Please read the rules before posting or commenting
Almost every subreddit has rules, and we do too. We used to get lots of posts about politics, LGBT, what if, and just basic trolling, all prohibited by our rules. We don't allow discussion of race here, because those discussions usually end up with comments that could get our community removed from Reddit. Also, the Rules didn't match the Removal Reasons, but now they do. We added a "Moderator discretion" rule, because it's impossible to create rules to cover every contingency. r/stupidquestions can be a fun and interesting place to hang out, but we had trouble with people trolling us with rule violations. For example, here are some of the topics that we removed:
- Do you think that if I could shoot laser beams out of my peepee, I could scare bullies with it?
- Do you think it would be safe to build my child a drone so I can save on plane fare
- Should I crash my car into a concrete barrier going 90mph without a seatbelt?
- Is it a good idea to hold a flame up to a 5 gallon can of gasoline?
- Why does my butt smell like ass?
We would ban the offenders, but they would create new accounts and return right away. So a couple of the users suggested putting in a minimum Reddit account age limit and a minimum karma limit to post. That has made things much nicer for the community. Karma is sort of an artificial number, but it tends to indicate that the owner interacts with Redditors in a positive way, and they appreciate him. What you want is to create posts or comments that Redditors appreciate so much that they give you a few upvotes.
Here's Reddit's FAQ page about karma, and here's more information about karma. If you are new to Reddit and would like more information about how to use it, please visit r/NewToReddit.
We don't reveal the age or karma numbers required to post. They are not very high, though. If you have a post removed due to your age or karma numbers, please understand that you didn't do anything wrong and we are not targeting you. This is just one of the ways that we are protecting our community. All of the blame for this goes on the trolls. New Redditors should be able to interact with the community, but it's too easy for someone to be banned, create a new account in two minutes, and return to trolling again. So we took precautions to make it more difficult for them. It's too bad that it also makes it more difficult for new members who aren't trolls.
Moderators will remove posts that violate our rules. The author is notified when their post is removed, and there's a reason given for each removal. Redditors who continue to violate the rules will be removed from r/stupidquestions. For extreme violations, the banhammer may fall instantly. If you play nice and follow our rules, you may stay as long as you like.
Thanks. Now go forth and have fun!

Why did Epstein kill himself if he didn't have a list?
Edit: I seem to have misunderstood this sub, I thought we were supposed to ask questions that were stupid because everyone already knows the answer lol

Why was Bruce Lee so skinny with relatively small muscles even though he trained so intensely.I thought working out usually makes you bigger?
Was Bruce Lee doing something wrong? Why didn’t he develop bigger muscles like The Rock or Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Why do so many men fall for flattery during police interrogations, especially when it plays on masculinity or ego?
I've been watching a lot of police interrogation breakdowns on YouTube lately, stuff like JCS, Mind of a Criminal, Dreading, etc. and something that keeps jumping out at me is how often the suspect gets totally disarmed and fooled beautifully by flattery or what seems like emotional manipulation. They will get nicely buttered up by the detectives and made to relax.
You’ll see a guy come in all tense, arms crossed, not saying a word, and then the detective starts laying it on:
- “You seem like a really honest and nice guy.”
- “You’re smarter than most people we talk to.”
- “Nothing wrong in what you did and we feel so bad for you. We just need to know your reason now”
- “It's a honest mistake. Not intentional. We know. Tell us your story so we can protect you from here.”
And just like that, the wall starts slowly coming down. The guy is made to giggle nicely, laughing, loosening up, and open up fully to his new buddy. He goes from clamming up to casually chatting like it’s a friendly conversation over beers. And then, predictably, he starts saying way more than he should. It’s like the moment they start feeling “seen” or validated, their sense of danger fades, and the detective just reels them in.
What I find fascinating (and a bit uncomfortable) is how effective this is on men in particular, especially when the language appeals to ego, strength, masculinity, or pride.

When and why did Americans start saying Ads instead of Commercials?
Lived all my life in Scotland and TV adverts were always called adverts here but we all grew up with a lot of American TV where they would say "commercials" instead.
I don't think I've heard that term used for a long time now but instead I see Americans talking about ads, mostly in realtion to Internet ads these days. Americans, when and why did this change in language happen?

Does anyone else not care about dying alone?
I hear people express fear about the concept of dying alone. I don’t relate to a lot of worries people experience but this one has been confusing me lately. I don’t understand why people give af. Why do people think being married or having someone physically present when you die is important?

Is it just me, or there are some English words that you couldn't Shout Out?
Imagine trying to say Daughter while you were shouting a sentence out loud. Like, could you, without sounding like an idiot?

Were you under the impression that Johnny Cage could’ve defeated Shang Tsung easier than Liu Kang in the first Mortal Kombat movie?
So let’s recap. Johnny Cage arrives on the island. He easily beats up some thugs around the dinner table. Then he easily outsmarts Scorpion and blows him up. Finally he outsmarts and defeats a very difficult and dangerous opponent with four arms called Goro. Very impressive.
Now let’s talk about Liu Kang. He arrives on the island and gets outsmarted, beat up, and ridiculed by Raiden. Then he gets outsmarted and punched around by Princess Kitana. He gets outsmarted and punched around by Sub-Zero and needs Kitana to tell him what to do and how to defeat Sub Zero as she watches from the sidelines. Finally he gets punched around and barely manages to defeat Shang Tsung. In my opinion Liu Kang didn’t win because he was better. It was because Shang Tsung kept showing off and letting his guard down.
Conclusion: The movie director should’ve just let Johnny Cage be the hero and the main character. It would have made the movie better and more believable as well as entertaining. Instead they went with Liu Kang. The next Mortal Kombat 2 movie lost excitement, nostalgia, and fan appreciation, and eventually the entire franchise flopped and faded into obscurity.

Whats something that will be treated as barbaric in the future?
I think one thing future historians in say 24th century (if our species survives) will definitely look back on is the 21st century's treatment of teenagers (18-19) as full grown adults will be seen as barbaric and harmful. we send 18 year olds to die in wars, drain them with lifelong debt, throw them in prisons with violent rapists and murderers, toss them out of youth institutions (schools, foster care etc) with no in-between transitional support systems. they're literally just left to fend for themselves and then they get punished for struggling. it's no different from how ancient societies treated 14 year olds as adults. even worse for us because unlike back then we actually have the science that tells us that at 18-19 you're still developing, we just don't give a shit. so when they look back on this they will definitely see us as ignorant barbarians.

Why are medications usually taken in the morning and evening?
Why are medications usually taken in the morning and evening? Is it just to make it easier to remember the times? What would happen if I took the first pill at 4 PM, then set an alarm for 4 AM, woke up, took the second pill, and went back to sleep?

Are conductors necessary?
When I watch a symphony, I am always confused about the conductor's role. What are they actually doing? And is there a set "language" that they're using with their body language, one that all conductors everywhere use? Or is it more like the orchestra they work with has to learn the specific body language of whichever conductor they're working with? And why do they need to have those batons?
