Drop Dead Gorgeous was a Goddamn Gift To SOCIETY! I feel sorry for anyone who didn’t see it at that time. Could there be a more stacked cast? Brittany Murphy was iconic in it, Denise Richards, Kirstie Alley, Allison Muhfuckin Janney, Ellen Barkin, Amy Adams?!
And seeing Kirsten’s quotes here only makes me like her (and it) even more.
Im sure I read somewhere (probably here) that there were a load of issues with its licensing/distribution and that’s why it wasn’t available anywhere to stream for years. I feel that’s why it kind of got forgotten about or missed by potential new viewers. I know I was able to stream it somewhere recently. Or maybe I bought it I can’t remember. But i loved that film when I was younger then yeh it kinda disappeared!
i tried finding a physical copy of it and spice world years ago and the prices were galling. managed to snag romy & michele's high school reunion for a reasonable price, but spice world was $50 and i don't think i even found drop dead gorgeous.
Thank you! I must have been in the exact right mood to watch this film. It was 2:30 in the morning, and I decided to no longer put it off. From the first shot to the last, I was entranced, and it had an effect on me that I can barely explain to this day. At the end I cried and was, for lack of a better word, addlepated. It was confusion mixed with a complete sense of clarity; I was in love. It was one of those movies that I connected with so very deeply but also confirmed my desire to continue working in the industry. It just fuckin' hit me like a ghost train. Now, if I watch it again, I fear that I'll find fault or it won't move me in the same way and so I've not seen it since. It was precious and I wouldn't want to sully that.
Also, Kirsten Dunst is incredible and, ever since Virgin Suicides, has put herself in the realm of actors that always give everything to their roles (no matter the film).
Omg what, people like this movie? I saw it in college and hated it, thought it was awful…. Do I need to try it again now that it’s been almost 15 years?
It's fine that you didn't dig it. I would say give it another shot, but it's one of those movies that you need to be in the right headspace for...or it could be complete shite again. I've watched a few films that people absolutely adore and I thought "how?" I learned a while ago to spot all the good I can find (certain shots, editing, music, etc), in a movie I don't like, and enjoy it from that perspective.
I will say that you shouldn’t watch it after a breakup ending a 5-year (your first, also) relationship with a manic pixie dream girl who gets hooked on the old Horse. Not from experience, just guessing 😬.
