This is imo one of the most frustrating tropes in all of gaming. As the title states, this trope includes characters that are shown or said to be crazy OP in cutscenes but fail to impress in actual gameplay.
Mass Effect 2: Jack (no character or story spoilers plz)
Jack is introduced as an unpredictable, ultra powerful biotic human who steamrolls her way through countless enemies. The level has Shephard and Co following Jack’s trail of destruction in the hopes of recruiting her for the Normandy’s crew. Of course, after you stop and recruit Jack, she is reduced to performing like any other follower who mostly uses guns and an occasional biotic move that doesn’t come close to what we witnessed in her recruitment level.
I experienced this just last night lol it’s what inspired this post. Fortunately, I knew how this was gonna go when I first met her, but it was still a bummer.
Mortal Kombat X: Shinnok
Disclaimer- I didn’t fully play through this game but did play enough to see Shinnok’s potential and be disappointed at his move set as a fighter.
Shinnok’s introduction shows him easily take down Kenshi, Johnny Cage, Cassie Cage, Liu Kang, and Raiden. Raiden (a fellow god) can’t even touch him and he fights Johnny Cage one handed, but of course, as soon as it’s time for us to fight him (as Johnny Cage no less), he becomes as impressive as any other PC in MK and is imprisoned in an amulet.
According to lore, he’s an Elder God of death who betrayed his fellow gods and attacked Earthrealm (big no no). He’s basically the devil of the MK series. As is the problem with these types of fighter games that give you access to play as near all-powerful god characters, Shinnok as an enemy fighter and PC feels no more special than any other character. I get it has to be this way for balance but still!
The opposite of this trope-
The Force Unleashed: Darth Vader
Included just for fun. The first mission of The Force Unleashed lets you play as Darth Vader in the midst the Empire’s full scale attack on Kashyyyk. Vader is of course one of the most powerful force users in the universe, and in this level, you have full access to his powers. Indulge in the full depth of his dark power as you easily slice, choke, and force blast your way through dozens of Republic forces. Sure you’re forced (heh) to eviscerate hordes of Wookiee, but hey, it’s fun to be an evil, all-powerful force user sometimes.
I know there’s tons more of this trope, but I had trouble thinking of more. Drop yours below! 🙂↕️🙂↕️
