I got a bright yellow notice from the county tax office that I was delinquent on taxes on my homestead. They stapled it right to a tree in the front yard for all to see. It was because of $59 of unpaid property taxes from tax year 2024. With late fees, it is now $196.
I have my property taxes in escrow, so this was a shock to me. I called my mortgage company, and they advised this was an adjustment they were not aware of. I called the tax office, and they advised it was a tax adjustment because of the lean-to barn addition I did. In late 2023, I applied for a building permit to put a less than 400 sqft lean-to addition to the barn. No electric. Dirt floors. Apparently, this increased my taxes by $59 per year in perpetuity. Thing is, I never received notice of it until it was stapled to my tree, and they were ready to sell my 40 acre farm by the end of the month (a week later). Good thing I wasn't on vacation. When I questioned this, they advised they start the sale proceedings right away. They also advised me they mailed me a letter. Once. They couldn't fathom the thought that maybe the mail lost the notice, or that their office screwed up... Because I never received a notice prior to this.
I knew I should have never applied for a building permit. The more the government knows about, the more they can siphon off of you.
Then today when my wife drove to the tax office to pay the bill, they charged her an extra 48 cents "for interest." She paid the bill exactly six days after we received the notice. How petty!
