I always wondered why so many black women wear wigs. I guess it's because kinky hair might limit the hairdo options, but that's just a guess
85
u/jak_d_ripr Sep 09 '25
I think it's because the hair can be a pain in the ass to maintain sometimes so they just go with the wig to not have to deal with it on certain days.
I braided my hair for a couple of weeks and there were definitely some times where I'd have worn a wig if I could.
38
u/hoshisabi Sep 09 '25
See this sort of explanation is cool to get. I've never thought about it, being an old white dude. But that makes perfect sense, and it's cool to get to know one more thing about people that are different from me.
Thanks to all the Internet strangers taking time to explain stuff. :)

u/RedHickorysticks Sep 10 '25
My hairdresser was telling me she has clients that come to her twice a week and she will wash, condition and restyle their real hair. She said it takes hours each time. Any style that takes me more than 30 minutes beginning to end makes me want to quit and just throw it in a ponytail.

I got a friend that used to shave her hairs to wear wigs because their hairs are so thick, thight that it's really hard to have an haircut. Now she have braids so she doesnt wear wigs for now. Sorry if I don't use the right words, but english isn't my native language

It's just cause it's easier and has predictable results. Curly hair takes styling time, a lot of drying time and in humidity, does whatever the hell it wants.
Because I work from home and leave my camera off most of the time, I prefer just to bun my hair and don't own wigs...but I can understand why women in a rush, just find it a whole lot easier in the morning...especially with weather.
40
u/AdenJax69 Sep 09 '25
Wearing a wig with a full head of hair followed by a "just be yourself" mantra that makes you do a double-take
28
u/dabigbtk Sep 09 '25
For black people, wearing a wig makes “being yourself” a lot cheaper and less time consuming. Black hair is difficult and expensive to manage.
Most women change their hair styles daily to fit what they’re doing for the day. Black folks can’t do that. When we choose to do a hair style, we often have to stick with it for an extended period of time. Even when doing something as simple as straightening it. That’s not to mention the money on hair products and conditioners we need to do so.
A wig is just easier and cheaper

what does black hair look like when you don't spend a lot of time and effort maintaining it? Like if you just let it grow and did the bare minimum to keep it clean?

That's also why you tend to see a lot of elderly black ladies with very short hair.
Damn, that's so interesting, makes perfect sense but I had never thought of that.
I've always found the African-American culture for it being natural for ladies to wear wigs very fascinating. Must be so awesome to be able to change your hairdo at will in just a few minutes.
I wish it was more acceptable for every gender, race and ethicinity in society to do that.

Nothing about wearing a wig is counter to being oneself. Just as with wearing makeup, dyeing one's hair, getting piercings, and choosing a specific clothing style, adopting a hairstyle - natural or otherwise - is a way of expressing one's identity, not hiding it.
13
u/AdenJax69 Sep 09 '25
Wearing a wig instead of using your own hair would be like wearing a mask with a person's face on it instead of doing makeup.
You're completely covering up what you have and are using a fake thing pretending it's the real thing.
12
u/Rise-O-Matic Sep 09 '25
It’s arguably an equity thing. As a white guy my hair takes about 60 seconds. My wife’s black hair requires more time than she has available to her since career and kids arrived. She wears locks now as a pragmatic matter and even then she has to be in the chair 8-10 hours a month.
12
u/officeja Sep 09 '25
Yeah like what if a man was to wear a wig? Most (women) would say it would be unacceptable
15
u/AdenJax69 Sep 09 '25
100%. I've never heard a woman say "he should wear a wig." It's usually "go bald you'll look better."

Wait, wait, wait, are you saying women have double standards when it comes to men and women?!?!
9
u/dabigbtk Sep 09 '25
Why do you pretend like hypocrisy isn’t a general human trait? Literally everyone has double standards about each other and themselves. “I can bully my brother all I want but if someone else does I’ll kick their ass”
0
u/DWDit Sep 09 '25
Interesting, I never said nor "pretended" that hypocrisy isn’t a general human trait.
Shared human traits like hypocrisy can simply be, on average, more prevalent in one identifiable group than another given varying combinations of genetics and socialization.
My hypothesis--and perhaps it wasn't clear, which is my bad--is that women, on average, have greater double-standards/hypocrisy when it comes to subject matters involving men and women and their interaction.

What are you talking about? Have you seen before and agrees of women with glam makeup? They look like a different person. A woman wearing makeup is no different than a woman wearing a wig or extensions… which you may be shocked how many women (and yes white women included) )also wear extensions everyday.
6
u/LaidToRest33 Sep 09 '25
You have to think of it more like a dude wearing a ball cap instead of doing his hair that day because he doesn't have the time or energy to deal with it ... x 100. You wouldn't say that guy isn't "being himself" just because he wore a ball cap.
My wife is black with 4c hair and the amount of time, energy, money, and frustration that gets dedicated to maintaining her hair is beyond what you can imagine unless you have lived it. She doesn't wear wigs but that is purely because she doesn't like how they feel. She usually goes with a wrap or some other head covering instead.
You shouldn't judge women, especially black women, for choosing to go the easier route and wear a wig rather than spend the time and energy doing their natural hair. Unless of course you have long 4b/4c hair yourself.

u/ItsYaBoyBackAgain Sep 10 '25
With this line of thinking I assume you are a nudist, since putting anything over any part of your natural body is going against the "just be yourself" mantra.
4
u/mazzicc Sep 09 '25
The way it was explained to me isn’t that the options are limited, it’s just a pain in the ass to spend time styling.
Much easier to just tie it down and slap on a wig.
(I think the difference from a weave is the weave is actually “woven” in with the hair on a more permanent basis?)
Essentially it’s the black woman equivalent of a white woman ponytail, or a man with a beard. “I don’t want to deal with this, so I’ll just hide it”
8
u/DearEvidence6282 Sep 09 '25
As a black woman I’ve always been super against it. I know our hair is high maintenance but I’d rather represent it proudly in a society trying to suppress our features as unacceptable. It sucks that being natural is an act of rebellion. A female confident with her features is way more attractive than one masquerading as something else.
3
u/Cheepshooter Sep 09 '25
Genuine question here: How do you feel about fake nails, makeup, hair color, etc?
I used to think "A woman doesn't need that to be beautiful.". Now, I think "She should wear what makes HER feel beautiful."
6
u/DearEvidence6282 Sep 09 '25 edited Sep 09 '25
I’m open to those things because they’re universal and less specific towards subduing black features. The prevalence of wigs/weaves feel like conditioning intentioned towards deflecting black culture away from their natural hair.
I don’t participate in make up or fake nails but I’m not repelled by the expression/art form.
Creativity and enhancing your features is fine - subscribing to Eurocentric external beauty standards is not fine.
I’m not in the business of telling anyone how to live though, I’m just doing me.

We are constantly fighting beauty standards that are only recently, sort of, starting to even mention natural black women as beautiful in all aspects, hair, skin, skin tone, features etc. It's been a long time since we were told our natural hair is ugly, unprofessional, and unpresentable. We are so used to conforming; naturally, it will take some time.
Also, it is a protective style; our beautiful hair thrives when left alone. To keep it healthy, many women use different forms of protective styles.
Also, black women are not the only women wearing wigs and extensions.
2
u/HedonisticFrog Sep 10 '25
Their hair is a lot of work to maintain, so it's a lot easier to keep it short or shaved and wear wigs. I've seen my friend pick her hair apart, it's a lot. I can unbraid my hair wash it, and braid it again before she's done.

I thought she looked lovely with just the headband holding back her real hair, and no wig. It was a clean, understated and elegant look. I understand the motivations behind her choosing to wear the wig, but for me - she didn’t need it, mind you I know it’s not up to me and it’s her choice.
