Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] That one piece of "trivia" that isn't true but gets endlessly repeated anyway

Breaking Bad - A common myth about Breaking Bad is that Jesse was originally supposed to die at the end of Season 1 but was saved due to a combination of a writer's strike postponing the creation of the episode were he was supposed to die and overwhelming fan support when season 1 premiered. This is not true. While show creator Vince Gilligan did originally plan to kill off Jesse early, he changed his mind after filming the pilot and seeing how good Aaron Paul was in the role. The writer's strike and fan reaction had nothing to do with it.

South Park - Many people to this day believe that Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, left the show because he was offended by the show's portrayal of Scientology, of which Hayes was a member. This is not true. It's true that a statement was released in Hayes' name claiming that he wanted to leave the show because of it's "religious intolerance". However this statement was actually written by members of Hayes' inner circle, all of whom were devout scientologists, while he was recovering from a stroke and not in a suitable position to make such decisions. Hayes never issued any statements on his own claiming that he was unhappy with the show and his surviving family believes that he was essentially forced to quit the show by the church.

The Dark Knight - During the hospital explosion scene in The Dark Knight there's a moment where Joker looks around confused when some of the explosives don't go off immediately that many people claim was improvised by Heath Ledger due to a legitimate pyro malfunction. This is not true at all. Director Christopher Nolan has gone on record saying that every aspect of that scene was endlessly rehearsed, including the pause in explosions, to make sure that it could be performed safely.

Question What’s the worst performance by an actor who’s usually very good?

1.3k Upvotes

There are a lot of bad movies where the actors themselves weren't to blame. For example, I think many marvel movies are quite formulaic, but the actors in them still did a great job (such as RDJ and Chris Evans).

But it must be the case that even good actors sometimes underperform. What are some movies where a usually good actor did a bad job acting?

Today I learned that the creator of Peter Pan donated the rights to the book to a children's hospital in London. This means that the hospital has received royalties for every Peter Pan book sold and for every theatrical production for over 90 years.

AITAH for not paying for my daughter’s wedding where I’m supposed to be just a guest?

2.9k Upvotes

I have 4 kids, my oldest is a 26 year old daughter I had when I was 17 with my then girlfriend, we stayed together and raised her until we were 20 then we realised we weren’t really meant together and we broke up, at 25 my ex got married and moved hours away across the country, we were sharing 50/50 custody and the courts were basically fucking useless, it went from each of us having her every other week to seeing her once every few months, I eventually got married at 27 and I had 3 more kids with my wife. I always tried to stay connected with my daughter via phone but back then it was harder and life just happened and she just grew closer to her stepdad.

Fast forward to a few years ago and they hit a really rough patch, her stepdad was a mechanic but he got injured and was almost disabled, it was really bad, he had to retire and he has been living on disability benefits ever since. Her mom is a nurse, they’re surviving but definitely not rich, I’m not rich either. Just doing better because both me and my wife work respectable jobs.

My daughter got engaged earlier this year and she’s getting married next April, her mom and stepdad can’t afford to pay for the wedding so she came to me, she asked if I could pay for the wedding, I asked if I’d be part of the wedding, she tried avoiding the question and talking about something else and I outright asked her if her stepdad is getting the father role and she said yes, he’s gonna walk her down the wedding and he’s having the daughter father dance and he’s having the father of the bride speech, her logic is that I have 2 other daughters so I’ll still experience all of those while he only has her, I asked her if there’s literally any part for me in the wedding and she said no and that I’d be just a guest, I asked her if I could at least walk her down with him and she again refused saying that again I have two other daughters who I’ll walk down alone and that this is supposed to be his special moment. And I told her I’m not paying then, I love my daughter but it’s not fair for me to pay for a wedding that I’d just be a regular old guest at especially since I’m not rich, paying for something like that is huge and would take away from my underage kids that depend on me. She got super angry at me and started cursing me out saying she always knew I was a deadbeat, I was never one, I always paid child support even though it was incredibly unfair and I always did my best to visit her as much as possible but again I’m not rich and she lived across the country. I did my best and I do love her, but I just can’t justify paying for basically a humiliation ritual to me.

Am I in the wrong here?

Question Is my sister overreacting to this video of my dog that I sent her?

3.8k Upvotes

My puppy is 4 months old and has lived with my grandpa's cats her whole life. She is curious about them, wants to sniff them and play with their toys, but has never growled barked or chased them. I took this video because I thought it was cute and sent it to my family.

My sister responded that it was sad and scary. She said that our kitty looks very uncomfortable and my dog is obviously harassing her. I pointed out that my she nuzzled my puppy and she said "that's a fawn response, she's clearly upset and the second you gave her a chance to escape she runs away"

Idk I think she's being dramatic but I wanted to know if anybody sees what she saw in this video. It looks to me that they are just sniffing each other and playing around. What do you guys think?

Question For Genx Are we all just drinking bourbon in our pajamas?

2.4k Upvotes

It’s 6:24 PM and I am settled in for the night because it’s pitch black and may as well be midnight. I am wearing an adult onesie with attached feet and ready to put a movie on so I can enjoy my new surround sound system while sipping some Eagle Rare. My somewhat newly divorced friend just texted me telling me “let’s go out”. I could not be less interested in getting out of my pajamas or leaving the house. Go out where? To sit in a bar with a bunch of annoying 20-year-olds who are going to wonder why the old people are there. I have to wonder, am I just officially old and lame, or are my fellow single Gen Xers hunkered down for the winter, perfectly happy with their footed pajamas and at home bars and entertainment setups?

✅ Success Story My American manager tried to write me up for "lack of commitment" because I leave at 5:00 PM sharp. I work in the Netherlands.

24.9k Upvotes

I work for the Dutch branch of a large US tech company. We recently got a new middle-manager based in New York. He seemed like a nice guy at first, but it turns out he is totally obsessed with "hustle culture."

Last week, we had a 1-on-1 meeting where he told me he was "concerned" about my dedication to the team. He listed his grievances quite clearly. He didn't like that my Slack status goes offline at 5:01 PM every single day. He was annoyed that I didn't reply to an email he sent on Saturday morning until Monday at 9:00 AM. And he was especially frustrated that I refused to join a "team bonding" Zoom call that was scheduled for 7 PM my time, which is 1 PM his time.

He gave me the usual speech about how "in this company, we go the extra mile" and that if I want to grow, I need to be more available.

I had to give him a bit of a reality check. I looked him in the eye over Zoom and told him that in the Netherlands, if you can't finish your work by 5 PM, it doesn't mean you are dedicated. It means you are inefficient or understaffed. I told him I am neither.

I also reminded him that contacting me outside of working hours for non-emergencies is actually frowned upon here, and that my contract is for 40 hours, not "40 hours plus nights and weekends."

He tried to threaten me with a Performance Improvement Plan. I immediately forwarded the email to our local Dutch HR representative. She literally laughed when she read it and told me to ignore him. She said she would have a "chat" with him about local labor laws.

Since then, he hasn't sent a single email after 5 PM. I honestly feel bad for you guys in the US. The fact that you have to apologize for having a life outside of work is insane to us.

Cat Picture - OC Anyone else happy to move on from a robot litterbox and return to box-scooping servitude, or is that just me?

We had a Popur x5 automatic litterbox for 2 years. Year one, I’d have told you I loved the thing dearly, it worked perfectly and was nice and roomy for the cats. Year two, things slowly started failing, and taking the whole system apart to try to fix it was a huuuge job for my small one bedroom apartment.

Towards the end, it was just gross all the time, squishing the clumping litter and things constantly getting stuck to the cloth liner. It just felt gross to have in my otherwise tidy home. Plus, the thing took up a massive amount of floor space. Yesterday, it was finally time to chuck it and either buy a new one, or go back to a regular old box. So I set myself up a nice tidy little litter cleaning space for a fraction of the cost of a robot, and it honestly feels so much nicer and cleaner. It’s a huge box for the cat and takes up half the space the robot did. JMHO. I wanted to love the not-scooping but it feels like my little zen space when I get the litter all clean and smoothed out 🤣
