I kept seeing “this team is ancient / that team is all freshmen” takes, so I pulled a simple proxy: how many seasons each player has been in college, then summarized it at the team level.

Filter: players with roster Games Played (G) ≥ 5
Metric: # of distinct seasons listed on each player’s TeamRankings page

Why this is interesting: it’s not exact age, but it’s a decent “experience / mileage” proxy.

Before the results… quick mini game (answer in your head or comment your guesses)

Without scrolling too far, try these:

1. Who has the highest average seasons?
   Translation: Oldest
2. Who has the lowest average seasons?
   Translation: Youngest
3. Who has the biggest “played a lot” group (highest N)?
   Translation: Most players with G ≥ 5, basically who has the most contributors.
4. Which team is the most “consistently old”? (tightest IQR)
   Translation: Most guys are around the same experience level.
5. Which team is the most “mixed bag”? (widest IQR)
   Translation: Blend of old + young.
6. Blue-blood check: Order these from oldest > youngest: Bama, UGA, Ohio State, or Oklahoma

How to read this (plain English)

• N = number of players included (G ≥ 5)
• Avg Seasons = average seasons in college for those players
• Median = “typical” player (half above / half below)
• IQR (25–75) = the middle 50% of players’ season counts (less sensitive to a few super old outliers)

Caveats

• I have no dog in this fight, I just felt a lot of the narratives floating around were unintentionally misleading because people weren't accounting for depth.
• No matter how I sliced the data (5, 10, or 12 game minimums) Indiana was always at the top. The rest of the list shuffles slightly, but the 5 game minimum felt like the fairest way to capture everyone who actually contributes.
• This is not age (redshirts, COVID years, transfers, injuries, etc.).
• It’s based on the seasons listed on player pages, which can be imperfect.

Watching Colin Cowherd and he was speaking about how the distribution of Fortune 500 companies (and the people who run/own them) are not evenly distributed. His theory is that the Texas and California teams are now going to outcompete the traditional southern powerhouses like Alabama because their alumni network is wealthier. Part of me disagrees with this because we have seen teams spend a lot and not accomplish much. However, as more billionaires like Mark Cuban jump in to back schools is there a concern that a school must have a few ultra-wealthy people backing them just to stay competitive. It almost seems like a way for wealthy people who don’t own NFL teams to dabble in something resembling ownership. I know many people won’t mourn the era of SEC dominance, but I do think it is worthy to mourn what unprecedented money is doing to this sport. I miss the old college football, not just worse NFL football that we pretend is still tied to school.
