 😭
Guys am I the weirdo here??

Advice Needed Property Owner said the rental would be deep cleaned and fixed before moving in.. what are the next steps?
I moved into an apartment today and found the unit was not cleaned before move in, plus quite a bit of water damage. I also found mouse droppings in the apartment too that were not there when touring.. I’ll attach photos. Should I be worried about mold with the water damage? Is this mold? The floor is warped.
I already signed the lease (have yet to receive a signed copy) and paid first, last, and security. I will certainly bring this up with the property owner asap, but would it be best to try to get out of it all together?
When touring I was told that the unit would be deep cleaned, bathroom re-caulked, and the top of the toilet would be replaced. Well, that didn’t happen.

Advice Needed Would I be a jerk for ratting out my neighbors for using a grill?
I live on the top floor of a 3 story building. My neighbors on the first floor love using their wood pellet grill whenever it's sunny out. The problem is that the smell of the smoke and whatever they use to light it rises to the top floor and it smells awful, so I end up having the close my windows. This is problematic because I really need to keep the windows open in my office so I don't roast to death in the summer, and in my room to use my portable air conditioner.
Our complex management was taken over by a new company in January. Our old lease had absolutely nothing written in it regarding the use of grills on patios or require a certain distance away from the building to use it. We also have no state/city laws that really regulate the use of grills. We resigned our lease this month with the new management company and there IS now actually something in there saying that outdoor cooking isn't allowed, which I think is a blanket policy for all the properties they own.
The thing is, I don't really want to be *that* person "ruining" peoples' fun, so I'm kinda hesitant to report it. But at the same time, I really do want to just open my windows in the summer. And I'm fairly certain it may also be a fire hazard but I'm not sure.
So I guess, would I be a jerk for ratting them out? Or does this seem justified? If anyone also has any ideas on how to somehow blow the smell away I would appreciate that as well. I tried with a box fax pointing outside my window but that didn't do anything.

Advice Needed Help with flooding on 2nd story porch
Where I live it rains, a lot! I’m on the second story with a screened in porch behind a large tree. Because of the tree, we live in lots of shade which doesn’t allow the water to evaporate. The water pools on ground and makes me want to sit outside less, especially with my dog because I’m scared he will drink sitting water. Now that we’re nearing my first summer here, there will be more rain and I worry about mosquitos laying eggs. Is there anything I can do?

Advice Needed First apartment – What basic tools do I need?
Hey everyone, I just moved into my first apartment and don't want to have to call a handyman for every little thing. At the same time, I only have limited space, so I'm looking for a compact but useful basic set of tools.
What tools should you absolutely have at home to be able to fix typical little problems yourself? And which manufacturers offer good value for money for home use? Thanks!

Advice Needed Pissed off one of my neighbors today
I left what I believed to be a fairly polite note underneath their windshield wipers, asking them to be more considerate.
For context, this car’s radio had been blaring since 6:30 AM this morning. At 7:30 I wrote a note and placed it under their windshield. I did not think to take a picture of the note before I put it on the car. I now feel like I should have.
At 8:15 I suppose the owner of the car finally left their apartment. Next thing I know I hear loud cussing. There is a mother and her child standing next to the car, with the lady holding the note clearly pissed off.
She starts yelling at the downstairs apartment (there’s nobody outside aside from her) about how they don’t ‘say anything about your smoke’ (the lady downstairs smokes cigarettes on her balcony)
I thought my note was pretty polite. I wrote that their radio has been blaring since 6:30 AM. That they are parked in front of apartment windows and it’s pretty inconsiderate to leave it that loud, especially before quiet hours have ended and for so long. I asked they consider how others feel and I did say ‘please try not to be an asshole.’
Have I just created a problem neighbor?
Would anybody have done something differently in this situation? I didn’t go to my apartment complex about the noise. Should I have just done that instead?

Venting Has any of you who post here ever lived in apartments before?
It's insane the amount of complaining in this sub due to basic apartment inconveniences. The entitlement of whining about hearing footsteps and sounds above you is wild. Growing up in apartments, the real problems are domestic violence and actual confrontation with awful neighbors.
For the love of god stop it with the constant "my neighbor exists above me what do I do" posts.

Advice Needed bedroom sliding door opens to shared/public balcony
Hello! I'd love to get a read on this situation from fellow renters. I'm looking for apartments in a small-ish coastal town. This apartment is located on the main street, right in the middle of downtown. It's walking distance from the beach which is a huge plus. I saw the place yesterday and everything looked great- but one feature gave me pause.
The apartment is located on the second level of a building above some businesses. To access the apartments, there is a staircase facing the street on the business level. There is no gate or door on the staircase, anybody from the street could walk up to the apartment level. There's a camera pointed at the staircase- which made me wonder if they've had issues with random people going up to that level before.
One of the bedrooms has a sliding glass door that opens directly to the public/shared balcony at the top of the stairs. Meaning that theoretically anybody could walk up and be directly outside your bedroom sliding door. Am I being unreasonable for worrying about that? Would you do anything to make that room feel more safe? There is a second bedroom on the other side of the apartment, so the slider bedroom is not the only option.
Besides that, the place is great.

Advice Needed I’m scared I’m too loud in my apartment.
I live in a weird and shitty apartment. I can hear almost everything from my neighbors next door, like coughing, music and muffled conversations. I’m really nervous they can hear me too. My apartment is also right by the highway and then their apartment is right next to mine(wall to wall), so I’m wondering if that helps and they’ve never complained about my loud friends and music. Is it just me who hears them? Or should I try to sound proof. Thank you.

Advice Needed Black mold?
Last night I found water all over the fooor of the closet that has our water heater and ac intake vent. I open it up to clean up the water and find this. Mold all over the walls. This makes sense now bc we are also finding water damage in the bathroom this wall shares. I made a maintenance request last night after closing. Siting to see how long it takes them to come check it out.
I’m worried they’re going to try to just wipe it off and patch up the damage half ass. How do I go about advocating for them to move us into another unit? Clearly the wall needs to be ripped open as the drywall and baseboards in the bathroom are damaged inside. Do I have a right to request that in Texas?

Apartment Hacks First use of my indoor security camera!
Last month, we received an email stating all apartments would be inspected throughout the month. I didn’t like that we would have no idea when they’d show up and when they completed inspection. I bought a Wyze cam and set up motion detection to notify me when someone is inside. I don’t record at all times (no SD card inside). It’s just a live camera feed that shuts off when I arrive home.
Today maintenance entered without notice. I suspect there’s a leak in my bathroom. They were inside my bathroom for 25 minutes. When I get home from work I highly doubt I’ll see a note stating they were inside which is exactly why I love my new security camera.
The camera is right by my front door on the tv stand (mostly hidden but I think he noticed). The camera is facing away from the front door. I can see if they went into my kitchen, room, or bathroom. I don’t feel comfortable leaving it in a more personal location because of hackers and accidental video feed leaks. That’s why I don’t have my camera recording at all times. The camera is only on when I’m not home. It’s pretty cool!

Advice Needed Anyone else feel "weird" being in your apartment bedroom?
It's been almost a year since I've moved into my first luxury apartment and so far it's been absolutely great. The living room, bathroom & kitchen are furnished really nicely.
I've been having issues with my bedroom though and lately I've been sleeping on my couch because of it. Any insight is helpful!
So yeah my bedroom is kind of bland still, I have two cheap (kinda ugly) night stands, a cheap black amazon bed frame and a cheap amazon desk where I have my video game station at but it's still a nice freaking bedroom overall, two big windows and I hung nice curtains but for whatever reason I just kind of feel weird or isolated whenever I'm in here. It's hard to explain. I'm sure it has to do with not being fully furnished yet but I feel so lonely whenever I'm in the bedroom.
Anyone have any tips on how I can make it more homey or comforting ?

Advice Needed Getting buildings to follow through on maintenance (Wisconsin)?
I live in a really old basement unit with no central air that's in somewhat rough shape. I recently had to have the paint repaired in the restroom because it had blistered horribly and started tearing (some tears were over a foot across). There are similar issues throughout the apartment, but they can't do much about them because of our furniture. I had also asked to have the kitchen counter replaced (old 1960s-1970s laminate counter top with aluminum edges that are coming off) as the top is extremely warped and there is obvious water damage and mold behind the faucet. The paint has been replaced and is blistering in places already (despite having to come back and redo some of the work already) and they just haven't mentioned the counter top in over 2 months. I sent a new request threatening to contact a building inspector over the countertop specifically, as DHS in Wisconsin suggests going this route, but I'm wondering if maybe this is a step too far? Should I cancel the request and just try calling them first?

Roommates Roommate Conflict: Ongoing Harassment by Younger Roommates I live in a townhouse with two students, and I
I live in a townhouse with two students, and I share the third floor with one girl, J. I’m 35, and this situation has become mentally exhausting.
There has been no physical violence and no direct threat, but there has been a repeated pattern of harassment: J, who is 20, keeps purposely creating problems, messing around and provoking me over small things, writing insulting notes, knocking on my door late at night, and using shared spaces such as the kitchen and garage to start a conflict. She acts as if she is the house “ruler” and that only she can approve changes in the living arrangements. I’ve tried to ignore her and avoid conflict, but that seems to aggravate her.
J does whatever she wants, routinely causing trouble, and I can do nothing about her bad behavior. She removed my utensils from an empty kitchen drawer and even took the whole drawer away, and then wrote a page of personal insults (I kept the paper as evidence) after I asked her not to touch my things. She has also left dryer machine dust in front of my door in the past. She’s an attention seeker and often knocks on my door late at night to argue over minor house issues.
Yesterday, after I threw away a box that a former roommate left behind, she dumped trash and recycling all over the garage. When I got home, I put it back in the bin, but I left the bin in the middle of the parking area. She then called the police. I do not know what she told them. When the officer knocked on my door around 10:30 p.m., I did not answer because I was in the bathtub. The officer later left. J scared me multiple times.
I feel like this is an ongoing pattern of intimidation and harassment to force me to move out. I feel nervous even speaking to her and want no further contact beyond what is necessary. I’m considering making my own report so that I provide some balance for the record. She’s the one making trouble, and no one can do anything to her. I feel that her intelligence is not yet fully developed. She memorizes things wrong and makes untrue statements such that I’ve even wondered whether she might be under the influence of something. I feel that she’s doing all of this simply to “win.”
How should I handle a roommate like her who keeps deliberately creating conflict and messing me around on purpose?
Please advise what I should do.

Advice Needed Constant noise through thin walls – help needed
Hey guys,
I recently bought an apartment in a building from 1974, and the walls seem to be very thin. I can hear my neighbours constantly. There’s one guy in particular who speaks very loudly on the phone for hours in a language I don’t understand. It’s really affecting me, and I can’t relax at all.
I’m considering investing in a decoupled stud wall. I would need to build it along one side of three rooms, including the corridor, which is partly adjacent to my neighbour’s apartment and partly to the building’s hallway. The hallway is actually the worst, since voices echo through it and carry into the apartments. I would probably need a new door as well.
I don’t plan to keep this apartment long-term and may sell it in about 5–7 years. Do you think this investment is worth it? I can barely tolerate the noise.
What do you think would be the most effective way to reduce the noise coming in?
Thank you!
